Absolutely!!! This holds 100% true for our LO and has since she was a newborn. The better she sleeps during the day, the better she sleeps at night. If she is having an extra long nap, I assume she needs it and let her sleep. After the initial week or so where she had her days and nights mixed up, I was firmly in the camp that naps of any duration, at any time, are good. We still found that even if LO took a long nap and woke up quite late, relative to her bedtime, she would still start exhibiting her sleepy cues at the normal bed time. Even now at 12.5 months, if she has crappy day time naps, we prepare ourselves for somewhat crappy night time sleep, and vice versa. So true for us!

If lo doesn't get enough sleep during the day then it definitely results in more wakeups at night.

Well I think as a young baby when my son had bad naps he slept worse at night. But if he slept too much during the day he was also up at night. I never woke him though.

Yes, I'm a big believer. Yesterday my 9.5-month-old took a FIVE AND A HALF HOUR NAP, from 9:30am-3pm. He was super happy! (and it turned out to be a one-nap day)

Sleep begetting sleep is definitely true for us. I put my DS to bed 15 min earlier last night (reading his cues) and he slept in an hour past normal. If one of them took say a 4 hour nap in the middle of the day though, I might be in trouble.

DH always pokes fun at this whenever we have a great day and awful night. Honestly we've never seen a correlation that was super strong. If he gets way overtired he naps poorly but otherwise its usually completely random. He's not a sleepy kid but I've never woken him and figure if he's sleeping longer he needs it

Definitely! The only exceptions would be, as mentioned, sleeping too late in the day, and if they slept just an insane amount during the day (like 10 hours or something). Otherwise, I would never worry about too much daytime sleep when they're little.

i don't feel that whether LO gets more/less naps during the day affects his nighttime sleep. and the few times i put him to bed early, we got mixed results.

Definitely agree that sleep begets keep. Remember that for young babies daytime and nighttime sleep are two separate and unique entities.

At 11 weeks, DD takes three long (2 to 3 hour) naps each day, and sometimes a short evening nap as well (30 to 45 minutes). She then sleeps between 7 and 8 hours at night without waking.

ETA: Some of the best advice I received from my LC (who does a ton of work with babies that goes beyond BFing, and who has advanced degrees in babies' cognitive development)is that babies are way smarter than we give them credit for. They know what they're doing and what they need. If they're sleeping, let them sleep. I used to wake DD up to eat every three hours. My LC convinced me to just let her wake on her own. It was really hard to do at first, but that's what I do now and she is a better sleeper than ever!

You know, I worried about this *so much* in the beginning. We always had a good night sleeper (up every 3 hours like clockwork, then up every 4 hours, then finally she sleeps from 9-3, then down until 630) and I was *always* worried that a day of all-day-sleeping would make her NOT sleep at night. It simply never happened. Now, if she napped from 3pm-6pm, she wouldn't go to bed at 8pm or 9pm easily.

Usually, yes. If she doesn't sleep well that day and is crabby, she generally doesn't sleep well at night. BUT...i don't know that the issue is SOLELY related to sleep. I usually chalk it up to a growth spurt, where she sleeps like shit for a 48 hour window, then suddenly sleeps good again at night. Let them sleep, I say :)

I think that at that age, they still sleep a lot. That being said, I have no idea. I always woke up Xander if he napped for two hours, because I was afraid he'd get his days and nights reversed. You'll have to let us know how tonight goes!

Yes. In general, for us, sleep begets sleep...because when babies are overtired due to not napping well, it's harder for them to fall asleep at night and it leads to those every 2-3 hour wakeups--so bizarre that they wake up MORE when they're tired, but babies are weird!

The only thing I do is I don't let him nap too close to bedtime.

FOr your LOs 6 weeks is a HUGE growth spurt time so I would guess that they really really need the sleep!! It's super normal for them to have periods of crazy long naps when they're that young. My LO would often take 3 2+ hour naps and still sleep ok at night.
