I could see myself getting in your shoes in a few months. I dont think I could stomach cry it out with all your caveats. Especially because crying seems to make more and more congestion and your poor little one will be coughing even more and potentially gagging. I think I might try to have your husband continue trying to sooth with a pre discussed time limit between you two. It's not cry it out if someone is holding and actively comforting. Sort of like a jay Gordon type of method?

@MrsSRS: I could - but generally she'll go back to crying if she feels she didn't get long enough. And she's a decently speedy nurser (when she isn't coughing) so I'm not sure it would make a huge difference. Maybe I just need to wait it out...its just been so long since I slept through the night!!

Could you go ahead and nurse but slowly decrease the number of minutes you let her stay latched?

Help! So we never sleep trained LO (now 12 mo), we maybe did a little bit of gentle "sleep learning" and she's great about falling asleep on her own (barring when she learned to crawl and had the worst regression ever). We had gotten her down to one MOTN wake up to nurse before she started daycare in August. Part of what helped was DH would take any wake ups before 11pm and just soothe her, rather than her getting the boob, which worked well especially since I used to work evenings and sometimes not home by then anyhow. Then a few weeks in she got sick and the first few days while she was really sick (fever, etc) I went in for all wake ups so I could make sure she was staying hydrated because she really only was nursing. Now the acute part is over and she's still just a snot fountain (does this really last all winter?!) and has issues with coughing from drainage at night - but really it's mostly a problem after she wakes up and nurses because I think then she gets all the drainage going.

So - anyhow, now she's waking up 2-3 (usually 3) times per night and will not let DH soothe her (longest we've let it go is an hour of her crying with him) and all she wants is to nurse, and half the time isn't even that hungry and I think spends as much time coughing before she goes back to sleep as she did nursing when she didn't wake up coughing to begin with. I'm getting tired and never dreamed that my 12 mo old still would have never STTN!

I have a hard time being comfortable with CIO in general, let alone when she is not 100% (though I really don't feel like her wake ups are illness related but I can't rule it out because she can't tell me!) but something needs to be done. The fact that DH can't soothe her is really messing us up. She's had regressions related to things going on, like traveling where she wakes up a million times, but then getting back to her home environment she settles back. This isn't settling back.

Any advice? Do I just wait it out until she's back to normal health? Will I survive all winter with my toddler waking up like a newborn? Should I stop being a weenie and let her CIO?
