For us we've always been a size ahead of his age. So at 3 months he was in 3-6 months OR 6 months. At 1 year he was starting to wear 18 months. 18 months-2yo he was in 24 months and some 2T.
At 2 he was finally caught up to sizing. He's been in 2T till now and at 2.5 he's JUST starting to need 3T. So it seems like around 2 things maybe slowed down a little to keep us in the same size for longer (closer to a year but not quite). But he's still going to 3T before he's 3.

For summer though I wonder how much it matters? Like if 2T fits in the waist for your DD but not length, does it matter much if she's wearing shorts and dresses? I know for my son 2T pants are too short now but still fit good in the waist. So I'll probably use at least some of his shorts from last year (being a half inch too short isn't even noticeable since his shorts are already longer) till they truly don't fit or look ridiculous. But I don't have a girl so no idea if that works!

Mostly reiterating what other people said. I have a tall, skinny kid.

Gap fits wide and short. I stopped with Gap clothes when DS was around 2. Same with Old Navy and Crazy Eights. Oshkosh fit the best, especially with overalls being adjustable at the straps and not needing to the fit their tiny waist. Ralph Lauren fit even better, and I could find it at dept. stores or TJ Maxx type stores on sale.

If she's going to potty train soon, you may want to skip overalls, zippers, and buttons, and just buy elastic waist bands, especially if she goes to a daycare or school with this request.

Good advice from the previous posters. Another thing to conisider is when you potty train LO, pants fit differently when ther isn't a diaper under their pants. When LO potty trained, we had to go down a size in pants!

My LO is almost 21 months and is about 80% for height. Most of his height though is in his torso. I always have to size up for his shirts and pants are true to size. Right now I am buying pants and shirts in 2T. The shirts fit good and pants are big in length. I roll them. In a year from now I will definitely have him in 3T.

@Littlebit7: Here's some with an adjustable waist. It's a shame they don't show it in pictures, but it's a little tab on the inside of the waistband, on each side of the zipper. It's basically elastic that is invisible, but you can tighten the elastic and button it on the inside of the waist, which makes the waist smaller.

@Littlebit7: Janie and Jack has a ton of adjustable waist stuff. Basically anything that isn't made out of a stretchy material will have the adjustable waist. It's great. But even with the adjustable waist, I usually have to size slightly down for my oldest.

My oldest is 3.5 and my youngest is 18 months and they can both wear 2t skirs/shorts. My older girl needs 3t in pants or dresses for length, but she will swim in them unless they run slim or have some kind of adjustable stuff. Last summer, I also had my mom tack the waist (like, fold and sew) a bunch of skirts and shorts because I couldn't find summer stuff that fit her waist that weren't super short.

Sizing is weird. Or I guess just children's bodies are so variable. My kids can wear each other's clothes but how they look in them is totally different.

Also, my oldest wore a skirt last Christmas that was a 3-6 months skirt....and she was 3, haha. True story.

DD is pretty avg and I am pretty certain she can fit 2T this whole year. I'm keeping her in 2T for spring/summer, but fall/winter will size up to 3T and also wear anything 2T she still fits into. She is currently 26 mo.

My dd, who was at least around the 75th % in height, was in the 2t til about 2y9m to 3. But things shrink in the wash so the leggings would eventually be capri length. Even within a brand we had different experiences depending on the style. Adjustable waists are a good suggestion. I think OshKosh (which is also Carters brand) worked well around that age.

DS just turned 10 months and is in 3T for shirts and 24m for pants (he's 28lbs and 31" - 100th percentile for both). 2T shirts fit, but he has a long torso so for spring/summer stuff we're just going straight to 3T so his shirts will last until the fall. Pants are the most awkward for us, because depending on the material some of the 24m pants are too small in the hip area. 2T pants don't solve the problem though since they're just longer, not wider. We're kind of in sizing limbo for bottoms right now so I just go by what fits him and ignore the age recommendation.

Gap seems to fit my boys but the waist is huge if it's not adjustable. Honestly, I mostly get clothes secondhand but if I buy new it's usually Gap. I loved Target brand before they changed it.

I don't think there is any rule that you can follow. My almost 3yo is on the brink of outgrowing his size 5 pants in the waist. We have to cuff the pants. He doesn't look fat but he is broadly built and tall for his age too.

