@looch: thanks for the brand recommended, I found some not too crazy priced items on Amazon. I'm going to try to go to a discount store similar to TJ Max tomorrow to see if I can find any deals. Then I can order whatever else I need before we go (because I have to wash everything before I wear it).

I am not a seasoned skier, but I have taken lessons as an adult (in the Alps) and I wore pretty basic things.

I really like the base layers from Odlo. They are on the expensive side, though. Get them in plain colors and you can pass them down to your kids.

It is truly about layers. I usually wear:

sports bra
long sleeve shirt
fleece sweatshirt
outer jacket
I have underamour ski leggings, but any leggings will do if your snow pants are good
snow pants
ski socks - or any type of boot socks
I also have a face mask; ear warmers; gloves.

I would use any of that if it is about 35F or so degrees. If it is colder.. like 10F I would consider a base cami and another layer of pants. The thing about being a novice is that if you are learning it is a lot of sitting/not moving around.... in snow. It will get cold.

I would try to find a ski helmet that is adjustable and shop in person if possible. The most important thing is a good fit to keep your noggin safe.

I wear yoga pants or leggings and a workout top on top. Then I layer with a thinner Fleece and then my ski jacket on top. If it's particularly cold I add an outerwear Fleece before my jacket.

I'm in the NE and I wear a thermal base layer, ski pants and jacket, warm socks, balaclava, and hat with ear flaps. I've never used a sports bra for skiing. I also tend to be pretty cold when skiing, it's not very aerobic. So warm gloves and socks are important.

Layers are key! I live in Utah so I dress similar to @Ms.Badger: Definitely avoid anything made of cotton.

I do a thermal base layer (I currently use the brand 32 degrees which is really lightweight and really warm, and it's not too expensive so wins all around). I do add an extra layer over top to make sure my neck and chest are covered. I usually double up on socks- one regular pair under my thermals and thin ski ones over top. Both my jacket and pants have vents in the side that you can zip open if you get too warm- I'd much rather do that than go underdressed. I find that most days my helmet is plenty warm, but on extra cold days I have a thin skull cap I can use under. You will definitely want goggles, even if it is sunny. They help keep your face warm!

@winniebee: I'm browsing for Smart wool right now.

I'm hesitant to invest what seems like a lot of money for some high tech pieces since I don't ski (yet!). But my DH pointed out that as the kids get older, maybe it's something we could do more frequently since we are only an hour or so away from the closest slopes. And if the gear lasts for years...

@lamariniere: So I usually ski in Colorado where it isn't particularly cold. I go with leggings and either a long sleeve base layer OR if it's colder short sleeve base layer and fleece under Jacket and Ski pants. I wear very thin hiking socks (REI) under my somewhat thicker ski socks (I blister easily and this two sock solution it best for me). Then fleece headband under the helmet, thin gloves under ski gloves. I guess I really like to layer.
Have fun!

@Mrs. Microscope: @808love: all of my leggings, except one pair, are cotton. Sounds like that isn't ideal.

@808love: and yeah, ski stuff is SOOOO expensive! We were in a store earlier today and I was blown away by some of the prices. But it was definitely high tech, super lightweight, fancy fancy.

Ski pants
Neckwarmer (turtle fur or smart wool)

I would definitely have goggles/balaclava, especially if it is snowing out. Don't do leggings, use a real thermal base layer. I have a patagonia set that lasted over 12years and I use them a lot, for pajamas sometimes. A good hat has fleece inside and ear flaps. I get cold easily though. Get good, non-puffy gloves. Again the high tech ski stuff, looks thin but actually keeps you nice and warm because of the fabric. My things are in storage and not coming out until spring skiing otherwise I could look up the brands. Look for waterproof seams as you will be falling a lot as a beginner *get used to the idea* and wetness is annoying/cold. Also you may be sore so you might not want to plan to go several days in a row if you are a beginner. There are high tech ski socks that make a big difference. I wear a thin wicking one on the inside and then a thicker for outside. The last ones I got for LO were eurosocks and that worked well.

Tight workout leggings can be good, and get some sort of lightweight thermal top. You want sweat wicking stuff, so workout clothes can do the trick! Get medium weight ski socks, and a good pair of gloves. I also recommend a thin balaclava for the wind, as well as some polarized goggles. Wear sunscreen if it is at all sunny, snow reflection burns are the worst on your face! Have fun!

I get cold easily, so maybe take with a grain of salt, but I would never go skiing without at least one base layer. If you anticipate sweating, avoid cotton since it keeps moisture right next to your skin. Go with synthetics or wool. Ski socks are quite thin, you want the boots as tight against your skin as you can get them, for better control. You're going to want goggles and good mittens too.

We're going skiing soon and I have no idea how to dress. I have ski pants and a ski jacket, the jacket has a zip out fleece. But what do I wear underneath? Do I need some sort of base-layer? Leggings or tights? Sports bra? Are ski socks usually thick or thin? I have zero athletic clothes, help!

I'm a complete novice and plan on taking lessons. I get warm easily, so I'm more worried about being hot and sweaty rather than cold. But I don't know how intense the lessons will be, so maybe I don't need to worry about this? Also, I plan on buying my own helmet, any specific features I should be looking for?

What do you seasoned skiers wear? Any other suggestions or advice?
