We tried the hold the finger over the straw with liquid in it but what worked best was the bait and switch. I got her to suck on a pouch and then would slip the straw in and the pouch out while she was sucking. Only took a day or two before she got it. A Contigo straw water bottle was the winner. I wish I had started there to begin with. For the next kid, I tossed all the sippy cups except the 360 cup (mostly because I think it's cool??). Around 11 months we tried a straw cup (so we wouldn't have to tip it for her) and she got it right away. Think I read the instructions on here. I used a finger to hold the liquid in and then lifted it up to his mouth and let it flow in when he started mouthing it. Then I kept my finger on it and he would suck it out. Eventually he got the hang of it when the straw was the right way. Sippy were hit or miss since he didn't get tipping the cup. </p> <p>Other option is there are certain sippys that are more like bottles to try! Cups of milk/water are not replacements for bottles, solids are. So if he's eating full meals, you can stop bottles at 1. You just have to make sure he drinks enough (or eats high water content foods) so that he doesn't get dehydrated.</p> <p>I know most people here are anti-juice, but the best way we taught DS how to drink out of straw was with a juice box. A lot of straw cups had too much resistance for him, and we could squeeze the box a little and he understood there was juice in there. And the juice was more tempting for him to try to drink than milk or water. Eventually we got him on straw cups and sippies - the take n toss ones are great for new learners.
