@LBee: I can relate, that is my son as well. He literally sleeps with his arms curled around mine.

We used a glo-worm when my son was about 11 months, when we were able to sleep train him the first time, he could turn it on and off himself and it seemed to help him. But when he got older, it didn't work.

@macintosh: Ugh! I hope we both find a solution.

@looch: He can fall asleep in his bed no problem, it's these wake-ups. A part of me says that middle of the night cosleeping doesn't seem so bad, but he's a bed hog and practically wants to wear your skin while you sleep.

@LBee: I was not successful in sleep training my 2 year old (and he was literally 24 months at the time). CIO didn't work, he would throw HIMSELF out of the crib, so we basically just started cosleeping because I was out of ideas.

@LBee: Ugh that suuucks. My DS does pretty well with his loveys (wubbanub) and his Twilight turtle. His new routine is to throw the turtle out of the crib most nights before falling asleep. One night recently I had to let him cry it out because he won't be rocked and he would not stop crying and throwing his loveys out of the crib. He cried over an hour and when he woke in the morning I found out that he had thrown up in his crib, yikes! It's so tough, but I CIO isn't as hard for me now than when he was little. I hope you find a solution.

@runnerd: Right there with ya, friend. The kid has a will of steel. He's breaking me slowly. He threw his lovey out of the crib on purpose this morning because he knew we would come in and rescue him.

I don't know if this will work, but we started putting one of those crib soother aquarium things in my son's crib around 11 or 12 months, and he's recently (at 15 months) figured out how to turn the music and night light on when he wakes up in the middle of the night. A few nights ago, I woke up at 2 am and heard him crying, so I switched on the baby monitor video and watched him stand up and hit the switch to turn on the lights and music. He immediately stopped crying, laid back down and went back to sleep. I was worried that lights and music would keep him awake but I guess it actually helps him soothe himself to sleep.

@LBee: i think you're on the right track of soothing him and putting him back down in his crib. he will eventually get the picture that he won't be coming into bed with you. maybe the next step could be going in there and singing a song or saying something to soothe him without picking him up. fingers crossed that he learns to soothe himself back to sleep soon!!

@edelweiss: Ugh, night wakings. I feel like he might be too old for CIO, but last night he was up FOUR TIMES. It's like he's suddenly unable to self soothe - he wakes up and cries for us right away. We go in there, rock him, and he's back asleep and goes into his crib two minutes later.

ETA: This has been going on for about 4 months and he's 23 months. We were in the midst of a lot of life changes so we had gotten in the habit of putting him into our bed when he woke-up.

are you talking about night wakings or falling asleep? we had some sleep regressions when LO was around 2, in that he was crying and running after us when we would leave the room. at first, what worked was a combo of continually putting him back in bed without talking to him/eye contact/engaging and some CIO. when another regression hit, what worked was taking longer with the bedtime routine--we added a "let's talk about your day" and some extra songs. none of these were magic solutions, there were weeks of stress and painful bedtimes.

Has anyone sleep trained (or re sleep trained) a toddler?

Experience? What was your method and did you have success? If so, how long did it take?

Mama needs some sleep.
