Honestly, I personally think teaching a bby to self soothe IS sleep training...at that age I think it's ok to let her fuss for a few min to see if she can put herself back to sleep, bit in terms of teaching her how to do it, that's usually when sleep training comes into play. You might find that moving her to her own room helps, as she might inadvertently have those few extra min to settle herself while u make your way over there. Good luck!

Usually if I wait it out a few mins B will comfort himself back to sleep. It is hard not to attend to him right away but I know he needs to learn to self soothe. I never let him get to the point of crying, but if he is fussing and whining I let him be.

@Adira: yeah I'm thinking if I hold off on picking her up and feeding her shell get used to it and stop waking. She hates pacis but the rocking has the same effect. It's encouraging that it helped your baby!

I'm not positive, and maybe someone else will have better advice, but it seemed like with Xander that he just slowly stopped waking up early in these cases. He used to wake up and I'd immediately pop a pacifier in his mouth or something to get him to fall back asleep, and eventually he just stopped waking up during those times! But maybe someone else will have more helpful advice, since mine seems to be just "wait and see." :)

Lo is just over five weeks old. She is not a great napper but her night sleep is pretty good- usually one longish stretch, between 4 and 6 hours, and another two hours and change after that usually. She has slept as long as 7 hours at a time.

Tonight she stared waking earlier than I thought she should, and since I knew she had eaten a lot before bed and is capable if sleeping 6-7 hours without eating,, I tried just rocking her for a minute in the rock and play in the dark before picking her up to eat. Lo and behold, it worked- for over and hour! She would start fussing and grunting, more than the usual I'm starting to wake up noises, it was about to turn into cries, when I would rock and she would settle herself again. I finally picked her up and it was almost seven hours again.

So, she doesn't need to be up at 4-5 hours to eat, at least it seems. But this way I was still up to rock her anyway. How do I encourage her to resettle herself without my help? I'm not going to full on sleep train or anything, she is only five weeks. She's still sleeping in our room for now but we are open to moving her soon, but her room is on the opposite side of the apt. She's double swaddled at night and doesn't usually break out of it until morning.
