I referenced the chart in this post a lot at the beginning, it wont fit everyone exactly but gives a good idea. We mostly went by how long he was awake in between naps to determine when the next one should be. He didn't have predictable naps until around 7 months probably. I'm sure she's doing just fine!

It sounds like you're doing great! We used the Sleep Easy Solution book. It is a sleep training book BUT there is tons of info in there about how much sleep babies should get at each age and how many/how often naps should be, etc. Info is well organized and easy to flip through. Here is a chart on average sleep needs from their website:
http://www.sleepyplanet.com/sleep_needs.html

The Weissbluth book has good info too but I found that is was not user friendly, dense and hard to get through.

Another vote for Weissbluth explaining things well - it's less about "methods" and more about explaining normal infant sleep habits.

My first had a later bedtime of like 9:30 or 10 until 12 weeks old. Then it gradually moved up to 7 or so around 4 months.

Our second had an earlier bedtime of 8 pm and a strict routine starting at 8 weeks. My older son was waking up at 7 am so a late bedtime for the infant didn't benefit me much. And his sleep was really poor so we needed SOME routine. It moved to around 7:30 at 5 months maybe? At 8 months his bed time is now 7/7:30. My kids are early risers and later bedtimes just don't work.

I loved weissbluth's book (healthy sleep happy child) for the information about developmentally appropriate baby sleep and used it as a guide! I didn't use his sleep training techniques but still refer to it as a reference for issues or if I think she needs to drop a nap. Check it out!

Sounds like
You're doing a great job! Our bedtime moved earlier around 4 months but there was no nap schedule until closer to 6-7 months. Just follow your instinct and babies lead - they know what they're doing! You'll start to see the patterns and schedules emerging naturally as she gets older.

@Coffee-lover: I think it's really what works for your family and your baby as far as any of it goes. With my first, I just let her nap whenever and she eventually settled into a rountine much later - she was around 6 months when she started napping twice a day and going to bed at a regular time. We're doing roughly the same thing with my second, except that I do try and make her sleep during my toddler's nap so thhat I can have a break. She's about 14 weeks. She sleeps around 4x a day, varying length naps. She goes to bed at 8 or 9. When she's going through a phase of not sleeping enough it is readily apparent, so I don't worry about it otherwise.

I have a bedtime routine now for our toddler, and we started it around a year. Our little one just nurses to sleep in our bed while I watch netflix. You can start a bedtime routine whenever, but I don't think you have to until it makes sense for you.

I think it really depends on your baby. My sons never followed the sleep guidelines. They generally are on the lower side of normal. At that age bedtime was about 8:30. DS1 never went to bed earlier than that. DS2 moved up to about 7:30. Naps are definitely all over the place. DS1 never had a real schedule until he went to one nap.

T is 12 weeks old and he gets about 4 naps a day, I'd say, of varying length. He goes to sleep around 8:30, and will for probably another month or two, and it will slowly move towards 7:30/7:00. I think the schedule will develop in about a month, after he's been in daycare. Right now our days are all over the place, so he gets interrupted

My wee guy is just over four months old and has really only started to develop any sort of consistent schedule in the last 2-3 weeks. At the moment he wakes at around 0700-0730, has two hours of a wake time, takes three naps and goes down for the night between 1930 and 2000.

You might find that your LO will start taking better / longer naps if she's in her room with less distractions and most babies / kids do enjoy routines so they know what comes next so there's no harm in trying to introduce or maintain some sort of consistency.

sounds good so far! 7pm seems reslly eary for that age... if you're not on a strict schedule, kind of just go with baby and you will find yourself falling into a routine as they do actually enjoy one.

I know what you mean about your pediatrician not being much help. Ours was exactly the same! I would start a bedtime routine now. Even though it may seem like it's not helping or making a difference now, if you get your LO used to a routine sooner than later, you may find that she looks forward to certain parts of the routine later on! We started our routine very early, and for a long time I felt like I was just going through the motions. But now, my LO looks forward to our routine and I really think it helps to settle him and let him know that it's time for bed.
I'm a schedule type of person, and my LO seems to do really well on a schedule, so that worked for us. But from what you're describing, your LO seems to be happy and doing well with what you're doing. So I don't know if there's really a need to change things up? But I guess if you want to try to make things more "regular," I do recall that at that age, they should be awake for about 1.5-2 hrs at a time, so that worked out to 3-4 naps a day.
Some books/sites that I found useful are: Weissbluth's book; troublesometots.com, weebedreaming.com, and Hellobee!

Around that age (or really closer to 4ms) started loosely following this schedule but not stressing over it too much:
http://noobmommy.com/2012/02/e-a-s-y-schedules-cheat-sheet-4-sample-baby-schedules-from-4-weeks-1-yr.html

Sometimes it worked, sometimes not. I started trying to make naps happen in the crib but occasionally it would still be the rock n play or on me.

We also did start doing a nap and bed routine at that age:
(Bath at bedtime) + Diaper change, sleep sack, book, dark room, white noise, put down.

We never really had to officially sleep train, it just kind of came together from there.

I think what you have now sounds pretty good though so I would definitely not worry too much! If you feel like you're both ready to do naps in the crib and do a routine then go for it. One of our big motivations was our son is BIG and we physically couldn't rock him anymore after 4 mos. or depend on him fitting in the rock n play. We needed him to fall asleep on his own!

It's all so confusing! My babies went to bed around then at that age. As they got older, their bed times moved closer to 7:30-8.

Hello,

I have questions and need advice about sleep for my almost 12 week old baby. Her pediatrician has not been helpful, I already asked him. I am a first time mom and am clueless about what I should be doing about sleep and naps.

I know I cant expect her to follow a strict schedule (sleeping at specific times) but wonder when the bedtime routine should start. I also wonder how many hours of daytime and nighttime sleep she should be getting. Is there a certain ammount of naps she should get? What does your schedule look like?

Right now she usually falls asleep for the night anywhere from 8 to 9:30. She will wake up to get fed and changed either once or twice, and will get up in the morning around 6:30.

For naps, she is all over the place. Sometimes she will take 3 long naps and seem like she sleeps most of the day, and other days she will take 2 or 3 short 30min to 1 hour naps. Her naps do not seem to have any effect on her night sleep.

For naps she is in her rock and play in the living room with me. At night she falls asleep in the rock and play in the living room and I transfer her to the bassinet in our room when we go to bed. At what point should I have her nap by herself in the room?

I see some people saying they put their baby down for bed for the night at 6:30 or 7 and have a regular nap schedule. I am womdering if im doing things all wrong. I dont want to create any bad habits.

I looked at a few books, but they all seem like they are from someone trying to convince someone of some "method" to acomplish something. I just want to make sure my daugter is healthy and getting enough sleep. Thank you for getting through this long post!
