@JJ2626: I agree with your advice. I would try for an earlier bedtime.

@Umbreon: I think the key things are - is he happy? Does that schedule work for you? As long as those things are true and his night sleep isn't significantly different than the norm, you're good!

Thanks everyone! Glad to know it's not too bad, I was worried he wasnt getting enough sleep over night. He wakes up happy but still wasnt sure.

We will be off work for a couple weeks soon and may play around with the sleep schedule then. We are home but my parents are watching him and the nap schedule has been working for them, and I don't want to mess with it too much just yet if I can help it

Definitely black out curtains! His schedule doesn’t sound too bad but I would try for an earlier bedtime to see if it helps. Can you make sure he is up from his second nap by 3:30 so that then he can go to bed closer to 7? It may shift his whole schedule for the better.

Here's our experience with a 17 month old, just for comparison.

We are very strict about sleep training in our house. At home, he takes a single 3 hour nap in the afternoon (we usually have to wake him up!), and sleeps about 7:30-6:30 every night. We leave him in his crib awake until we are ready, usually around 7. And he doesn't make any noise.

When he's at daycare his single nap is more like 1.5-2 hours, but it doesn't change his overnight sleep habits.

We use blackout curtains, a sound machine, a pacifier, and do not respond to crying (though we haven't heard anything from him since he was around 6 months old). At daycare they don't use blackout curtains or a sound machine, and he sleeps on a mat on the floor instead of a crib.

Agree with above - even if it doesn’t change the sleep hours now, blackouts are great for kids with lower sleep needs especially through transitions. I would try one nap for a bit and see what happens - even just one longer nap would be preferable to me! But every kid is different on when they need that.

That is a good amount of night sleep for a child that age. Total sleep for most toddlers is between 12-14 hours (and that includes the nap(s)). I always recommend blacking out the room, and I do think it helps. You may not see your son sleeping more than 10/10.5 hours over night until they switch to 1 nap. My son didn't start sleeping 11 hours over night until he was 22 months old and firmly on 1 nap.

My only real advice is to get black out curtains, and make sure your son has 6 hours of wake time before bed. Otherwise, it sounds like he's sleeping pretty good.

@Umbreon: I think that's a very good amount of sleep! Sometimes its helpful to look at genetics... What are you and DH like in terms of sleep? My husband and I are low sleep needs (7.5 absolute max) and our kids are on the low end. DS1 slept 7-4:30/5 until he was over 3. Could NEVER get him to sleep in until he was older. a good 2 hour nap.
My current 17 month old sleeps 7-6 and a 1.5 hour nap and is super happy.
Maybe soon tho your son will drop the 2nd nap. My kids did at 13 and 15 months.

LO is almost 15 months old. I started weaning him from middle of the night feeds about 5 days ago and it's gone way better than I expected.

He goes down around 8 - cant seem to get him down earlier than that. But hes been waking up around 6:30. I dont know if it's because I stopped feeding him in the night.. he still wakes up around 3ish but fusses for a few min and goes back to sleep. It's getting better with each night... I vaguely remember hearing him last night.

He still has two naps a day. Ranging from 30 min to 1 hour each. He usually doesnt sleep more than 2 hours total during the day.

Should he be sleeping more over night? I wonder if the sun is waking him up. We could black out the windows better. Should we move him to one nap?

He doesnt fight the naps during the day but maybe we should try to switch to one nap? Or is the amount of time he is sleeping okay?
