I came back to look at this thread and didn’t realize it was only 5 weeks ago we did this. I’ve been getting much better sleep. We had a bit of a set back going away for 12 days and all sharing a room but after a few nights home he was back in track.

He has now decided 5:30 is his bedtime. The last two nights he’s had a big dinner of purées, nursed a bit and gone to bed fully awake without a peep. He’s also been nursing less at his 2 wake ups and his first stretch is longer. I don’t want to jinx it but I hope we are on the road to sttn.

@bhbee: Thanks! I’m sure there may be worse nights and better nights but at least we have a plan for the bad nights.

Thanks everyone for the tips and advice.

@bhbee: it is definitely improving. I know it will take time. But only two wake ups to nurse is way better than every couple hours. We are traveling in two weeks, so hopefully he can do good as myself and baby and my 6 year old will be sharing a room!

@ALV91711: that sounds promising! I’ve found it takes time to get the little wakeups lessened (for us at least) so I hope it continues to improve as he learns to self soothe better.

We started last night and it wasn’t too horrible. We picked 9:30 & 1:30 as fessing times and 5:30 for wake up. He goes to bed at 6.

He went to bed fine and the first time he woke was 9:30. This was nice since the last few nights he’s been waking earlier. He nursed and went back down. Then woke at 12. It took about 40 min and a few checks. Next was 2:30 so I nursed him. Then 4:30 and we must have both fallen asleep fast, the next thing I know is hearing him again and I looked at the clock to see how long he’d been crying when I reused been sleeping and it was 5:45. I hope tonight will be as good.

My other concern has been him waking DS1 since their rooms are right next to each other. He seems to have slept through it all and isn’t up yet. He is usually up around 6.

@periwinklebee: That is good that you were able to drop the night readings Ike that. Early wake ups are terrible. Glad he went back to a regular time. I remember when DS1 has about a month of 4:30 wake ups around 1.5 years. It was terrible.

@ALV91711: Initially we were cosleeping and I think he was pretty much just eating all night long. The first step was to start making him go back in his crib after feeding. Then, over a period of several weeks I just tried to cut him off the boob sooner and sooner. I didn't use a watch or anything, though. I think by that point I was just over the night feedings and hence was just trying to cut him off as soon as I possibly could. Then finally he just dropped the night wakings all together (though this wasn't quite as good as it sounds, as this was followed by about six weeks of 4:45 - 5:15 waking for the day that CIO would not fix, I think his system just needed time to adjust....) He was around 11 months when I started to night wean him, I'm not sure whether there would have been more crying if we'd done it younger or not...

@periwinklebee: did he usually nurse for the same amount of time at night feedings? I’m just wondering because I don’t really pay attention to how long, I’m just too tired!

@LCTBQE: middle of the night poops are the worst! Glad to know the sleep training made things better. I know we did sleep training with DS1 but he’s 6 now so it was a long time ago and the details of what we did are foggy.

@ALV91711: you’ve gotten great advice above but just wanted to say you can do it! 4x a night was my 6-month-old’s preference and it is excruciating. We sleep trained a month ago and it’s gotten better. Not puke, but FWIW, my girl has been pooping like crazy lately—she poops every single night in the middle of the night and wakes up howling. My husband goes in and changes her and puts her back down with minimal fuss like @annem1990: said, and she is surpringly amenable to it, she just goes back down. I think if i was there she’d be angry to not be fed, but daddy=easy. Good luck :) !

We had good luck with gradual night weaning, I just slowly cut back time on the boob, and he ultimately gave it up with minimal crying. Nothing very scientific about it... but I know others who are much more precise about switching to bottles and gradually cutting ounces...

@bhbee: I do have DH on board to do a big chunk of this we just agreed to come up with a plan before we start. I’m hoping I can get him to start tonight. I hope we ca get down to 1-2 wakings. We are traveling at the end of the month so after we are back and he is eating more food I’ll worry about those last wake ups.

