@Trailmix: Ha I guess it's just an experiment no matter what. She is waking up around 8, but wakes up once or twice a night to eat. I know once she starts STTN she will wake up earlier so I'm taking the 8 am wake ups while I can.

@Smurfette: Yeah that's what I'm thinking. So frustrating. BUT I have to remember that it's still way better than it was a few months ago. I just feel so bad because I KNOW she is tired, and she has this really whiny cry that she does that is so annoying. But you can't reason with a 6 month old.

I was actually going to say the opposite, haha! What works for me is never having them nap for longer than 2 hours, this keeps them on schedule. Mine do naps at 8:30 and 1:30, give or take 30 mins but they get up between 5-6 am (which is awesome. Not.)...

@Foodnerd81: I would try 2 hours and see if that helps. Naps are so frustrating!

@Smurfette: This is exactly what I've been doing-- putting her down about 3 hours after wake up-- and it's not working. Half the time she ends up not sleeping at all. The other half, of course, she does nap, maybe a short one, but enough to get her through the day.

The most frustrating part is that she is so all over the place with seemingly nothing to do with what I did!

@Foodnerd81: I would let her sleep as long as she wants too. Then 3 hours later, next nap, awake time, and then bed. R doesn't always have 4 hours between afternoon nap and bedtime but she goes to bed no problem. R started doing better with naps(well at home anyway) when we started doing 9 and 2/230 for nap times.

@Trailmix: I have heard of it, and it seems like the timing would work for her except I can't seem to work out the schedule. She usually wakes up around 8, goes down for her first nap at 10. Then it starts getting unpredictable because sometimes it's a 40 minute nap sometimes it's over 2 hours. Should I start waking her up from the first nap if it goes long? How long would it ideally be? I'm thinking I might be putting her down a little late for the second nap too, but it's hard timing wise because I don't want to put her down shortly before she is due to eat, I try to fit solids in, and the early afternoon is when we do fun stuff. So I realize my inconsistency is part of the problem but I don't know what I SHOULD be doing consistently.

Have you heard/tried the 2-3-4 schedule? It's 2 hours after first wake-up, baby goes down for a nap then three hours after they wake up from that nap, down for the second nap and then four hours later, it's bed time. Mine both fought their naps around 6 months too and it was so frustrating but just keep doing it consistently, along with the same nap routine at the same time and she'll get it eventually. I know how frustrating it is but she'll get there!

Going through this with my 6 month old as we speak. He has been fighting his afternoon nap for hours, and the more overtired he gets the harder it is for him to settle. We don't have a hard time putting him to bed at night, but naps have been brutal! I just did CIO for the first time, because nothing else was working. After my third time going in to soothe, he started falling asleep in my arms so I put him down. He was hysterical for about a minute and then started whimpering and finally fell asleep. I think he wore himself out. Fingers crossed this nap lasts longer than 15 minutes!

Well, another failed nap, after rocking her and soothing her, then changing a wet diaper and rocking and soothing, then nursing to sleep-- still woke up after a couple minutes.

I guess I have to admit to myself that part of the problem is I do mess with her afternoon schedule sometimes, since that's when we do activities--but even when we are out about half the time she will fall asleep and have a 40 minute nap in the car seat.

@Revel: I have read that 4 hours is a pretty good stretch between last nap and bed at this age, actually. If her last nap ends after 2:30 I'm OK with it, but when she wakes up at 12 and won't nap again, it sucks!

My LO at 8 months still has varying lengths of naps, but it has been pretty much impossible to get her to go down for more than two a day in the crib since she was about 6 months or so. The only solution I've found if she wakes from nap #2 at 2:30 or earlier is a stroller/car/carrier nap. If she wakes around 3 or so I just let her go until bedtime (7pm) even if she gets a bit overtired by the end of that four hour stretch.

I have had luck some days by stretching her awake time between nap one or two to get the timing to line up better, but this doesn't always work.

I'll be interested to see the replies to this. E is doing the same thing - I think she's gearing up for dropping her third nap. I googled it and the stuff I read said to go with it but to put her down earlier for bed until she adjusts - 5pm, 5.30pm, 6pm..... Well that's all well and good but she will be starting daycare in a week and we wont be getting home with her until 6pm. Bottle, bath and bed and you're looking at 7.... sigh.....

For the last couple of weeks, C has been refusing to take an afternoon nap as often as she takes it. It's really frustrating and results in a very tired little baby by bedtime-- not to mention a tired mommy!

Her naps are still all over the place- one day she will sleep for 40 minutes in the morning, the next she will sleep for 2+ hours. If she does the 40 minute nap, she will usually take a second around noon, at least (often also 40 minutes).

But she cannot go from 12 or 1 pm until bedtime at 7 without a nap without also having a meltdown. Any tips or tricks that helped your LO with the afternoon nap? She is 6 months old, seems tired between 2-3 hours after the last nap, so I put her down then. She goes down all sleepy looking, then fusses a little bit but seems about to go to sleep, then just starts crying and won't go to sleep.

And off to try and settle her again but not to hopeful.
