@SweetiePie: Thanks for the advice. I have heard about the Merlin suit but was nervous to pull the trigger because I was not sure how much more use I could get out of it. Did you still use it once your baby could roll over, or do you have to stop it by then?

@ms.line: I just took that book out of the library! I actually really liked the recommendation and started last night trying to get N to soothe himself for the initial sleep. It took awhile yesterday, but today he actually did it - no fuss! Hopefully this is the start of better sleep. The problem is I am hesitant to try any kind of crying in the middle of the night for fear of waking his big brother (3) who is already a terrible sleeper!

@MrsB2012: Thanks! I will check it out.

@bloved: @ms.line: oh yes I should add that at 4.5 months we were definitely sleep training per my Pediatricians recommendation. We were lucky and he DID get out of the regression on his own after just 2-3 weeks, but he was still waking 1-2 times per night (5-6 hour stretches) at which point we sleep trained using 12 Hours by 12 Weeks. Obviously we were past 12 weeks but t was all still applicable.
Took a couple of weeks and he was then sleeping 11-12 hours straight per night and has been ever since (he'll be two on Friday).

My LO was an OK sleeper until 12 weeks, when she started regressing (which is common). By 4.5 months she was up 6-10 times a night, despite my best efforts. At 5 months exactly we decided to sleep train using the Happy Sleeper method, and it worked wonderfully. (We moved her to her own room at that point, too.) I decided to keep two night feeds (she's EBF) when we started training, but after a couple of weeks she dropped one of the feeds on her own. She now sleeps from 6:30-7pm to 6:30-7am with one wake up/feeding between 3-5am. Definitely check the book out! Also, regarding formula, there isn't any solid evidence that shows young babies sleep longer with formula over breastmilk, which is why you're not seeing a difference there. Good luck!

ETA: Some kids "recover" from the 4 month regression on their own and some don't. You can certainly take a wait-and-see approach. For us, we waited for over 10 weeks and found it was only getting progressively worse.

I'm so sorry, that has to be so frustrating. Being sleep deprived is one of the worst things!
So it's entirely possible that this is just a four-month sleep progression. In which case, there's not a whole lot that you can do. It's one of those wait-it-out things, but it DOES go away as quickly as it started. If it is the sleep sack that is throwing him off, the merlin magic sleep suit was a godsend. You can buy it on Amazon. It's around $40 I think, but you can start with one and if you really like it you only need two, max and just rotate them every few days or every week.
They look like they would be really warm, but they are very breathable. My son always runs very very hot, he's a sweaty little sucker. :-) But for whatever reason he was always fine in the Merlin, we just did lightweight PJs underneath.

How are naps during the day?

Good luck!

Ok I need some serious help!

Ds is 4.5 months. For the first 3 months of his life, he was a great sleeper. Almost immediately gave 3-4 hour stretches and eventually was up to a 7 hour stretch for the first part of the night.

Well, since 3 months, sleep has completely disintegrated! He is now waking every 1.5-2 hours and of course I start back to work now so I am seriously drained!

Some possible factors:
- around that time he grew out of the swaddle (his a&a blankets would wind up like inner tubes around his middle). Since then, I have tried a woombie, halo swaddles and regular sleep sacks but none seem to work. I have a Zipadee-zip on order.
- I started supplementing (and as of this week, nearly 75% of his diet) with formula. I thought formula would help with sleep though since he would be more full. I have tried several brands (including a gentle one as of this weekend) but don't notice a difference with any of them.

He still sleeps in our room in a halo bassinet.

Please please please someone help me get my good sleeper back (read in your most desperate possible voice!).
