We switched from a pack'n'play to a floor bed at 20 ish months. For 5 months he wouldn't get out of "bed" until we came in his room. So, we didn't have to re-sleep train because of switching beds. We did have to re-sleep train when baby brother came and he starting coming out of his room at 5 am.

Two different experiences with my DDs! Both switched between 2-2.5y and both were good sleepers when we switched (into bed awake, rarely waking up MOTN, wake for Day around 7). . DD1 had no issues -- she actually didn't ever get out of her bed by herself until she was 3. Even in the mornings. DD2 immediately started getting out of her bed at bedtime, middle of the night, and in the early morning.

I think it's personality driven. DD1 is more of a rule follower and DD2 is my button-pushing rule breaker.

False. My second didn't make a peep at night after 14 months. Down in crib wide awake at night and didn't hear from him til morning. Switched him to a bed at 28 months and all hell broke loose.

I think a lot of kids are transferred around 2 years old and that is the age where you get a lot of schnanegans related to them testing boundaries at bedtime. I took the rail of my kid's crib at 3 years old and didn't have any problem whatsoever.

Totally depends on the kid. I know some kids who had no issues, and others like mine for whom it was very difficult.

We transitioned both kids around age 2 1/2 to their "big kid beds". My crappy sleeper actually slept a lot better after the switch and my good sleeper a week into the switch is sleeping exactly the same as before. Neither required re-training of any sort.

We got a Privacy Pop tent and put a twin mattress in it like a floor bed. We put it in there for a day or two to play in (he had a play tent to begin with so similar concept) and put lots of plush and soft pillows and blankets and stuffies in there. He napped in it fine, cried for 10 minutes at bedtime the first two nights, and then that was it. He loved his crib but was climbing out and this gave him the same criblike enclosed feeling. I had a canopy bed as a kid I loved the cozyness of it so maybe he's the same way? We did have to lock him in for a bit after he figured out how to unzip himself but now he just waits until we get him in the morning. We transitioned at 27 months.

I read somewhere that two year olds have ZERO impulse control and that's why transitioning them to a bed at around this age can be such a disaster- they literally can't stop themselves from climbing out of bed!

For my big girl we started having her nap on a twin bed in her room but she always associated her big bed with sleep because that's where we nursed and read stories before bed (we also bedshared in the bed when we needed to) and one day she just decided she was ready to make the transition.

To be fair, my big girl was a very compliant toddler but I am a firm believer in not pushing kids to do something before they're ready.

No trouble for us either, but we waited until after 2 and put her straight in a twin bed. I told her she couldn't get out alone. We also went through a period of her wanting us to sit with her but I'd say I'll sit for 2 minutes and that was fine

We transitioned at 26 months with not problem. We transitioned him in advance of LO2 being born, and moved to a new room at the same time. We went straight to a real bed, and he actually started sleeping better, I think because the bed was softer than the crib. We did lock him in the room, although at 3.5 he can break out if determined. He still rarely gets out of bed until we get him, and didn't at all for close to a year.

@JLC53: maybe, maybe not. We had zero night issues from the switch at 2.5. She did drop her day nap around then but she also knew how to climb out of a crib and would have done the same in a crib.

@LBee: I'm with you, we had zero issues transitioning to a toddler bed. It was so easy that we were shocked and kept waiting for a delayed reaction that never happened.

We had no trouble at all and her sleep stayed exactly the same. That said, I made very careful decisions about it. We waited as long as we could to make the switch (basically until she was ready to potty train around age 2.5). We kept her in the same bed (just switched from crib to toddler rail) and kept everything else about bedtime exactly the same. And when LO2 was born, I bought him a new crib instead of making LO1 vacate hers. She's 3.5 now and still sleeps in the same bed and she sleeps great.

We did put a childproof knob cover on the door because I was convinced she'd be climbing out of bed and getting into trouble around the house but somehow we lucked out because we have never had issues with that. She sometimes gets out of bed in the morning to play but she always stays in at night.

@JLC53: My oldest didn't have any trouble when we first switched her to a bed (we moved her to a Queen bed with bedrails).....but then about 6 months later, she started having trouble going to sleep by herself. We did have a period where we laid with her till she fell asleep and then we slowly weaned her from that. But we didn't have to do any sleep training that involved screaming/crying.

@LBee: That's great. I kind of freaked out when we were facing this transition, so I did about a million internet searches and read all the forum threads I could find, and put up my own FB post polling everyone I knew, and the overwhelming consensus was it's a major challenge. I don't know anyone who got through it easily. The info I received was a lot of people who had to redo sleep training, plus a lot of people who couldn't bring themselves to do it and ended up having to sit with their kids or kids who walk out of the room and come into the parents' room.

@PawPrints: This has not been my experience or anyone I know. I wouldn't think she should just expect to have to retrain.

We transitioned at 2.5 years old. Sleep has been exactly the same. He was sleep trained at 4 months, but we even switched up his routine (books + prayers in bed not in his rocking chair, ditched songs) with the new bed. He was older and we were able to say that if he got out of his bed before his clock turned green that we would put a lock on his door.

Also - definitely put it off as long as you can, no need to make the transition before LO starts climbing out of the crib. You may have a long time yet. I hear it's easier when the kid is older. Mine was just shy of two years old.

You have to redo sleep training when you make the crib-to-bed transition. It's exactly the same as before. It's just as awful as it was the first time, but fortunately just as quick. Make sure LO can't escape the room - we used a childproof doorknob cover, lots of people use a gate. We had a rough few days with crying/screaming at bedtime but she snapped into the new routine after a few days. Then it was back to normal - putting herself to sleep just fine.

I sleep trained my almost 16 month old around 8-9 months old. I will never say my LO is sleep trained, but it has been a while (7-8 months) since I have been having to rock my LO to sleep or help get back to sleep in the middle of the night. It truly has been bliss!!!

Anyway, a friend of mine said it will end when I switch to a toddler bed? I don't plan on switching anytime soon, but why would that happen? This friend had a pretty good sleeping baby, would put herself to sleep, take great naps, etc...but as soon as the switched to a toddler bed they have been having problems. Now has to sit in room until LO falls asleep. Gets up in the middle of the night and goes to mom and dad's bed etc...

Is that everyone's experience??? Is this the norm when switching to toddler bed.... If so, I am not looking forward to this... The crying from sleep training still haunts me...
