I gained the same amount both times (around 22lbs) and my LO2 was smaller than LO1. She was nearly 3 weeks earlier though (41+2 vs. 38+4). She was about a lbs less than her brother who was a good 2.75 inches longer! I had totally different babies (they are still totally different today at 13 and 34m).

I gained about 10lbs more the 2nd time (but I started out 10lbs lighter), so I think I weighed the same at the end. My second LO was just slightly smaller than my first, but she was also almost 3 weeks early. I'm sure she would have been heavier if she had been born closer to the EDD.

My first was a preemie, and I only gained 7 pounds mostly because I skipped the third trimester, but if he had made it to term he would have been bigger than his nine pound little sister with whom I gained forty pounds.

I'm on track to gain exactly the same (40 lbs) as last time - but I'm underweight to begin with. M was 7.5 lbs and at almost 38 weeks, baby boy is averaging 6.5 lbs.

They were both average size (around 7lbs) and I gained nearly 50 lbs woth both of them which is insane to me. But i didn't have trouble losing it so I figure, that's just how my body makes babies.

@glitter: I had very low platelets which raises risks of intense bleeding. So, I couldn't have an epidural or spinal due to risk of bleeding in that area. A CS would have been under general anesthesia and the only pain option for afterward would have been 48 hours of morphine, which would inhibit breastfeeding and bonding, and according to my doctor, wouldnt do anything for my incision pain. Lastly, it would be very hard for them to manage my bleeding in the actual surgery itself. So the doctors were very, very, very resistant and did all they could to get me to a vaginal delivery. It was touch and go for awhile but it all worked out!... after 25 hours of labor, with contractions 1-3 min apart the entire time.

Close to the same birth weight.

Dd1 was 8 lbs 1.7 oz. I gained 27 lbs.
dd2 was 8 lbs 5.8 oz. I gained 40 lbs.

I had lost weight before the second pregnancy so delivered at exactly the same weight. Both were born right on time.

@DesertDreams88: just curious, if you don't mind sharing, why was a CS not an option? I've heard of normal delivery not being an option, but never heard so of a CS.

LO1 was 8lb,12oz
LO2 was 7lb,12oz

I had trouble putting and keeping on weight with both pregnancies. With my first I lost 15lbs in the first trimester, and when I delivered I was only 4lbs above my pre pregnancy weight (so 19lbs total).

With my second I put on 16lbs.

I don't think dieting=smaller babies. My midwives always told me the baby will take whatever nutrients they need from the mother and her diet is for her.

LO1 was 8 lbs 2 oz at 40+6. Lo2 was 7 lbs 9 oz at 39+1. So in my case I think LO2 being earlier was the difference maker. Some people say subsequent babies tend to come earlier but I don't think you can bank on that!

I also found that I was much less focused on what my delivery was going to be like the second time. I just wanted a healthy baby and mama and was more worried about how LO2 would eat and sleep. So I would hope your difficult experience wouldn't deter you from trying again!

LO2 was shorter and is now in a smaller percentile but both of them were exactly the same weight at birth. LO2 was a week later, though, so she would have been a little smaller born at the same time. I gained about the same amount both times (35-40lb).

My second was smaller by 1.5lbs she was 8lbs 10oz, my first was 10lbs 1oz. My weight gain was the same for both, 22 pounds.
My third was 10lbs 12oz, I gained fourteen pounds.

Basically the same. Both tiny. I am a small person (5'2 and 110 lb) and I gained 30 lb each time...with tiny babies.

LO1 was 5 lb 5 oz and 17.5 inches

LO2 was 5 lb 6 oz and 19 inches (diagnosed IUGR before birth). But he's grown at a much faster pace /filled out to his length.

I know there's the theory out there that all subsequent children will be larger / heavier than the first child, but I'm wondering if that holds true in reality. With LO1 being 8lbs 10oz with a difficult vaginal delivery (a CS was basically not an option), I'm a bit intimidated about the size of future children and how it will impact birth.

Part of a factor, I imagine, was my pregnancy weight gain. I was hungry all the time and gained 40 lbs. I wonder if I try to be more disciplined next time, if I'll gain a more healthy amount (25-35) and have a same size or a bit smaller baby?? Obviously nothing at all to endanger their health, though.

What was your experience, and influencing factors?
