Or, even better, if you have the time to plan ahead: combine two packs to do week 1 week 1 week 2 week 2 week 3 week 3.

I know this is too late to help you (sorry I missed the post when it went up!), but maybe it will help someone searching the same problem.

Your "period" on birth control pills isn't really a period, it is bleeding triggered by progesterone withdrawal. With triphasic pills, there's a slightly different amount of hormones in each week. Week 1 has the lowest amount of progesterone, week 2 is a little higher, week 3 is highest. For a lot of people, this means that going from the high levels in week 3 down to the lower levels in week 1 still triggers the withdrawal bleed. You can hack your pills by taking the second pack backward (week 3, week 2, week 1). A backup method of contraception is a good idea, but, you're much more likely to be successful skipping your period.

Sorry you had a super period-y vacation. :(

*** UPDATE.

So, I went with the POLL and not the comments, and skipped the 'period week' pills and started the new pack.

I had my period for 2 weeks straight through the entire vacation.

wish I just had the period for the week. UGH.... OH WELL.

@Silva: thanks!

@DesertDreams88: thanks. yeah, my periods vary from month to month even though I'm on the pill! Sometimes they're light-ish, and only last a few days. Sometimes it's a 5 full days.

@ChitownRo: Ahh, good to know. thank you.

It's much easier to skip on monophasic pills. Triphasic can result in more spotting I believe

I don't think I had triphasic pills and I never tried to skip completely but I always pushed it by a couple days forward or backward and never had problems. Then again, I have vey light periods anyway.

I tried once and spotted pretty heavily the whole week. I've heard it works for some people though!

Are you talking about this coming period or your next?

When I needed to change my period week (usually for vacation or performance) I tried to plan it out ahead of time. I would skip my period the month before, so that it would change the important month by a week. Then I didn't have to worry about spotting or irregularity during the important time.

@MamaBear87: UGH, yeah, this is exactly what i DON'T want to happen.

@Lahela017: hmm, ok, so when you started the first week with the new pills (that was supposed to be the placebo week) you didn't spot, but then did after that??

I'm on vacation for 2 weeks, so, just suck it up and have my period for 4/5 days, or risk spotting for the whole 2 weeks?

I hate my period! HA...

I tried this once for a vacation. I heavily spotted the whole vacation and then for the whole time until the placebo week again. It sucked and wasn't worth it

From my experience and from what my doctor has told me, skipping the blank week on a tri-phasic pill causes you to spot until you have your period week again.

That said, I did this on my honeymoon (not knowing I would spot) and I was glad I did. I didn't have any bleeding on my vacation. The spotting didn't start until a week after what what would have been my period week. It wasn't super heavy, but it wasn't light either.... I was really happy when that month was over, but it was worth the uncomfortable few weeks in order to be in the clear for my honeymoon.

Do you guys occasionally skip your 'period' week on the Pill??

Does it work? I feel like I used to do it a LONG time ago and I can't remember if it worked... I know long term it's not great because you'll go through your pill too fast and insurance won't cover, but if you do this, do you get breakthrough bleeding or any other issues????

I'm going on vacation and i'm supposed to have my period that week, and I'd love to skip it. But if it's going to screw me up, I'd rather not!!

Also, I've been taking tri-phasic pills forever. Took them for years before I had my babies, and have been taking them after. I do well on them, they don't really affect my mood or anything.
