@alphagam84: I think it took about a month? Since it releases with pressure we pushed down right by his mouth to help him get that water was supposed to come out. We also took the plastic top piece out at one point so it was just like a slow open cup. It's worth having if you can just let her take time learning to use it.

I forgot to mention that was use a shot glass for DD to drink out of and it works great! We hold it to her lips of course but the little size is great for her mouth. I'd say she maybe drinks 1/2 ounce from it at a time 1-3 times a day? I don't think you have to worry about yours getting too much. We just do it at mealtimes when I think she'd like some water. And half of it drips down her front anyways :)

@brownepiano: We bought a 360 degree cup for my daughter (8 months) and she could not figure it out and you could tell she was frustrated by the lack of water. I tried drinking out of it and thought it was hard! How long did it take yours to figure out? I've thought about returning the ones I bought....

We skipped sippy cup and introduced straw cup with a little water at some point (totally don't remember when). After she turned 1 we started giving cow's milk in a straw cup too and stopped bottles. Now at 19 months she's mostly using open cups and straw cups.

We started open cups really early, just using a really small cup (like a shot glass). He learned that fast. We also taught him how to use a straw and bought a 360 cup around 8 months. The 360 cup took him a little while to figure out, but when he did it was my favorite for a while.

We have kept it very simple. Take N Toss sippy cups with water starting at 6 months. Started putting milk in them at 12 months. Stopped bottles right at 12 months. She is now 16 months and drinks out of the same sippies. She is learning to drink water out of open cup. She can use a straw but I hate the extra cleaning that straw cups require. I don't have to feel annoyed if I lose a Take N Toss cup. Plus it's what her daycare uses.

We started with the take and toss sip pies for both kids. It's what the daycare uses. Our younger started drinking formula and water in a sippy at about 10 months. She was bottle free at one. At nearly 20 months she still uses a sippy but also has the 360 cups, a spouted cantigo and is starting to get straw cups. She's interested in open cups but generally makes a mess with them.

LO never took a bottle and we started on water at 4 months (along with solids). He used avent sippy cups until 6 months then we introduced the munchkin 360 trainer and bye bye sippies. No issues at all, he drinks a ton of water and still nurses a lot, and loves his 360 as well as any open cup we share with him. (He's now 9 mo)

We skipped sippy and straight to straw cup at 6 mo. For water only, just a couple oz limit per day until older. When LO started daycare at 11 mo she wouldn't take her EBM from a bottle so straw cup for everything it was! We introduced the 360 miracle cup at some point, maybe 14 mo? Now she's almost 22 mo and does open cups or the 360 or straws.

@DesertDreams88: I always stayed away from giving water because of water intoxication in babies and also, I already had an issue with a family member giving my son vitamin C mixed in water when he was 4 months old... where I had to call poison control. They weren't very worried about the vitamin C but were worried about the water.

Because of that I always thought the formula that we give them is enough hydration. But at their 9 month appt, the pediatrician asked if we gave the babies a sippy cup yet. Since I missed the memo on when to start sippy cups, she said 9 months is a good time to start giving them water in a sippy cup.

The babies are 10 months and we gave them sippy cups and they seem to understand how they work. A month ago, they weren't quite understanding it, but now they do.

My LO had a ton of trouble with straw cups so I did end up buying every soppy cup under the sun. Most were too hard to suck on for him. The best were the Take and Toss sippys. Now our fave straw cups are the thermos metal ones. (And I have literally bought almost every cup invented...)

@gingerbebe: good point about holding his own bottles! LO has done this about 6-8 times but would rather have us hold them :) So that is a good thing to think about.

@gingerbebe: @hilsy85: @sooz: @Mrs. Pickle: @OldpuebloJenn: @alphagam84: oh good, so it IS possible to bypass the sippy cup?! I read that that was the recommendation, but kinda didn't believe it could be done, for practicalities' sake. Thought it was like those "official guidelines" that people don't really follow in real life. But I'm a rule follower, so I'd like the bypass the sippy cup if possible!

@DesertDreams88: also that kelly mom website is mostly about exclusively breastfed babies--meaning babies who are only on breastmilk. Once they start solids, they do need additional water, IME. I would really not worry about overhydration unless you find that your son LOVES water and is downing like 8oz at a time.

@alphagam84: @hilsy85: My concerns about water are based on the info on these websites:

My ILs are taking care of him during the day while I'm at work and I feel like they'd give him too much water. Maybe I could pre-measure 2-3oz and put it in the fridge, and tell them that's the max amount...?

