I started with just bedtime at 5mo. LO is 6.5mo and still haven’t started naps... with bedtime from the 17 day point and on, he goes down without crying. I did things a little differently bc we co sleep but it works for me so it depends what you’re comfortable with. I did attended CIO and laid with him. Pat his back once in a while, etc.

Also, it could just be the timing at which you're attempting this. 6 months is when separation anxiety kicks in and it creates a lot of fussing and crying when you leave your child (like babysitters or daycare) and sleep times.

https://www.babysleepsite.com/sleep-training/baby-toddler-sleep-separation-anxiety/

My 18 month old just went through this (there's another regression in the 16-18 month phase) and he literally was a velcro baby all day and screamed for every nap and at bedtime and slept terribly for a solid month even though he'd been sleeptrained since infancy and was used to daycare and Sunday School. So it may be a rougher ride for you because of where he is developmentally.

This doesn't mean I think you should stop - consistency is key - and my 18 month old went right back to sleeping great and going to daycare happily when the phase was over.

@cake2017: Every baby is different but for my son he definitely could not have done that much Wake time between last nap and bedtime. Or 2 hours between 1st and 2nd nap.
They do say that rubbing eyes might be too late so I would try to beat that happening and stick strictly to 1.5 hours of wake time and see where that takes you. Adjust as needed. My son at 6 months definitely could not do more than 1.5 hours.
Some babies do just need to let off some steam before sleep but 45-1hr of full on crying could be overtired and wired. Especially if you’ve truly been doing extinction CIO for a couple of weeks (like REALLY never caving and going in before hes asleep).
And fwiw, I personally would not try nap training until night time was solid. It’s pretty commonly though that Bed/nighttime is the basis for all good sleep and once that’s down he will follow suit with naps with less struggle. And it’s a lot easier for you to focus on just night then just naps. It probably feels pretty frustrating for you to hear all that crying in one 24 hour period.

@SweetiePie: Wake time and first nap is no more than 1.5.

Second nap he’s usually awake for about the same and then he will start rubbing eyes etc so that’s about 1.5-2hr wake time.

His third nap is usually for 45 mins to 1 hour and I have been trying to get it to 2.5-3 hrs before bedtime.... should I close that gap?

@gotkimchi: Okay that’s good to hear cause he does at least one nap in his crib. It’s always the first one.

He sleeps at night too but just cries when I put him down still... it’s been almost 2 weeks!

@cake2017: the drive to sleep is strongest for the first nap of the day so the nap part sounds normal. I was always happy with one nap in the crib and then in the afternoon I would hold the baby and nap too.

Do you think it will get better?!

Naps I don’t let him cry longer than 30mins because he eats every 2.5 hours. His first nap of the day is after an hour to 1.5 wake time and he goes right down with no crying to a whine...

I would separate nursing from bedtime by 20 min, that will prob help. Even if you think he’s “awake” he probably still has the nursing to sleep association.

@ineebee: I did ferber... that upset him so I do CIO without a check until he falls asleep. He cries for 45 mins to no more than 1 hour. only when i put him down. through out the night he will cry for 10-30 mins and go back. When i feed him he will go right back without crying.

@ineebee: Yes, I’ve been consistent. Not as much with naps but bedtime yes. He is 6 months old. The main goal was to get him use to the crib and his own room which I think I have done. I just don’t want him to cry anymore when i put him down.

What method are you using? Are you being absolutely 100% consistent with it? Also, how old is he? My favorite sleep learning/training resource was the book Bedtiming, which outlines general developmental phases that are best and worst for sleep training.

How long is this going to take to see a change?!

I am doing both naps and nights. He still fights his crib at night. He knows how to fall back to sleep but will cry and then go back. It’s sometimes longer than what I thought this would take.....

We have a strict bedtime routine. He is down at 7pm. The first nap he goes down without a problem. The other 2 naps he wants to be held /nurse and will cry. I still nurse him twice at night because I want to. I also nurse right before he goes down/burp and that gets him “drowsy but awake”... the moment we walk to the crib he’s up!!!!

I don’t know when the sleep teaching will be over....????

How much longer of this! :/
