@nugget16: Ahhhhh.... your little baby is ready for bed when she's ready for bed. She sounds like a sweet girl. And yes, the dental issue is for sure an issue! I had terrible teeth, as did my husband. Poor girl has a lip tie that I'm sure is already giving her gap teeth. So we know braces are in her future!! I'm expecting baby #2, also! I didn't even think about taking away the pacifier, but maybe I will consider it. Best of luck to you!! :goodluck:

@agold: hi! Thanks for the info! A later bedtime is a disaster! Lol she literally lays down on the bottom steps around 6:30 and if we keep her up last 7, it’s not pretty 🙈

As far as the paci—I have a background in dental and while I 💯 agree with pacifiers helping with possible SIDS and are a great soother, I didn’t want long term dental issues....if I can avoid it. I know that she could have had it longer (even her dentist said she could), I figured now was the better time to try taking it away. Not only am I expecting #2 but she can’t “talk” back yet and when the transition went as smooth as it did, it just reassured me it was the right time. I know that it may help her fall back asleep with early rising, but it wasn’t a guarantee and if she did, it wasn’t for more than 15-20 more min of sleep!
It’s definitely all about what works best for you and yours!!! 😊

The only thing I can think to try is maybe go to one day more in the middle of the day, and possibly a 730 bedtime. My almost 16-month old is getting about the same amount of sleep as your baby. She's mostly down to one nap. She has a 730 or even a little later bedtime because of our work schedules and such. I'm curious - why did you take away her pacifier? I still give my girl about 4 wubbas in her crib when she sleeps!! I'm always curious about parents' thoughts on pacifiers/bottles!

@gingerbebe: and yes to the language explosion causing fussiness and crap sleep. The last month has been like this for us and LO2 seems to add words and babbling daily.

I imagine your child is ready for 1 nap. My younger babe has been only taking 1 nap since he was @ 13 months and my older babe switched around 15/16 months.

Our schedule is this for our 17 month old:
5:30/6 wake
Nap 12-3 (depending on his mood it is earlier or later, but he always naps for 2.5-3 hours)
Bed by 7:30

Also be advised that like 16-18 months is notorious for a regression. Like, it lasts like a month, and leads to crap naps, hysterics at bedtime, early rising, hyper clingy velcro baby, fussing if mommy/daddy isn't in sight, etc. It usually coincides with a speech explosion. DS2 is 18.5 months and the last month has been crazy in that regard and it was tough with DS1 too. It started around 17 months slowly, but it hit its peak at 18 months and we're slowly easing out of it.

Once you move to 1 nap firmly, it will take about a month or possibly longer for that nap to lengthen out. When we first transitioned, he wouldn't sleep beyond 90 minutes and we'd have to put him to bed early. But we also enforce sleep times. So if he gets up 1 hour into nap time, we leave him in his crib until nap time is over, or at least 2 hours, whichever is more reasonable at the time. Same with mornings. We get our kids at 645am on weekdays and 730am on weekends and they just hang out in their rooms until we get them. DS2 starts whining and calling for us, but DS1 is old enough now at 3, he just chills and sings songs and waits for us to come get him. When either child has early waking phases, we use the 30 minute rule where at the very least we make them wait until we are within the 30 minute window for waking for the day. So if I want them up at 645am, I wont go bail them until 615am. Obviously, this doesn't include illness or if I can tell something is clearly wrong or if the kid needs to use the potty or something.

My 18 month old doesn't nap consistently at daycare because they put the kids down at like 1145am, and he really likes more of a 1pm naptime. During the week, his naps range from 45 minutes to 2 hours at school. On the weekends, he sleeps from 1-4pm or later. Bedtime during the week is like 7pm, during the weekend its like 730pm.

When we started the transition to 1 nap, we capped the morning nap. So if he would go down at 930am, we'd wake him at 1030am or 1015am so that he would be tired enough for a good nap in the afternoon and then be able to make it to a 730pm bedtime. DS1 has higher sleep needs than DS2, so he always slept 12 hours, but DS2 has slightly lower sleep needs and usually only wants to sleep 11 hours at night, so getting him to a 730pm bedtime was key so that he would sleep until 630am.

