@cake2017: Ha, this thread is so old. We did try and (just like with LO1), it was a huge fail at 4.5 months. It does work for some kiddos, but I guess my kids just needed to be older for sleep training to work. One thing I've learned is that my two kids are really different sleepers, so YMMV and it is worth trying. Also, if it doesn't work right away, don't be afraid to wait a month and try again. I feel like so many people try sleep training too early, then give up and then I hear about how their 2 year old still wakes in the night. For LO1, it didn't work until our 2nd attempt and actually for LO2, it didn't really stick until our 3rd attempt (he was past 6 months by then).

We swaddle weaned and transitioned to the crib before attempting any sleep training. I'd probably try to knock out any big changes before you go through the pain of sleep training so that you don't need to do it again after making those changes.

@catlady: I swear my kids protested mommy going back to work. Both of them came home from the hospital as beautiful newborn sleepers, but then a 4 months when I went back to work they said 'screw this I'm going to demand to nurse every 90 minutes alllll niiiighhttt long". Oh well, we all survived in the end :silly:

I would probably get him used to the sleep sack for a while and then consider moving forward with sleep training. I think taking away the swaddle and sleep training at the same time might be too much at once for a little guy.

@Truth Bombs: No, he doesn't seem to be close to rolling actually. We've tried at various times to get him out of the swaddle and he always ends up waking himself up so we keep going back to it. But I agree, we definitely need to get him out of it soon. I was planning to put him in a sleep sack for sleep training since that's what we did with LO1 and it worked well.

What you went through sounds so hard!

At almost 5 months I assume he can roll or is at least close to rolling? If so, he should be swaddle weaned ASAP and I would take care of that first before sleep training. I also think when swaddled he can't really self soothe if he can't move around, access his hands, etc, so sleep training would probably be really hard on him. Plus, you'd likely have to do it all over again once you unswaddled him.

My kids both turned into bad sleepers when the 4 month regression hit and I swear they just never came out of it. I basically was a zombie for a long time. My older one finally started sleeping through the night at 16 months shortly after she weaned without any sleep training. My younger one we sleep trained at 14 months before I went away for 4 days and we used it as a opportunity to wean as well. I wasn't comfortable letting either of them cry it out earlier than that.

@Dahlia: Yeah, you are right. I am leaning towards it. Just need to make sure DH is on board.

I would start tonight if you're ready. They're always going through something - growth spurt, development leap, teething.

Looking for some advice. LO2 (almost 5 months) has very inconsistent sleep and it's been that way for about 2 months now. Sometimes he does great (falls asleep on his own, only wakes 1-2 times), sometimes not so much (up every 1-3 hrs, needs rocking or nursing to get back to sleep). We haven't sleep trained him yet because he's still in a swaddle and sleeping in a bassinet in our room, and I wasn't quite ready to move him to his nursery downstairs. But the past few nights have been awful so DH and I are trying to decide if we should sleep train him tonight.

The only thing is, his sleep has gotten very weird so we're not sure what's going on. 2 out of the past 3 nights, he's had a really hard time going back to sleep after waking, and last night in particular, he had several stretches of over an hour where he just wanted to hang out and chat (but if you put him in the bassinet, he'd cry). I thought we'd already been through the 4 month regression, but maybe not? Previously, even if he was up every 2 hrs, it was at least not too hard to get him to fall back asleep.

DH is worried that if we try to sleep train while he's going through something developmental, it will backfire. I sort of agree but am also exhausted. What would you ladies do? I'm torn between just going for it tonight or giving him another day or two to sort it out.

FWIW, we sleep trained LO1 at 5.5 months and it worked great, but her sleep was very consistently bad so it was a no brainer. LO2's sleep is confusing to me.
