DS hated being swaddled so we put him in a sleep sack (a long-sleeved fleece one) pretty much from the start.

Yup...went from swaddle to sleep sack before LO was rolling over. And when she learned to roll both ways we had to get rid of them bc she was roll all over her crib and kick and somehow get it unzipped.

I never took rolling ability into account when I put her in the sleepsack.

We use them and LO can't roll over yet. They make them in NB sizes so I'd assume they are safe! Their arms are still out so they can use them to roll, whereas a swaddler would seem more dangerous to me.

Yep... we used them before she could totally roll both ways.

i think it's totally safe to use sleep sacks before they can roll over. we did with charlie and olive! they are safer than swaddles.

Do you mean transitioning from a swaddler to a sleep sack? I started swaddling at birth, and transitioned to a sack when she outgrew her swaddlers. I would use either from birth, depending on what fit and what I had. I personally think you need to stop using them once they can roll well, so that they have free legs to move.

I don't really think it makes too much of a difference for sleepsacks. I worrie that my LO would have difficulty rolling from tummy to back in a sleepsack when we transitioned and he did fine. I am huge advocate for ditching the swaddle as soon as your baby can roll though!

As soon as our LO rolled over we got rid of the swaddle and threw her in a sleep sack. She will figure the rolling over thing very soon!!

Hmm! We did not take her rolling either way into account. I wonder if we should have! We just started using sleep sacks as soon as she outgrew the swaddle, because it was winter in New England and I didn't know how else to keep her warm.

Does LO need to be able to roll over both ways to be safe in a sleep sack? My LO can only roll from back to tummy, and doesn't know how to roll from tummy to back, so I'm worried that she'll get stuck on her tummy if she rolls over in the sleep sack.

Our ped also suggested to not use a sleep sack yet until she can roll both ways, but it seems like most people use the sleep sacks before LO are rolling both ways.
