@photojane: instead of starting to push, they have you hang out while you continue to contract - so the baby moves down little by little on its own, less work for you afterward :)

I could sit up as well. They gave me an ice pack to stick down there and I took some Advil. The pain was manageable.

I tore, but I was able to sit up thanks to the Advil and ice diapers they gave me. I sat more on my tailbone then on my ladybirs too.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: @c.sassy: @bpcmarj:
so glad I'm not the only one out there! I just wish we were like the others and didn't have that problem. I'm definitely willing to try something next time that will prevent this problem. I think postpartum recovery was worse than labor and delivery. (however that was painful too!)

@Rainbow Sprinkles: I was also induced and in pain for weeks after. If I didn't take a steady dose of motrin (prescribed by my midwife) then I wouldn't have been avle to get off the couch! Most of the time I had to lay down. It was awful.

I was the same as you. I was in so much pain...sitting was horrible
And forget trying to get up on my own. I was miserable for a good two weeks. But I was induced as well...maybe that has something to do with it?

I couldn't labor down...I went from a 2.5 to a 6 to an 8 to a 10 in a little more than an hour...couldn't stop pushing and nearly ruptured my cervix. I had an episiotomy and 3rd degree tears, but I really believe the pain is all mental! I was up walking
around the next day.

I had 2nd degree tears I think? I was able to sit fine. Walked around with some assistance afterwards when my labor nurses allowed me. More bc the epi made my legs into jello. No pain meds though.

I pushed for 5 hours and was able to sit up and get around pretty easily pretty fast.. I was sore... But I feel like I was SO SWOLLEN that the pain didn't really hit me until a few days later. Even then it wasn't too bad. I am 16 days pp and still sore, but its very dull. I just had one 2nd degree perineal tear.

@Mrs. Jacks: @lovelife: I labored down until you could practically see DD's head. I'm positive that helped my short pushing time & stretching.

I'll try laboring down next time! I was induced with absolutely no progress so that could be part of it too.

I tore pretty badly but had no problems sitting in bed after DD was born. The bed was soft, the Advil helped, and I sit solidly on my butt. I didn't put any weight on my lady parts...

I agree with Mrs Jacks. I laboured down for two hours and even though I had a second degree tear, I wasn't really in any pain afterwards and never needed any pain meds. I think I struggled a bit the first time I tried to sit cross legged butother than that, was pretty mobile!

I was sitting up about 15 minutes after she was born. I had no strength to get myself there though, those fancy beds with the buttons to lift you up were the best.

I think a combo of baby high & pain meds/residual epi.
Or they could be like me & have no tearing. I was sitting & up walking around almost immediately.

I have had friends that couldn't do either though.

Ok, so a lot of my facebook friends have been having babies lately and I've seen tons of pictures of the new mom sitting on her bed (one leg bent/ one leg straight, legs crossing, sitting on the edge of the bed) and leaning over to look at the baby... I can't wrap my head around it.. When I had LO I couldn't sit like that for weeks! I was always leaning back on something so that there was no pressure down there. DH had to help me up and down for at least a week after we got home. I really want to know what the secret is because I was MISERABLE!