My son never held His own bottles so he never understood tipping his head back with sippy cups so we just went to straw cups. We taught using the the Take n Go kind because you can squeeze water up the straw and help them sip. The best straw cups for us were Tommee Tippee - first the small one with handles and then the tall ones. My son hated any straw cups that you had to suck really hard on so the TT ones worked for him. All the other leak proof ones were too hard to suck. For home our favorite is the Zoomi cup but it has no lid so it doesn't travel.

No reason to do a sippy cup. I'd go right to a straw cup. And why would you limit water until 9 months? If he is eating solids, he needs water so he won't get constipated.

We didn't start using an open cup until closer to 18 months/2 years. Didn't hamper his development at all :) I wouldn't worry about that so much. I also wouldn't worry about cutting all bottles out at 12 months exactly--see how he does and then re-evaluate. It's mostly an issue if the baby sleeps with a bottle, because then it can affect the palette. If he's just eating from one a few times a day and using a straw cup or open cup the rest of the time I don't think it will affect oral development much (but not an expert of course).

We completely bypassed the sippy and went straight to a straw cup. We started both our boys on a straw cup at six months with a little bit of water. We didn't force it, just started placing a straw cup for them to try out at their meals and they would drink less than 1 oz.

I started giving my babe water at 6 months. She loves it. I have given her water from an open cup, straw in a cup, and she has a green sprouts sippy cup that comes with a straw for later. I had to help her use the cup for a month or so because she couldn't figure out tipping it up, but she has now and I pretty much always have it available to her. Not sure when I'll give her a little open cup to use herself-they're messy, but I know it's good to do. She's 9 months now and I have no plans to right now.

To keep from wasting breastmilk, we only used water in a sippy cup. I just offered it when he was getting solids, and he never drank very much of it. Once he got the hang of it, then he always had a sippy of water availble to him. Straw cups were never a big thing for us. All the ones that didn't leak were so hard to suck from and all the others leaked. We've actually never used a sippy cup for milk, I always thought it would be too hard to clean. After 1, he only got milk at meal times and we used an open cup. He needed help with it obviously, but was drinking from an open cup on his own well before he was two.

We didn't transition to an open cup until almost 3. He drank mostly out of straw cups or water bottles before that.

We transitioned completely away from bottles at 16 months (pediatrician said as long as it was before 18 months we were fine). We used a soft spout sippy cup that was similar to a bottle for a month or two before moving to the Munchkin sippy and straw cups.

Once we transitioned from formula after 12 months he only got milk or water. Milk kind of sucked in any straw cup because it leaks if it gets warm.

To be honest, we would only buy one cup at a time to see what he liked. We did go through a few different ones until we settled on Munchkin. But I don't think we ever paid that much for one cup.

We're skipping a sippy cup and just doing straws/drinking straight from a glass with my daughter. We've actually just been holding a glass of water to her lips and she loves to drink it! Trying to get her to use a straw cup but she's having a hard time getting the concept of sucking to get the water. She got it on Saturday morning but then forgot again. I'm sure she'll figure it out this week. I don't think there is any reason to restrict water until 9 months of age. Our pediatrician said to start giving her water at her 6 month appt. She won't get any juice for a long time. Don't over think this, just go with what feels right to you.

So maybe I'm overthinking this due to LO's original bottle pickiness, but I somehow want to make it through the bottle-to-cup process without buying every cup under the sun :) or spilling a bunch of breastmilk! LO drinks from Lasinoh Momma bottles. I bought the Nuk sippy cup bc it seems similar to his bottles & Spoutless Munchkin 360 Cup bc I'm intrigued by the design. I have a Thermos FOOGO cup saved in my Amazon list. DH & I drink almost exclusively from Camelbak water bottles, not open cups.

I've done some reading &feel a bit confused by the different guidelines. Tell me if I have this right....

TIMING / TYPE
- 6 months: Introduce sippy cup
- 9 months or earlier if possible: Introduce straw cup & open cups
- 12 months: End bottles, switch to straw cups and open cups

WHAT GOES IN IT?
- Bottles are for breastmilk & formula.
- Very little water until 9 months
- Preferably no juice but again, at least wait until 9 months
- Sippy cups & straw cups are for water and juice.

What am I missing? Is my timeline off? I've also read about hard spouts vs soft spouts vs no spouts at all, but I don't really care too much about that issue.
