so sorry that you guys are struggling with sleep, I know how much it sucks! We did not do a sleep consultation with our toddler, but we did use one when she was around 6 months old and then again around 11 months old. And we used the baby sleep science people both times. I really liked them! They were really helpful, and offered solutions that involved both extinction CIO and a more gentle method. And they lined it out for you, which I liked. I also could email them with any questions I came up with during the process. Do you have Facebook? Another place I found helpful is the precious little sleep Facebook page. You can post a question and people can help troubleshoot. Good luck!

@erinbaderin thanks for the info.

@mama bird he's always been a bad sleeper but nothing like this. I could write a novel about the sleep issues since he was born, lol. Yeah, we are not CIO people and have never done it, and it's not really what I want to do or something I'm comfortable with... BUT we have all got to get some sleep, especially LO. He is a wreck during the day.

@dahlia still nursing, but not sure he's waking up to nurse - I mean he does nurse once he's up, but he's not pissed off if DH goes in and holds him. He just started daycare so I think I want to wait to wean, plus I don't really feel like he's ready. Thanks for the recommendation on the sleep consultant.

Has anyone used the Baby Sleep Science people? https://childsleepscience.wordpress.com/ I like that they seem more qualified, and I listened to the toddler sleep webinar and it makes a lot of sense to me. Some of these sleep consultants seem to be just random people.

Not the age group you're asking about, but I had similar concerns. We used a sleep consultant at 6 months who was associated with Dana Obleman/Sleep Sense. She helped us figure out the ideal schedule, and then yes, it was CIO but with checks (which we abandoned because they made DD more upset). I sort of felt like I already knew everything she told me since I had read so many books and websites. At the same time, however, having paid her gave me motivation to stick with it because I didn't want to waste money.

Another thought - are you still nursing? Do you think weaning would encourage him to sleep more? Even after we sleep trained DD she still woke up once a night for a long time. We weaned at 16 months and she's slept 12 hours straight every night since then.

Sounds familiar :sad: Was he always a bad sleeper, or did something set this off? Do you think he's in some discomfort, or hungry? Or maybe it's just a habit?

I've posted about the same thing a couple of months ago and got tons of good suggestions. A lot of people were saying late bedtime might be the problem (it wasn't but a lot of kids really do struggle with staying up late). Others said the problem was inconsistent response when DD wakes up (which was spot on). We had to let DD cry but DH was right there with her so it wasn't quite CIO. I couldn't do it because she got very upset if she couldn't nurse.

Of course what worked for us might not work for you, but I hope you find a solution soon!!!

ETA: found your old post. Sounds a bit like DD all right. She was teething and uncomfortable but we had to go ahead and sleep train anyway, because nothing we did was comforting her and Tylenol didn't help either.

Yep. We used a sleep consultant at 18 months and again at 26 months after we ruined his sleeping once baby #2 was born. At 18 months it was basically CIO which I wasn't opposed to because we had done it before (yeah, we've sleep trained our son THREE TIMES) and I knew it would work relatively quickly and easily. I wouldn't recommend the woman we worked with that time. At 26 months we used Eva Klein (mysleepingbaby.com) and she was very good. She does a free 15 minute consultation if you want to get a sense of what she would recommend. We basically did the shuffle - 3 nights sitting beside his bed, 3 nights sitting across the room, 3 nights just outside his door but visible, 3 nights outside his door but not visible, and then like two months sitting on the stairs (this part wasn't really sleep-consultant approved). Our situation was complicated by the fact that we also switched to a toddler bed. I liked Eva because she looked at the whole situation of the child - his room, his diet, his exercise, etc.

Has anyone used a sleep consultant for a toddler (17 mo)? We're in sleep (actually no-sleep) hell and it is really bad for me, husband, and certainly LO who is a wreck. Last night he slept from 8pm-10:15pm, then was up 10:15-2:45am, then we had to wake him at 8 so we could get out the door.

I have not looked into a sleep consultant because I guess I feel like it's mostly just some variation of "let them cry", which I don't need to pay money to hear. That's all our pediatrician says and at this point/with the severity of our situation, it is not really helpful. I've also seen there are some supposed "gentle sleep consultants", although not sure it would work. We're CIO dropouts because LO will literally cry for hours and I can't do it. But I am not opposed to any crying at all - I realize that will likely be part of it at this point. I don't want to pay someone to tell me to do extinction CIO and let him cry for 3 hours.

If you've used one, I'd love to hear your recommendations and/or experiences (positive and negative). We are totally at the end of our rope - this is breaking us and we've got to do something. He WAS STTN so I know he can do it.
