@travellingbee: @Mrs. Goose: I totally agree. Although for what it's worth T figured out how to sit from his belly before he started crawling. It actually slowed his progress toward crawling I think because he would pull one knee up so far that he'd practically end up tipping into the sitting position, if that makes sense. Crawling followed maybe 2 weeks later.

@travellingbee: plus another.

I will say though I don't *really* count it if they're pretty wobbly still.

Same as travellingbee. My daughter can sit unassisted for very long periods of time (she enjoys playing that way) and has been able to for 2 months now. She can't put herself in the sitting position though. I guess we taught her how to sit accidentally when I noticed she didn't need me to hold her up. She can bend all the way at the waist while sitting and reach for stuff and put herself back to sitting, but can't get that way from her back or belly.

I think getting into a sitting position solo is a skill. She can't crawl at all or put herself up on her knees yet.

@catomd00: get in and out? That's a separate skill to me. They don't do that until they crawl.

Sitting unassisted to me is when they can sit without anyone holding them. When they can balance. When they can only do that for a few seconds, that's "learning to sit". When they can sit for like at least a minute or so, I'd say that's "sitting."

For me, I don't count it really until they can support themselves for as long as they want and get in and out of the sitting position.

If they can sit unassisted for like 10 seconds, does that count? Or do they have to be completely stable.

DS is doing that tripod support when he is crawling into a sit position so he's more stable than DD. DD is not crawling yet but can sit for about 10-30 seconds, if I put her into a sitting position. She's stable but not stable... if that makes sense. She does not do that tripod yet. She does arch her back and that will bring her out of a sit position so I can't leave her unattended.

I just always wondered what the unassisted sitting meant to others.
