@Sammyfab: yes I totally agree it's up to each family! Babies are better off in happy households, IMO, whatever that may mean for the parents and sleep training. There are lots of factors that go into that decision. I know I am so lucky with my situation so
I'm definitely not judging.

@googly-eyes: @Kemma: Ahhhh yes...I totally agree that sleep training is often pushed upon parents and babies at too young of an age by paediatricians (especially in the US) and other parents. They are more often than not referring to nightweaning. I also agree that families should do whatever works best for them for as long as it continues to work. They know their child the best!

@Sammyfab: I totally get your interpretation on sleep training, I guess my thought process was that so many people (both on HB and in real life) talk about "sleep training" at around the four-six month mark, it just makes me wonder whether babies just aren't developmentally ready at that point (particularly those that require some heavy duty CIO). Who knows whether their sleep would've worked itself out anyway without sleep training?

I know for me personally, I found erratic sleep patterns much easier to deal with when I stopped trying to battle with them and reminded myself that LO isn't doing it on purpose! Reframing the sleep situation is a big help for me.

@Sammyfab: I get the whole falling asleep independently thing but I just at the same time feel like when LO needs extra help maybe its because she's not ready to do it herself yet and she will get there as she gets older. But that said she is a pretty good sleeper and I stay at home so I see why others do it!

I may be wrong but perhaps everyone's perception of what sleep training is may be off? Sleep training =/= night weaning, but rather it's teaching your baby how to fall asleep independently (and hopefully stay asleep). It's teaching healthy, independent sleep habits because waking up every 30-60 minutes throughout the night isn't normal past the newborn stage or healthy for baby or parent. Learning how to sleep longer, continuous stretches is as much a skill as breastfeeding, self-feeding, potty training, etc. How your LO achieves that skill though is up to the parent :).

If you're talking about the "breast is best" statements by formula companies, I think it's due to WHO code and being sort of pc.

I wonder a lot about the sleep training thing too, but I get why people do it. I think it's more a matter of modern lifestyles than it is the parents wanting simple convenience.

What I wonder about is why so much pressure to be the perfect mom and to do it all alone?

I agree with your sleep training "musing". I think that we are forced to fit ourselves and our children into society's patterns. For example, studies show that teenagers need to sleep longer in the mornings but we have to force them to get up to go to school. I wonder if babies should be able to eat and sleep on demand but we have to find ways to train them to fit into our schedule because we have to go to work etc? I read an article a few weeks back about babies in parts of Africa who are breastfed on demand and are strapped to their mothers day and night, while they work, look after their families -apparently they are much happier and hardly cry. But we couldn't do that - imagine rocking up at work with your baby strapped to you, with a boob in its mouth! So instead we are forced to "train" our babies to fit around us and our commitments. It makes me sad.... but needs must.

There are my musings!

So I was feeling a little philosophical this evening and thought I'd throw a couple random musings out on to the interwebs. No judgement intended here, just my brain going off on a tangent...

Rather than proving that breastmilk it better, more nutritious than formula etc, shouldn't it be up to the formula manufacturers to prove that it's as good?

If so many babies "need" sleep training, is it perhaps the adults that need adjustment or training rather than the babies?

If we're all doing the best for our respective families then why are we so worried and defensive about our decisions?

Anybody else have a random musing they'd like to add?
