My son is 16 months and he knows to sit in a circle for story time. I don't think he would know if he didn't attend daycare.

@looch: you're so right about how this varies based on the environment they've been in! I don't always think it's the best thing when I see super littles ones that, when surrounded by exciting things, will sit for extended periods. They're supposed to be busy exploring their environment and moving around.

I think this varies a lot based on what kids are exposed to. My son started day care at age 2 and I was freaking out because the kids had these little spots on the rug that they were sitting at on cue, and my son would just continue doing what he wanted.

Peer pressure got him sitting in the circle, once he realized everyone else was doing it, he did it to. Now, if he had been at daycare since 3 months of age, he would have learned that earlier.

Sometimes the kids have other things in mind, for this reason there are two teachers and they can either redirect the kids or take them out of the room if they need to use the bathroom or something.

How old was your LO when they could sit by themselves through storytime/circle activity? Does preschool/daycare require this of your LO? How do they handle it if your LO doesn't sit as long as they'd like?
