We had a Carter's piece we loved so much that I bought another in the same size, just different color. I washed it, and it was so much smaller--unwearable.

My personal observations: Gap Baby short and wide, Carter's longish and lean, Monsoon huge, H&M have longer sleeves, Hanna seems average all around.

And shoes? Hopeless.

I feel like this would be great to put into chart format and added into the "guides". I don't have a lot of experience across brands and my LO is small for her age, but I'd say that gap runs large, especially around the waist for pants and shorts. Carters fairly runs true to size and sometimes a bit small and short. Leveret runs small in two piece pajamas and large in one piece zips.
Tea runs slightly large, HA run pretty TTS. Tucker and tate runs TTS, Peek runs slightly large

Carters sizing is all over the place. My son is 5 months and I just had to return a 0-3 month outfit because the shorts fell right off him, but he has some 3-6 stuff that fits fine.

I find Gap is big.

@looch: same here. We have to go try on pants as much as we both dislike it. But I hate having to return things so it's better in the end. I don't think there's any consistency between children's stores, which is one reason I stick to the same few brands since I know how large or small they run and I can buy accordingly.

@Bao: try the Carters size 5 instead of 5T. I ordered Olivia a shirt in 5 and it's a smidge bigger than her XS (4-5) cat and jack tee. I haven't tried the leggings though!

This is why I've pretty much resorted to having to go into a store to have my son try things on (as much as he and I both dislike it). Once I know the fit (especially for pants), I can resume shopping online. But I have made too many mistakes with wrong sizing to do it any other way now.

A couple months back I had my middle (17mo) in 2T leggings, a 12-18 month tunic, with a 3-6 month sweater...
Kids sizing is so messed up.

@Bao: I think Carters is inconsistent even between its own clothes! Their leggings run small compared to their other pants.

Sizes can very so much by brand!

I have found the same with carters leggings and Circo leggings. All of LO's carters leggings from last fall are too short for her to wear this fall (size 5T) but she still has several inches of length left on her Circo leggings and can still wear those no problem (also 5T).

Children's Place seems to run at least one size small, especially in tops. Bottoms are a little closer to other stores. At least it's usually consistent in that store. I feel like Carter's is all over the place even if the one brand.

Oh it's all over the place. I ordered my son some 9month pants on Amazon..... maybe he'll fit them when he's 18 months?

Do you find that most stores are pretty consistent with sizes for kids, or that they tend to vary depending on brand?

For example, I got LO a pair of 5T leggings at Target and then a pair at Carter's in a 5T, and the Carter's ones are at LEAST 2 inches shorter!
