Our routine at 5 weeks was something like, nurse for 30 minutes, sleep for 10 minutes, wake up and cry, repeat. From like 7 pm to 1 am every night. At some point LO and I would both put on pajamas. Haha, this was our routine.
Then all of a sudden, he started falling asleep at 7 pm around 2 months. For us, it was obvious when he needed a bedtime routine and it wouldn't have made sense to do it before he was ready.

@regberadaisy: as far as swaddling, again I suggest Happiest Baby on the Block. Babies don't like swaddling alone but it does ultimately help. I highly recommend happiest baby on the block for colic/fussy/high needs infants.

@regberadaisy: MSPI is Milk and Soy Protein Intolerance. My son can't digest any dairy or soy. About 20% of infants have a Milk Protein Intolerance and of those 70% have a Soy Protein Intolerance. My son came out and screamed from whenever he woke up (between 1 and 3 pm) until 3 am in the morning no matter if he held him, nursed him, or left him. We thought it was acid reflux but he didn't respond to the medications. I believe the medication ultimately hurt him in the end.

Protein Intolerance is when the infant doesn't make the enzyme to break down the protein. So the protein goes through their system at full size. This ultimately will rip up the intestines (because they expect smaller sized items). This is when most parents find blood in the stool. We never saw blood, but my child NEVER had mustard breastfed poop. It was green, very loose and mucousy. If it wasn't that, it was constipated. It ultimately led to him not digesting any food and not gaining weight appropriately (some of that is from the reflux meds too I personally believe). When the intestines get all ripped up, it creates a histamine response which can lead to a life long allergy to foods. This is where the reflux comes from (your acid pumps are histamine pumps).

Nutragemin and Eleocare are typically predigested formulas. They break down the milk and soy proteins smaller. We ended up on Neocate which is amino acid based.

@brownie: what is MSPI?
Minus the one night when we had homemade pizza I have had any dairy in my diet. I had read that some breasted babies have a dairy intolerance. My husband is lactose intolerant so I was extra careful about not taking in dairy or lactose after delivery.
What is the deal with soy? I did notice the one night when my mom made a tofu dish she seemed extra fussy that night. But could have been a coincidence because we switched her to Soy Isomil over a week ago. And last 2 days -knock on wood- she has been less fussy.

And oh she does not like to be swaddled.

@brownie: You've convinced me that I have to finish my blog post on this. I have a huge resource post over at WB that I'm going to have to dig up and compile into something meaningful!

It's a hard road... and having to think about every single bite you put in your mouth absolutely takes it's toll. All I wanted was to eat out without having to get something special or compromise on what I wanted!

@Mrs. Jacks: I didn't know your LO had MSPI. It's been a struggle for us. One that I often feel alone in.

I love sleeping with my little one most of the time.

Have you read happiest baby on the block? It worked wonders for our MSPI baby. We would swaddle him and then put him in the swing (buckled up). We tried sleep training but it doesn't work if your baby has a need and pain is a need.

We worked more on his food and pain issues. He doesn't sleep now but everything else is all better. He eats great, he has a great personality he just doesn't sleep well.

At this point, he sleeps with us at night so that I can get most of a nights sleep since I work. He would be sleep trainable at this point. But I am kinda over sleep training because once we get something in place, something else happens. He is teething, or in a wonder week, or we are on vacation.

Have you dropped dairy and soy from your diets? It was what turned the corner for us.

@skibobrown: @Sammyfab: Oh no I'm not planning on sleep training now.
I did get Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Baby. It's informative for sure but not quite what I was looking for.

We finally put together her swing the other day and it worked for 15mins :) been trying it daily and yesterday it did not work to calm her down. Today she sat in it for a bit when she was already calm.

I really really do not want to use a pacifier unless we absolutely have to. Thus far we tried it once out of desperation 2 weeks ago and she spit it back out. I'm not looking to try again unless she has crazy long crying spree.

We coslept with our high needs colicky baby. Between milk protein intolerance and reflux as well as her strong personality that told us, "I need to sleep with my parents" we just could not justify making her try to go it alone at night. Yeah, she's in my bed this very moment and it's completely blissful.

Most books don't recommend STing for colicky babies until a couple of months later than a non-colicky baby. That doesn't mean you can't start instilling healthy sleep habits now. Have you read Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child? I highly recommend it even though it can be a little boring and science-y.

At your LO's age I wouldn't hesitate to use things like the swing, carseat or paci to help her to sleep.

Real sleep training isn't meant for babies that young. But our bedtime routine looks something like this:
- Diaper change and put on PJs (i.e. a white onesie)
- Feed
- Swaddle
- Turn on the sleep sheep (white noise) and start doing the 5 S's from the Happiest Baby on the Block DVD
- Once she's asleep or mostly asleep we put her in her Pack N Play bassinet and turn on the vibrating mode. We leave the sleep sheep on too.

LO was colicky and it wasn't until she was about 2.5-3 months old that we had a rigid bedtime routine.

But before we sleep trained, our evenings basically looked like this:
- rock and shush until baby fell asleep
- repeat

OR

-nurse until baby fell asleep
- rock and shush and place in bed (baby screaming commence)
- repeat

Ultimately, we drove her around in the car until she slept, then carried her still strapped in her car seat. This went on until we actually sleep-trained.

LO cried more hours in the day than not.

My LO had reflux so she also cried a lot. We didn't sleep train though. Neither DH or I were comfortable with it. When we were dealing with her reflux we would just stick her in the car or stroller and she'd end up CIO anyway just because we couldn't find a way to soothe her, and eventually she fell asleep.

I know @Rubies had a colicky baby and sleep trained, and she just wrote a post about sleep training on the blog.

So all the sleep training threads have me scared shitless.

LO will be 5 weeks old on Saturday and I feel like I should start some kind of routine? But she cries.....a lot.

Those with colicky babies how did thy affect your sleep training?
Did you? Which method did you use?