@SweetiePie: I agree with you! My only concern was the chances of her actually falling back asleep or resting quietly if she woke up early we’re very drastic in comparison. I would say only about 25% of the time once we gave her the Passy back when she actually go back to sleep and if she did it wouldn’t be for very long at all. The time change did a number on her as far as wanting to wake up early in the morning but it doesn’t help in the evenings when she didn’t want to go to bed a little bit later. I really appreciate all your feedback! We’re going to give it this next month and let her kind of leave the schedule and then come January when she’s 18 months old really get strict with one good nap a day. I really appreciate your kindness and feedback!

Oh and here was our schedule at 17 months MOST days.

7am wakeup
7:30 breakfast
9:30 snack
11 small lunch/hearty snack
11:30/12 nap - 1:30/2pm
2pm snack
5pm dinner
5:30 bath and routine
6-ish bedtime

As he got older we pushed nap later to a more reasonable 12/12:30 and that made the rest of the day fall into place nicely.

You do have a lot of factors here so it’s hard to know which one (or more) need to be adjusted so I would take them one at a time. Like a science experiment, change/test one variable at a time.

1) we just took away my 3yo bedtime paci right after he turned 3. It did mean about a month of earlier wakeup. Same as your theory, I think he always woke around an hour earlier but found his paci and would go back to sleep. Without it he was just up. But it did end and now he’s back to his normal 7am wakeup even without paci. So if you just took it away, I would first give that a few more weeks to see if it improves over time.

2) could be the time change, but same as above...that’s one you kind of have to wait until she’s adjusted.

3) it’s possible she is ready for one nap. Usually the latest is 18 months. Mine was teetering between 1 and 2 naps from about 16-18 months. It was brutal. But often times an early morning wakeup can be a sign that they are getting too much daytime sleep so they end up not needing as much overnight. Mine also took his 2 naps (esp morning) pretty easily. But he started waking early and even waking once at night after over a year of consistent 7-7 sleep (also around 18 month regression so could have been that).

So my advice would be to wait a couple more weeks to see if the paci and time change work themselves out. And if she’s still waking early she’ll be 18 months anyway and that’s a good time to switch to 1 nap. She’s doing it at school already and I know it SUCKS to consider doing it at home. But in many ways 1 nap with an early bedtime was really great for us. If you go this route or have questions about it now I’m happy to help.

I agree - drop down to one nap. The fact that she’s falling asleep fairly quickly doesn’t necessarily mean she needs a nap - if I lie on a bed in a dark room I’ll peobably fall asleep too.

My first guess is that she has too much overall sleep and not enough wake time. I would bet dropping to one nap will do the trick.

I’m just looking for reassurance and possible suggestions!

Last weekend, we took my 17 month old paci away cold turkey! For the most part, the transition went smoothly! She only got it at nap and bed times to begin with. However, ever since then (well possibly ever since the time change) she’s been waking early from naps/and in the morning. When she had the paci, we would give it to her when she woke early and it would often help her fall back asleep.

She has “two” schedules...it depends on if she has pre-school it not (I teach and she gets to go as well). What I’m finding is that no matter what schedule she is on, her amount of sleeping hours tends to always stay between 12-14 hours out of 24.
She’s a happy girl most of the time (we have entered some tantruming but nothing terrible) and she is definitely an early to bedtime child.
Thoughts??? Here are her 2 schedules:

Schedule without pre-school:
5:00-awake, typically plays in crib until 5:45 (we have a hope she may go back to sleep bc she isn’t fussing but it has only happened a few times and for only another 15-20 min)
5:45-6:30 (unless we discover a dirty diaper which has been happening a lot!!!) we let her watch nursery rhyme video on tablet (not ideal but I need time to get going for the day 🙈 )
6:30-up for day
9:00-10:15ish- morning nap
2:00-3:15ish afternoon nap (I think she could stay up longer here and try for a later bedtime????)
6:30-bath
6:45/7-in bed for night

Schedule with preschool:
Everything in the morning is the same until morning nap
9:00-12:30-preschool
1:00-2:30 (she very rarely will take a longer nap even if she misses her morning nap)
6:15 bath time
6:45 bedtime

Because she will fall asleep within 15 min (at the most) at all naps, I feel she still needs them (especially 2 when she can).

She does sleep all night with the occasional outcry but it lasts 20 seconds and will usually just roll over and go back to sleep.

Thanks all!!
