Thank you so so much for all these replies! It sounds like the double is almost unanimously the way to go! Good to know you can do a single pump with the double if needed. I will order one through my insurance today!

I'm a stay at home mom and EBF still at 10 months. I pump with the double. We've always given him a pumped bottle before bed so I pump daily. The double has been soooo good. I cannot imagine a single. Everyone I know who bought a single eventually bought a double as well.

@lulu22: I was in the same situation and am glad I got the double (both were no extra cost to me). I didn't pump that often but when I did, I wanted it done as quickly as possible. And yes you can close off one size if needed, like if baby fell asleep after only one side or something.

The only downsides are 1) it takes some time to put together and get set up- not a lot by any means, but since you will probably be pumping infrequently, it takes a few minutes. I imagine a Swing is quicker to set up. 2) it's much bigger and heavier than a single, so if you want to bring it for travel it's a pain.

That said I'm still glad I got the double no also recommend a good hands free bra, even though you won't be using it often. Makes a huge difference!

I'll also be the voice of dissent and say that not only did I have a single, but it was a manual single at that! Cue the horror! :silly: I'm a SAHM and only ever pumped to have a small stash and relieve engorgement when I had a clogged duct. I successfully BF my first LO until 13 months and am still going strong with DD2 at nearly 12 months.

Neither of my girls ever took to a bottle really, and certainly not when I was around, so I just kept a small stash for when we went out for an evening and left grandma in charge. For the maybe 25 times in my life I have pumped, anything more than my single manual would have been a total waste.

You can close the tubing off on the Medela double to make it a single, so do the double.

Plus pumping sucks so so so bad, I vote to get the nicest pump you can to ease as much of the annoyance as possible:) I despise pumping!

Always a double - I've known a few moms who got the single and regretted it when their milk supply wasn't what they hoped it would be, or their LO had feeding issues and they needed to pump often.

If you don't have to pay for it definitely a double pump (and yes they can be used as a single). Maybe get a manual for when you just want to quickly relief some engorement.

Eh, I'll be the voice of dissent..I stayed home for 6.5mo and had a single pump and it was totally fine!! Also super cheap. I built up a stash of about 100oz by the time he was 4 months. I never really saw a need for a double. But it's true I would have maybe gotten there twice as fast with a double...I just didn't really need to!

Like @lemondrop: said....ain't nobody got time to have to do it twice! I had lunch with another new mom and she has a single pump. She's just now realizing it will take her ages to nurse and pump on each side!

Double, ALWAYS double! Ain't nobody got time to pump two times in one session. Get the misery of pumping over that much faster (it isn't horrible by any means, but it's not super fun either).

@lulu22: Double. Increased prolactin = more milk. Plus, as a sahm, you'll have less time (chasing a baby around).

Definitely get a double. A double pump can be used as a single, but a single obviously can never be used as a double.

PISA for sure! You can use it as a single pump whenever you need, but honestly you won't want to waste the time only pumping one or individually pumping each. I think you'll primarily use the double. And since it's free, I'd definitely get the one with more sale value at the end (if you want to get rid of it). I had a PISA and it was great.

Hi all! I am due with my first baby in April and I'm in the process or working out if I should get and single or double electric pump. I will be a SAHM and plan to primarily nurse but also do a little pumping so that DH can do some feedings (probably not more than 1 or 2 a day, and probably not every day). My question is, for this volume, am I better off getting a single or double pump? I am looking at either the Medela Swing or the Medela Pump In Style Advanced. Cost is not a factor as my insurance covers both, so I am just wondering which one would be more convenient for my situation. Can double pumps be used as single pumps if needed?
