I was never really able to find a correlation between daytime sleep and nighttime sleep. I wish it were so though!

Totally true for us! The days she has great naps she'll usually sleep at night from 7:30-5:30, eat, up at 8:30. If her naps are compromised, she'll have multiple night wakings and be up early for the day,

Not true for us. I bought into this too but my lo just doesn't need a lot of sleep. When she is over tired she sleeps better at night. You are her mom and know her the best so just trust yourself! The moment I put down the books and realized that all babies are different, I was much happier.

So true for us! The better she napped during the day, the better she slept at night. We have always seen a direct correlation between the quality/quantity of her daytime sleep and the quality of her night time sleep!

Not really true for us.. Only if the nap(s) was/were WAY off. Otherwise it was a meltdown but not necessarily a bad night.

It's true to an extent. If she has a really bad nap day, she might actually sleep a bit better that night because she is so exhausted, so in that case it's not true.

Occassionally true for us... He wouldn't always sleep longer if he was more tired, but he also didn't sleep longer/better if he was well-rested. Until he was 6 months old, he lacked any consistent sleep routine at all. I never knew when he would decide to nap or for how long. It was frustrating but a relatively short period of time before he adjusted.

Sleep didn't beget sleep for us. There seems to be an optimal ever changing amount of nap time, but too much nap time is worse than too little.

Sadly not true for us. I *really* bought into this and when I was on mat leave, I was pretty rigid about LO's naps, because she's a crap night time sleeper. She used to sleep 1.5-2 hours in the morning, 1.5-2 hours right after noon, and then a small 45 minute nap around 4:30 every day. Bedtime at 8. Never more than 2 hours of wake time...

and she would wake up all night long.

Then I went back to work and she went to day care, where she sleeps maybe an hour TOTAL a day. Like, they just can't get her to sleep (mystery to me, because she naps great at home on weekends).

And her night time sleep is *exactly* the same, no worse no better. It sucks.

It didn't really work like that for us. The first few months she tended to sleep better at night when she hadn't napped so much during the day. At 4.5 months it doesn't seem to make a difference how her night goes based on daytime sleep.

Now that DS is 5 months old and pretty consistent with his sleep schedules, I would agree with this statement. I always know we're going to have a bad night when something funky happened with his naps that day.

What happened up until now is his first night sleep stretch got longer and longer over time until he was only waking once at night. He usually sleeps from 7pm - 3am then back down until 7am. If he skips a nap during the day or if his naps weren't at least an hour each, he'll still go down at 7 but wake up maybe three times and want to be up for the day super early like at 5am.

That isn't true for us, but I think it just depends on the kid. My son's sleep is the same no matter what. Naps, bedtimes, etc don't really affect the quality or quantity. But he doesn't require tons of sleep either.

So D is 11 weeks and I'm really confused about his sleep. Up until recently his sleep had slowly been getting better, but we were still struggling with really short stretches. He would typically do a 3 hour stretch, then 2 hours and around 5/6am 1-1.5 hour stretches. We just started daycare last week and the days he went there (Monday-Wednesday), he was so exhausted he sleep a 6 hour one day and a 7 hour stretch the next day. Then when he was home with me it was like his sleep had regressed to what he was doing a month or more ago.

When he's home he naps really well. I usually get a 2-3 hour nap out of him in the morning and then various naps in the afternoon. At daycare he was taking 20-45 minute naps about 3-4 times a day.

Everything I've read about baby sleep says that sleep begets sleep and he should sleep better the days he's home and well rested and not over tired. But the reality is that he's so exhausted after short naps all day and huge wake times, that we're finally getting decent stretches out of him. I don't understand how this makes any sense or what to do to get those longer stretches when he doesn't go to daycare.
