My son had 25 in K. The teacher was a first-rate, highly experienced professional and we had zero problems or worries. We moved for 1st grade and there are only 18 kids in the class. The teacher is not quite as experienced as last year and I sometimes wonder about how she handles the class. But we are satisfied overall.

I’m in New Zealand and my wee girl (5.5yo) started school this year and she started the year with 15 kids and two teachers and after eight weeks the class now has 22ish kids and an extra release teacher. Kids start throughout the year at my girl’s school and the admin have said that they will probably split the class and add another teacher by the middle of the year. At the end of the 2017 school year their was approx 44 kids in the class with two teachers.

Our school as 20 per class (half day) with one teacher, and a paraprofessional who is in the room about 1/2 of the 1/2 day, (she's shared between classrooms). The kids sit at tables of 4, 5, or 6. In the second half of the year, they also break into something called "W.I.N." groups for various subjects so that the kids who need it can work at accelerated or slower paces. They sometimes change classrooms to do this.

20 sounds like a lot, but I'm in the classroom pretty regularly as a room parent, and I have to say, their teacher runs a tight ship. She is totally IN CHARGE and gets those kids to listen and perform - and they still love her! It was, however, a shift from pre-k, where they had 18-20 kids, but three full time teachers in the room. Compared to what we would have faced in NYC, however (25-30 kids in a full day class with one teacher and one aide), I feel like we've got it good.

Ok- I guess I won’t worry! My middle school classes that I teach have 18-26 kids. I just assumed that K might be under 20. As a teacher, I find the golden number lies somewhere between 18-22 students.

20 sounds really good to me. I've worked as an aide in a class of 36. You read that right, 36. They then added a class so it went down.

My dd's class had 28 this year and it was transitional kinder. They have a half day aide. Her teacher is seriously amazing!

@MamaCate: glad you were able to find what you wanted!! And that gives me hope :) I think we'll use open enrollment as well.... I just really hope I can find a school that I want to work at, AND send my child there. Right now the 2 districts I'd like to be in would mean a 10% pay cut and worse benefits :( I like teaching in my district, but 30 kids per class is too much and I can't do that to my children.

I just looked up the elementary school that my son will go to in a few years. Average is about 21 per class based on previous enrollment and total registered Kindergarten students in the school. It is one of the best elementary schools in our district (36 elementary schools in our district). They have a para in every class and the teacher stays with the students for K & 1st grade, so that helps a lot because the teachers learn how students learn and get to stick with them for 2 years.

We started at 17-18 but the state limit is 22 I think and some kids got added as the year went on (they have overflow from other schools to spread around, plus some move ins I think). Think about 21 now, one teacher. I was glad they started a little smaller. Also glad we have an experienced teacher good at keeping order

In my town the max is 21 per class for K, one teacher and one aide. It’s a big to do because they only have so many full day spots so a few kids who want full day are only getting half day, so some parents feel like they should just put one extra kid in a couple of classes (22 total) while others feel like they fought really hard to keep the max number down and don’t want to backtrack.

My LO won’t go to K until the next year so I’m just following alone but have no experience. But 20 seems reasonable to me.

Our district can go up to 24 in K, but our class only has 21. They are in small groups and do work as a whole class as well as table by table with the teacher. My son is learning so much! I was worried how he would do with less attention but he is doing great.

They do split the class up and half the class will switch with another teachers class for different subjects (one will do history and the other ELA). I like that he gets exposed to different teachers.

About 20 kids. Does it cause problems? No, the kids seem happy and overall, are learning lots. Does it mean less individual attention? Not sure, we've talked to the teacher a few times about how DS needs to be challenged more in one area, but the curriculum is the curriculum and I'm not sure she'd have the time or inclination to go beyond it even if the class was smaller.
