Thank you for all the feedback! We totally lucked out last night. LO went down at 8:30 (awake, without rocking to sleep) and slept until 5:30. I'm pretty sure I'm jinxing myself but if she did this every night we'd be golden!

we didn't sleep train so it's not experienced advice, but from what i have noticed from our trip away last wknd is that sleep is thrown off for ANY baby (even good sleepers) when away. so training before might be fruitless!

I'll be honest and say I'm not a fan of CIO or "sleep training" that involves leaving baby to cry so won't weigh in on when the best time to do it is but if it goes against your instincts and distresses you to hear her cry then don't feel like you have to continue with it!

At the end of the day sleep is just another milestone that all babies master at different ages and some babies just don't respond well to CIO so go with your gut!

It was still very hard hearing her cry :( 45 minutes of crying the first night when we put her down to sleep and then it just gradually got less and less. By night 4 or 5 there was significant improvement. I still kept 1 night feed tho. Although now it's more like 1-2! We didn't have roaring success with sleep training lol, so take my advice with a grain of salt

@NovBaby1112: how many nights did it take you? Staying in the room sounds like a nice way to do it (but very difficult I'm sure!).

I would wait until after your trip like others have said. I personally did night first because naps were not bad. It depends which one you want the most improvement from. Lots of people do them both together, but I know at least for me (I'm a total softie too!) I could never do both at the same time and hear crying day AND night. Too much for me! I stayed in the room with LO until she fell asleep at night, she still cried pretty badly, but I felt better about st least being in there with her.

I think you should wait until after your trip and then do it yourself. It will suck hearing the crying, but improvement tends to happen quickly so you will be encouraged to continue. whatever you do, consistency is key.

@hilsy85: @sorrycharlie: there is something to be said for having more energy in the daytime to tackle sleep training rather than being like a zombie at night!

@hilsy85: @RubyCali: we did the same, naps first - it felt easier to tackle because it wasn't going into a 12 hour marathon type thing, haha. I started putting her down drowsy, then eventually i could put her down awake. if she got mad i sat in there and did "shhh, shhh, shhh" from the chair and that was "white noise-ish" for her to conk right out. she never really freaked though..she reserves that for nighttime, lol.

@RubyCali: we actually started with night time AND naps at 5 months...night time was a disaster so we scrapped it but he literally would.not.nap so we had to do something. . I couldn't handle doing CIO for naps so I stayed in the room with him and soothed him from a chair next to him and it took a few days, but he was able to put himself to sleep.

@sorrycharlie: I totally get what you are saying. I don't want to have to sleep train, but I'm also not okay with going in all the time to soothe her back down to sleep. She has found her thumb recently though, which I think is turning into a very good thing!

@hilsy85: interesting! Why did you choose naps first?

Personally, I would wait til after your vacation...1 week is probably long enough to see improvement, but I don't think it's long enough to withstand the transition of going on vacation, if that makes sense.

As for naps and night time, that's up to you. We did it backwards--we did naps first, and then night time. But I think most people do nights first, because naps are usually harder.

I am probably going to be an unpopular opinion, but I don't think you have to sleep train if you are uncomfortable with it!

I didn't "train" dd, but I started by doing naps in her crib, then at night she easily transitioned in from our bed (in a co sleeper). she doesn't sttn at 9 months yet, but i'm convinced that's more luck than anything we "did" because she STTN until 3 months, then got sick and that was that.

DD's pediatrician told us that it's time to start sleep training (waah!) now that she's 4+ months old. She's a pretty good sleeper for the most part, but we often have to play the "binky fairy" and help soothe her back to sleep. It doesn't happen every night-- probably every other night or so, and almost every day for naps. I've tried more gentle approaches to sleep training which have helped get us to this point, but after a particularly rough couple days of sleep we are ready to do CIO.

My husband often works nights but has the upcoming week and a half off of work. I am a complete softy and absolutely dreading the thought of DD crying. On the other hand, crying doesn't bother my husband at all. I know he will be a great support to me and very consistent. My question is regarding the timing of sleep training. Would you....

(a) Sleep train now when my husband is home. However, we are going out of town in one week to my IL's for a couple days and sharing a room with DD. I know that vacations can affect sleep, so not sure if it is worth it to try now and hope she doesn't regress over vacation. Would she be sleep trained by one week from now?

(b) Wait to sleep train until our trip is over. My husband will be back working nights so I'll be doing the bulk of the sleep training (and likely crying right along with her!).

Also, did you do nap training at the same time or wait until night sleep was consistent?

Looking for any advice and encouraging success stories! :)