@kiddosc: Thank you. That is good advice. It is good to know that you could still sleep train with picking up to soothe if necessary. I’d like to avoid him getting worked up to the point of puking.

I’m excited and nervous for this. But I desperately need more sleep.

@ALV91711: I had a puker too. We did sort of a CIO with checks and pick-up/put-down to sleep train so that she was never so riled up that she puked. It takes longer than extinction CIO, but worked better in our situation. We did Ferber with checks at certain minute intervals and would try to soothe her without picking her up, but would pickup if necessary. Then I picked two times through the night that I would feed and would only feed her if she woke up after that time... like not until after midnight and after 4 am.

@ALV91711: when she took the 12oz it basically covered (I think) two evening kind of cluster feedings, and then her first wakeup (had I only been nursing) so I got 7 hours from bedtime to feeding without much crying. I need to push it to get more hours but I’m about to travel and figure solids will help so may wait a bit.

For your sleep’s sake I might try to do a big dream feed (7-8oz) at the 9:30 for now and see if you can tank up and get him to sleep through a feeding ... or at least be able to go back down with just paci or whatever (I’d have dh do that if you can). I hope you can get a good chunk of sleep soon!!!

@bhbee: holy smokes that is a lot! Yes, I had been thinking 1-2 feedings for the next couple months would be manageable.

He goes to bed at 6. Usually his first wake up was 9:30 but the last few days he’s been waking earlier. So, I’m thinking of 9:30 and then maybe 2 would be reasonable.

@ALV91711: hmm in that case i don’t know if this will help but another thought I had was that if you can get it down to even 1-2 feedings now, you may be able to do better in a couple months when solids are helping hold food down, but I’m guessing that only helps with reflux.

I’ve been amazed at what she will take in the tank up. I never thought she was hungry at bedtime, but she will take way more in a bottle than I think she was getting nursing. Last night she took 12 oz in the 2 hours before bed!

@bhbee: not reflux. He throws up in his crib frequently. Mostly at nap time if he’s upset, he rolls to his tummy to sleep which doesn’t help. He goes to bed early already but trying to rank him up is a good idea.

@annem1990: That is not fun! I will definitely make sure we are ready for a middle of the night change.

@Ms. RV: I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of this, I did this with DS1. I don’t remember how well it worked.

Not the exact same situation, but my one year old has always been a puker. He's been sleep trained for a year and typically goes down very easily or just chats in his bed for awhile if he's not tired.

But, we travel a lot and that always starts badly. He often pukes the first night because he cries so hard. We keep the same routine, same travel crib, etc. but it's almost like he has to be "retrained" that first night. I obviously do my normal checks (is he wet, hot, cold, etc.) Once I determine that he's just mad we're not coming to him, I let him CIO. I always put towels around/under the crib and have a change of PJs immediately ready. When the puking happens, I try to turn as few lights on as possible, don't talk and silently clean it up. Usually DH is there too so we tag-team. After that first puke he usually goes right down and is fine the rest of the trip.

So I guess my opinion? You might just have to get through the puking. He will realize he doesn't like puking and it won't get him what he wants. I would never leave him to sleep in it, but make as little of a deal of it as possible and go right back to bed.

Is the issue reflux based? Does he spit up at night now or you’re just thinking the crying will do it?

One thing I’ve thought about a lot from my recent sleep training post is setting them up for success. Good advice Ive gotten is things like trying earlier bedtime, doing a big tank up bottle, etc. I think those type of things have the potential to help and/or make the crying less. I also got one of those incline positioners for under the crib sheet to try to minimize tummy upset, who knows if it is actually helping but maybe. So maybe I’d try some of those things and see if they help CIO be less painful. I am SO not an expert on sleep but those things have helped me now or in the past! The tank up pumped bottle got us to mostly one feeding without really CIO, it was amazing.

@Ms. RV: I hadn’t thought of that. But we do need to get it down to 1-2 nursing sessions, I’d be ok with that. 4 times a night is just too much.

Have you considered just gradually making each nurse session shorter? I.e. each night it is a minute shorter
