We "sleep trained" our son just before he turned two. Basically we put our foot down and said he had to spend the night in his crib. There were A LOT of tears. Definitely not for the faint of heart. It was horrible. I actually still feel guilty about it to this day (8 months later) but he does STTN so I guess it "worked".

Our son gave up his nap before 3 as well. And frequently woke crying for no apparent reason. After he potty trained he woke to pee. So he's had night wakings for almost a year. His sleep seems to have finally normalized.

I would say it's within the range of normal. Maybe ditch the nap officially and then be firm on bedtime. No laying with him and motn do checks but not lay with him. You'll need to talk to him about it and explain it but he should understand the concept now.

Has your LO had any big transitions or changes that might have triggered the change in sleep? How do his days look? Is he eating good foods, getting plenty of outdoor time and exercise?

My 2.5 year old has had nightmarish sleep since December. Barely naps, and when he does bedtime is even more of a disaster, although it's not easy even when he doesn't nap. He "needs" us in his room until he's asleep and then cries out for us at least once in the night to do the same. We've ended up taking turns sleeping on a camping pad on his floor most nights. :/

I'm wondering about pulling the trigger on a sleep consultant but wonder if they do well with older kids I.e not infants. Any experience out there?
