We don't personally have this issue, but I've heard that if you stick with just one kind of cup they tend to get it a little bit easier. Might just take lots of practice. I started offering LO a straw cup at 5.5 months every day and by about 6.5 months she got it.

@Mrs. Lion: We are used to the BLW mess too - we lost our dog about a month ago and have been missing him a little extra because he made cleanup a bit easier. We seriously debated giving them no valve/milk in the bathtub until they get it...

@Mamasig: Thanks! I have been trying to figure out what I could put in them to be more tempting - I haven't ever given juice but thought about it last night. Smoothie sounds better to me. I do think that incentive helps and I feel pretty bad if the only incentive I can use is for them to be hungry!

@twobee: it is a mess :) but we are doing blw so a mess is standard haha :) he only gets cups in the high chair, so that cuts down a bit. :)

@Mrs. Lion: We have! No problems at all - they feed themselves sitting up whether they are in the highchair or on the floor. I might have to try milk/formula with a no valve sippy - sounds like a mess! I wish the soft spout cups we are sticking with had a removable valve, but no dice... poor kids are going to be so mixed up between hard and soft spouts.

@rattles: That's a good idea with the straws! They didn't eat purees very frequently but I know the nanny did teach them how to suck on the pouches. Truthfully they might have been mostly chewing on those too, but it can't hurt to give it a try. Thanks!

DS got better at sucking on the straw once we gave him a bit of fruit smoothie with a straw. He knew it tasted good so he had incentive to try sucking. Plus it was thicker so he had to really try. It clicked with milk and water after that.

Has your LO gotten the hang of pouches of food? I ask because when I was first giving DD a sippy cup, she couldn't get the hang of it at all. I switched to a straw cup and used my hand to cover the rest of the straw, leaving just a little nub at the top like there are on pouches. I showed her sucking on the pouch and then sucking on the little straw nub, and it was as though something clicked. She took a big ol' gulp and has been fine with them since.

Have you tried giving them their bottles in the high chair instead of a sippy? LL refused to even attempt to use a cup, and we started just giving him his bottle so he could get used to feeding himself. The next day I gave him one of the take and toss cups (the milk just flows out...theres no valve) and he drank 3 ounces out of it. He gets frustrated after a little while because the milk comes out really fast...but he is at least trying now!

Good luck!

@Mrs Green Grass: How old is your son? I am wondering if we should just go cold turkey after their birthday and figure they will have no choice but to learn. I am so over washing 8 bottles a day - it is TIME for a cup!

I too bought a ton of different types. My lo wouldn't suck (he's just starting to) so I wanted to stick to sippys. Most were too fast for him, but the Take n Toss cups are much better. Since it's a hard spout, he chews (a little) less. We are on Day 3 of cold turkey!

Our girls turn one next week and I am starting to get nervous about bottle weaning. I'd like to go cold turkey - they are generally low maintenance about most things and I think they will be fine switching... as soon as they can actually learn how to drink from a sippy or straw cup!

We have tried so many different sippys and straw cups and they just can't seem to get the hang of any of them. Which is surprising, because they are great at feeding themselves their bottles - they can even do it one-handed, standing up. The most promising cups have been the silicone spout ones, so for the last week or two we have only offered those in the hopes that consistency is key... but so far, no success.

We have been offering water in sippys/straw cups consistently since 7 or 8 months, but anything they have gotten out of the cups is incidental to their chewing on the spouts or straws. We've tried with valves, without valves - they are more interested in playing with/chewing on the cups and the no-valve option has resulted more than once in an empty cup with little or nothing going down the hatch. They can drink out of an open cup but not without assistance, which makes that option a non-starter for two at the same time.

We gave them formula in sippys last night instead of a bottle after dinner/before bed, but they are usually not all that hungry after eating dinner so it went mostly untouched. This morning we offered their wake-up bottle (the one they usually are hungriest for) as a sippy instead, and it was NOT popular, although I did see some progress in getting formula into their mouths at least. Still, they only got about an ounce down in nearly an hour. Our nanny is planning to offer only sippys all day today, so we will see how it goes... but I don't want to have the girls get no liquids all day!

Any advice for the babies that just chew on the sippy or straw? They have the tilt down, but they won't suck!
