@cvbee: yes, today I put her in my bed with me and she napped for 2 and a half hours and our day was sooo much happier! I think that is more worth it to me. I will focus on just getting her to nap consistently, then worry about where it happens.

Now, to figure out how to leave her on my bed and not worry that she will roll off so I can get stuff done!

@LouLouBelle: my guy is 3 months and I say that the napping is more important than training to sleep in a crib or training to self-soothe at this point. Friends have told me that sleep 'training' doesn't matter until after 6 months.

@LouLouBelle: our nap routine involves snuggling with a lovey (LO rubs it on his face when he's tired), reading books then going in the crib...so not exactly his bedtime routine (bath, massage, bottle), but the same sequence of events for every single nap.

Here's some info about non-CIO sleep training
http://community.babycenter.com/post/a5824375/how_to_sleep_train_without_cio

I would keep trying for an earlier bedtime for at least a week.

@Magilnyc: We started putting LO in the crib at 9 weeks for all sleep. He was in his bassinet in his own room from 4 weeks on. I don't think you're behind at all :).

@LouLouBelle: we just always had the lovey around and would have it in her stroller for walks, Id make it "give her kisses" while we played, Id hang it off of her playmat so she was looking at it a lot. And when Id nurse her to sleep for naps/bedtime, Id put it on her chest so she would grab at it. Her using it to soothe just came naturally. 4 months is too young to have something in the crib, but if you can get her to sleep with it, then you can take it away after she is down for the time. I cant remember how old Liv was when we let her start sleeping with hers...I want to say maybe like 7 months? But we introduced it around 3-4 months.

@LivsMama: thanks. We have the same problem- keeping in crib to try to soothe her makes her so angry! I guess it will take patience to get her to nap in the crib.

How do you use the lovey? Isn't 4 mos too early to put something in the crib with her? And how do I make her use it to soothe?

@Sammyfab: I thought about that...but her bedtime routine iincludes a bath! Worth it to try twice a day?

I don't know what happened to cause the problems with the night sleep, so I'm not entirely sure how to fix it...we tried moving bedtime to 8 from 9. She is still waking. Maybe I will try earlier. I am wondering of weeks of just catnaps caught up with her and she is too tired to sleep well at night anymore, even though she did just STTN for so long.

I have been trying to not nurse her to sleep during the day - she's not hungry before her first nap, plus I want her to self soothe, but maybe I should start doing it since that's what we do before bed and it def works (at least until recently, anyway). I jus started reading weissbuth's book and he claims that nursing to sleep doesn't create sleep problems later.

What are other gentler sleep training methods?

Also, regarding CIO in 2 min intervals - IMO that interval is too short for true CIO. There have been nights where Ive had to let liv whimper and cry for 30 minutes before she fell asleep. The more I would go in to soothe her, the more pissed she'd get. Like I said in my last post, the only time Id go in is if she was hysterical. You know that cry.

@LouLouBelle: I would let her fall asleep on me and gently move her to her crib. I still do that now, its what works for us. It was a hard, slow process to break, and there will be days where you have to shut the door and let her cry or fuss for a bit (if you believe in that.) I was adamantly opposed to CIO, but I ended up having to do it. I never let her get to her "hysterical" cry. If it got to that, Id go in and pick her up to calm her down (leaving her in the crib and rubbing her back only made her more pissed off, so try that but do whatever works for you guys) and once she calmed Id put her back in. Those crying stints got shorter and shorter every day, and now she naps no problem in her crib. I still have to put her in on her belly, otherwise she wakes up INSTANTLY.

You might want to consider introducing a lovey if you havent. When Liv would get (and still) upset, she will pick up her loveybear and rub it on her face, then cuddle with it to sleep. That helped us a ton.

I also agree with pp about bedtime. Maybe try moving it up a bit. If she is overtired she will have a harder time staying asleep (total opposite of us adults.) Liv has a hell of a time sleeping if she goes down after 7:15 or 7:30

Can you do a mini nap routine that's similar to her bedtime routine? Are you willing to do a little sleep training to get her into her crib? There are plenty of gentler methods out there too!

Personally, I would try and fix her nights first and then maximize daytime sleep so that she isn't overtired come bedtime. After she's getting more consolidated sleep at night you can work on naps,

It does sound like she is overtired at bedtime if she is waking every half hour. Have you tried pushing bedtime up? Ideally it would be between 6-8pm and/or 2 hours after her last nap.

@LivsMama: thanks! I will check that post out. I think she will do fine getting on a nap schedule, but how do I MAKE her take naps in the crib? She just won't do it! What did you do to break the naps-while-laying-on-you habit? My apologies if it is in the old post...have not looked it up yet.

