We went cold turkey, we tried gradual but when she caught on she would refuse until we gave her the bottle. It took us 2 days and she switched with no issue. We started with a soft top sippy cup, and then moved to the harder topped insulated Playtex ones (for milk) and now we do the Take n Toss.

She uses straws for water & juice only.

I think cold turkey is best. I asked my ped what the minimum acceptable oz was and she said 6. Take n toss cups worked best for is because the flow is much faster than most sippys.

@OpinionsLikeKittens: I don't really have many suggestions then other than cold turkey. That's how we did it. We had to get her off bottles for daycare so, we just cut them out.

Another vote for straw cups or open cups. We had one sippy that DS never figured out how to use, so he drank milk out of straw cups and was completely using open cups by about 14 months.

My DD is 6 months and we've just introduced the open cup to her for water. She loves drinking out of it, even if there is a lot of spilling. I'm not even going to bother with sippies for her.

Something has always worked for us for this kind of thing is buying one that DS would like (color or design) and them getting REALLY excited about what a big boy he is using it.

J was this way, we never did sippy just straw. I had to water her milk down just a tad and she suddenly started taking it. My pedi told me to just keep offering and make sure she was drinking enough water. Now at almost 14mos she can drink her milk without it being watered down.

We went cold turkey. She doesn't drink anywhere near the same amount of milk, but they're not supposed to drink as much as they get older.

@mediagirl: we drinks water from a straw cup and from some sippy cups but won't drink milk from anything but a bottle. I would be happy to do milk in a straw cup, but he won't go for it. I bought some "transition" sippies that look more like bottles to see if that would be better for him, but no luck. We are still only doing sips of water in open cups, b/c they mainly just wind up on the floor.

We did it cold turkey. She struggled for a couple weeks with getting this was how she was getting her liquids. We also switched to a sippy from a straw cup and she did much much better.

Why not just don't use sippies? We have never used a sippy cup with M, only straw and open cups. I'm not sure if I understood this but he will drink water from a cup but not milk? Does that go for a sippy or a straw cup?

We transitioned to straw cups because that's what he's used to with water, but the daycare does sippy cups and he can apparently go back and forth (now).

We just did cold turkey. I cut out one bottle/nursing session each week and gave him a cup instead. The first 2-3 weeks, he really didn't drink much, but now he drinks 12-16 oz each day. It just takes time for them to adjust.

Good luck!

Heeeeeeeelp. What worked for you when transitioning your LO off of bottles. We just had an epic meltdown trying to give my one year old milk in a sippy. He will take water from a straw cup during meals, but won't take milk from any sippy we have tried.

I kind of want to go cold turkey on him and just have a battle of wills, but I'm too much of a wuss and worry about him dehydrating.

This is worse than changing him from the co-sleeper to the crib in terms of resistance. I'm so sad for him, he is really upset!
