@MrsStormy: Her naps didn't start getting longer until we taught her to fall asleep on her own (which involved CIO). I tried forcing them to be longer but she would get so upset, so I accepted the 38 minute nap, and as she got used to falling asleep on her own, the naps started getting longer naturally, after 4 months. She will still take a 38 minute nap sometimes, but it's becoming the exception, not that norm. And sometimes she will wake up, yell, roll around for a few minutes, and go back to sleep.

@MrsStormy: our naps didn't consolidate until 5 months ish. I could leave him in his crib till the cows came home and he would happily roll around, but not fall back asleep. Nothing worked/mattered. Not helpful, I know!

@Modern Daisy: This is our situation exactly, short naps that she fights, but pretty great night sleep. Of course she just started those few longer naps right before starting with the nanny, so I'm sure it would be asking to much for those to continue with her, and I'm not sure how to explain to the nanny how we extended the naps (it wasn't always easy).

@Foodnerd81: I think yours is the schedule/ routine that ours will end up looking like, if she can figure out how to take a little longer nap! Her morning nap isn't that close to when she wakes up though (its probably 2 hours after she wakes), I mostly just watch for her tired cues, but maybe I should try closer to her wake up time.

@Modern Daisy: C's naps at 12 weeks were awful. And she has pretty much never been one to just fall asleep on her own, I have always had to actually put her to sleep-- at 12 weeks that meant swaddle, dark room, white noise, then nurse to sleep. If I was lucky she'd fall asleep nursing while I was watching TV at least.

I'm realizing this is why gonig back to work at only 12 weeks is too early, because now I have no control over daytime sleep and when I get home from work DS usually falls asleep in my arms!

He sleeps great at night (thank goodness) but fights naps during the day. He will only take short 20-30 minute naps and loses it if we try to put him in his crib. Our nanny thinks he's teething, but I really need to work with her on getting him to nap. I think she just kind of lets him do whatever and doesn't try to put him down.

Oh, and the thing I have trouble with right now is the end of the day and naps-- sometimes she wakes up from her last nap with too much time before bedtime, but not enough time for another nap-- like if she wakes up at 4, that's 3+ hours until her usual bedtime, but she wouldn't be ready for a nap until almost 6 which is too close to bed... still haven't figured out the best way to handle that.

3.5 months is when C's sleep started to really turn around and a schedule of sorts kind of evolved. Before that.... it was not good. And I've said maybe I wish I didn't nurse to sleep in the beginning, but I truly do not know what else I would have differently, so I probably will do the same with #2 if I can.

That said, at 3.5 months and pretty much until now, at 5 months, our schedule is roughly:
7:30-8:30-- wake up, nurse
1 hour after wake up, nap (that means she pretty much gets up, change diaper, eat, snuggle for a few minutes, back down). First nap is usually 1-2 hours long.
After that, it's pretty much a cycle of wake up, eat, nap, with her wake times being around 1.5 hours, sometimes more or less depending how long the naps were. Most days it's 2-3 naps, of about 4 hours total combined.
Bedtime is between 7 and 8, depending what time she woke up from the last nap. She still wakes up at least once most nights, usually more.

We have only recently been doing the eat part at the beginning of the wake cycle, before that, I agree with you, I felt like she was waking up because she was hungry.

We also did sleep training for falling asleep, at 3.5 months for bedtime, and 4 months for nap time. Nursing to sleep stopped working before that so we didn't have a lot of options.

So I've noticed a lot of people say in posts that they wish they had started sleep schedules or routines with their babies sooner and they wish they didn't nurse to sleep. So help me learn from your experience! What are your sleep/nap schedules and routines? How do your babies go to sleep? How did you determine what worked best for you?

My LO is 3.5 months and we don't have much of a schedule right now, I was trying to do EASY but her naps were crap so we decided to try something else (they are still crap but MAYBE a little better than they were). We have been doing more of an active eat sleep routine because we thought she might have been waking up from hunger. Her naps are normally 20-30 minutes, but she had 4 days in a row recently where she took at least one 1.5-2.5 hour nap, it was AMAZING!