Sounds like the 4 month sleep regression. If you look at the topics Ive started, I posted a similar one like 8 months back. That was the time I started letting Liv sleep on her belly (with the Angelcare bc Im so paranoid) and when we did light sleep training. It WILL pass, I promise. I know how frustrating it is.

Also to note, Liv has consistently taken her first nap of the day 1.5 to 2 hours after she wakes up until a few weeks ago (shes 1 now.) so thats probalby ok. Id try to get into a nap schedule (I went on demand and she made her own) but make her nap in the crib. We had a hard time breaking that as she LOVED to sleep on us

Hello ladies, wanted to follow up and get some more advice, as things have gone from bad to worse.

She is going down at 8 or 830, waking up every half hour or hour until midnight, then every hour or two or three. This is CRAZY because she used to regularly sleep 9:30 to 5 or 6 without waking up!! And if she did, she would self soothe. I can not find any information about babies who seemingly forget or refuse to self soothe...she just won't do it anymore! The minute I pick her up she puts the thumb back in her mouth and goes back to sleep. But then put her in the crib and she flails about and cries. I just don't get it...she has been STTN since five weeks, self soothing since 9 weeks. I thought babies were supposed to get better at self soothing at this age, not worse?!

My biggest question is what's more important - getting her to sleep enough, or teaching her to fall asleep in her crib? We are miserable because she won't sleep in her crib during the day. She will sleep for hours laying with me. I feel like I shouldn't teach her that's okay but at the same time if she doesn't sleep, which she wont unless she's laying with me, then she is miserable. Any help??

Oh and she is clearly getting tired at 1.5 or 2 hours after waking. I do everything I can at that time to get her in her crib, where she yawns, rubs her eyes, but cries and refuses to sleep. We have done lots of variations of letting her fuss to see if that works, bu nothing helps.

Should I just first try to get her on a predictable nap schedule, then worry about making sure it is in the crib? I just don't want too teach her these bad habits now. She needs to sleep and I need the time to work!!

Sorry this is so long. DH and I have been feeling defeated. I am in tears most of the day. This is just such a different baby and I have no idea what's going on or what to do.

I agree with @mrsbee about your LO's schedule and making sure you are putting your LO down for a nap within the window of time to make sure she isn't overtired. Cat naps are really common at this age but 1 20-minute nap isn't enough.

With bedtime, have you tried moving bedtime earlier? What time is she going to bed now?

I also think 20-minute intervals is too long when she is so young. Maybe start with 5, 7, 9, etc? Listening to your LO cry is sooooo hard but some babies just need to let off steam and protest a bit to fall asleep. Hang in there mama!

they are older and much more aware at that age, and often sleep is affected. the key is preventing her from becoming overtired.

what is her schedule like? she should probably be awake a max of an hour and a half at her age.

We had troubles right at 3.5 months too- it was a very crappy week, then it passed. I pretty much just did whatever made him happy until it passed. I couldn't handle CIO, so I didn't do it, just not for me. Baby wearing was very helpful in getting him to nap for me.

The only way to find out if it is the Italian ice is to stop, see how she responds, then start up again and see what happens.

Also, I know they say to sleep them on their back, but I know that Sienna prefers sleeping on her side, and my son on his stomach. So maybe she just doesn't like being on her back? Maybe try it during a nap.

So, for the last week and a half or two weeks it seems like I have a different baby! it has been horrible! My LO was famous for her sleep....down In an instant at night, slept for 7or 8 hrs and if she woke up, we would hear her sucking her thumb to getback to sleep. Naps have always been difficult...but she was at least going downfor 30-40 min once or twice a day.

The last 1.5 weeks, something is up. She is waking up at night after being asleep for only an hour ,and often times after that takes two hrs to get to bed completely. She wont soothe herself. She has stopped napping at ALL and is thus miserable. She cries ALL daylong and is very clearly exhausted but she cannot go to sleep!

Tonight, after 2 hrs of fighting to get her down, I laid her on her belly across my legs with my hand underneath, pressing her belly, and she was asleep in an instant

So, could all this sleep stuff be the result of a persistent stomach ache? Or, I have heard about a 4 month sleep regression? She is 3.5 months...we aree going crazy!! She will not sleep but is exhausted, so she is miserable and unhappy. Would a stomach problem make laying on her back difficult?

I just don't understand how my perfect little self-soothing sleeper suddenly cannot sleep.

I know this is crazy but the only thing I can think of that I have eaten differently in the last two weeks is Italian ice, every day. The timing aligns perfectly. That can't be it, right?!

Help!? I miss my happy baby :(

ETA: she has been to the dr...there is nothing wrong with her health. The dr. Just thinks she is tired and we need to make her nap. She suggested CIO, two 20-min intervals at a time, which we did twice today and I spent the day in tears. I almost wish she had an ear infection or something so we could get mess and get relief! Ugh.