You need to get adjustable waist pants! My oldest is so skinny but closer to average height so he usually sticks to the same size as his age but could probably still fit into 18 month size waist. My second is bigger than his brother at the same age but has been wearing a lot of the clothes at the same age.

I would suggest pants with adjustable waists. B is 3 and wearing 2T for height, but 12-18 month shorts because that's what waist size fits him. The only way we can do pants is to buy adjustable waists and tighten them all the way up. (Related: why do so many sweat pants have fake ties at the waist?!?! Why put strings there if you're not going to make them functional?)

I think your kid fits into what your kid fits into. They may stay at a certain size for a long time, or they go through it really quickly. DS is about 3.25 and in the summer leading up to his 2nd birthday (in Nov) he wore 2T/24m, and in the summer leading up to his 3rd birthday he wore mostly 3T. I will say that 2T was the first size that he wore for a really long time. Like all spring and summer and maybe fall too, versus growing out of something in 3 months.

I have given up trying to figure out sizes. But I do agree that summer things are more forgiving. Last summer my then just turned 3 year old wore bike shorts under dresses, ranging from size 2t to 5t. Seriously.

2T is theoretically for all of age 2, but different brands fit kids differently, so it's kind of a mix and match to find what works for you!

Xander is pretty petite and very thin. He's about to turn 4 and is JUST starting to wear 4T pants, but he's been in 2T pants forever! And over the summer, he wore 18m shorts!

My son is about to turn 3 and has been growing out of most of his 2T stuff recently. He is a very muscular and lean kid...always has been. He's right around the 50th percentile for height and I think he was in the 60-70s for weight?

In my opinion, Gap and Old Navy clothes fit wider and shorter, so my son usually grows out of their stuff first. All his ON/Gap things are getting too short at the ankles and wrists. He can usually wear Carter's longer than Old Navy/Gap, but usually only a month or two longer. When I needed to purchase a new pair of khakis for him this winter, I went with 3T even though he could have worn 2Ts because I knew I would get more use out of them that way.

@peachykeen: that is true about summer sizing. that makes me feel a little better if I buy too large
I was just at Zara the other day and bought a few things in size 2-3 and then got home and was like...oh man should she be in that size yet? It just seemed like a big jump from 18-24.
I was going through her closet yesterday an realized I only have 5 items larger than a 2T...and most are dresses.

DD is 75% for height and about 50% for weight. She is just finally fitting properly into 2T pants at 2.5 but some of the waists are still big on her. Lengthwise, pants seem to fit her pretty true to age/size, so she must carry her height in her torso.

The nice thing with the toddler sizes is that if an item doesn't fit this summer, it's likely to fit the next summer since they stay in one size close to a full year. DD won't turn 3 until late August, but I'm buying any new summer dresses in 3T just to be safe. The majority fit her okay with plenty of room to grow - dresses and short-sleeve tops seem to be more forgiving. I need to try last year's shorts on her, since she usually wears a size down with shorts since length doesn't matter as much (she wore 18m last year and hasn't grown much in her waist).

My DD is 20 months and is starting to rapidly outgrow her 2T clothes. Although she has been in 2T clothes longer than any other size. Generally she was always double her size vs. age.....so at 6 months, she was in 12M clothes. So I'm surprised she stayed in 2T cloths this long to be honest!

It's just so hard because they are all different. DS one was in a size 2T from 2 to almost 3. DS two is only 13 months and is already in 24 month clothes. And also it depends on gender, because the boys clothes are baggier and I think they stay in them longer. The girls clothes are fitted more so I think they grow out of them quicker...

So my LO is about to turn two. She has grown out of 24 month carters and gap in length. She's even starting to grow out of some 2T pants in length (which is odd because she's not off the charts tall, but def upper 75th percentile and taller than most of her kid friends). Both DH and I are average sized.
I"m trying to buy ahead (of course) for the spring and summer.
Did your kids stay in 2T for a while? I know this is a dumb question, but some people have said 2T is theoretically for a 2 year old until 3 (which is backwards from sizing up till 24 months....for example 18m always meant 12-18m to me). But the fact she is growing out of some 2T has me a little confused.
Thoughts? She is thin, so same pants are typically too large in the waist but are becoming high waters. Shorts, unless they are slim, slide off. Dresses are short on her.

How does sizing work?? is a 2t really from age 2 until they turn three roughly? she probably about 34-35" and 28 lbs.
I want to get the most bang for my buck out of clothes, but don't want her to look sloppy all summer.
