@SLR: Both really, but mainly to go down. Once she figured out how to go down by herself, her naps got quite a bit longer.

@SLR: http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/no-cry-sleep-solution-wahoo this is what we did for night sleep & it has been great! no tears, he puts himself to sleep, and shh-ing/patting works for night wakings that occur outside of his one time feeding

We were having 20-30 minute naps and these folks helped me think it through http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/help-me-think-through-nap-training-please he's now putting himself to sleep for naps with a longer awake time and sleeping 45-60 minutes

Sleep is so stressful, I hope some of that helps!

@Weagle: Was your nap training to get her to go down for naps, or take longer/better naps? I can get her down for naps fairly easily, she just doesn't stay asleep for long. I think we need to work on that too! She napped for only 50 minutes total at daycare today.

@hilsy85: She definitely had a brief window a month or so back that I assumed was the dreaded 4m regression, but maybe it was just a precursor. :) When she wakes up, it’s more of a fussing to start – but rather than fussing for a bit and falling back to sleep, it escalates into crying. I do know that I’m guilty of going in there too soon, just because it’s quicker for me.

She’s in daycare so she takes a bottle during the day. Until recently, she would nurse at 6:15 am, take three 5oz bottle at daycare, nurse again around 5:30pm and 7pm, and then once in the middle of the night. She did have a cold a week or two ago and wasn’t eating much at daycare, so perhaps it is still catching up from this. Hope that’s the case!

I guess it is good timing because her 5m appointment is on Saturday. By that point, it will have been two full weeks so I can chat with the doc about their suggestions then.

We nap trained after 7 months. LO go to a point where I "knew" she could go to sleep herself, and by the second nap she had pretty much figured it out. We worked on nighttime at 9.5-10 months. For night wakings (she has always gone down initially very easily), first DH would go in with her. This way, she was comforted, but she also knew she wasn't going to be nursed. If that didn't work, we would let her fuss for 10 minutes before going in. Checking every few minutes only made her mad, 10 was the sweet spot. Usually, she went to sleep in minute 9 :). It took only a couple of nights for her to figure it out. Again, we didn't do this until we knew she was ready. I don't know how we knew... It was an instinct thing.

When she wakes up, is she fussing or crying? Have you tried letting her fuss for a bit before going in? Also, 4-5 months is when there's a major sleep regression/growth spurt--so she might be nursing less effectively during the day due to distractions, and need to make up the extra calories at night.

Around 5 months, we were in a very similar situation--we swaddle weaned, and LO was waking up multiple times a night, and refusing to take his paci to go back to sleep. For us, I definitely think it was a combo of being distracted while nursing during the day (so needing to eat more at night) and not knowing how to put himself to sleep from being awake. I tried two nights of Ferber style CIO but couldn't do it past that (it turned out he had a cold at the same time and was teething!). So we kind of just waited it out. At 6 months, things are definitely better--wakings are down to 1-2 a night, which I can handle.

Anyway, that probably wasn't very helpful, and I"m interested to hear what others have to say :) I have heard that Ferber's book (Solve your Child's Sleep Problems) is really helpful and is not really harsh at all...I keep meaning to pick up a copy!

I want to educate myself a bit more on sleep training and would love to hear about how (what method) you went about it, when (at what age), and why you did?

My 5 month old only fully STTN once or twice – and that’s okay with me. I have no problem with waking for a middle of the night feeding if she needs it. Up until just recently, she slept swaddled with one arm out and was pretty good about putting herself asleep when I put her down at night drowsy but awake. She hasn’t ever been great at doing so for middle of the night wakenings though. I almost always nurse her and then she goes back to sleep right away. But again, she always seemed hungry and with just one wakening I never minded this one bit.

A week and a half ago, we stopped swaddling the other arm and moved to wrapping the belly only because she had been rolling back to belly more frequently (although she had never done this while swaddled in her crib). Ever since, she needs to be put down very drowsy (practically asleep), is constantly stirring, and has been waking every 1-3 hours.

She’s had no interest in the pacifier to help her back to sleep at night, so I’ve ended up feeding her nearly every time. She does eat, but I can’t imagine that she really “needs” to so frequently. I initially thought that it would just take a few days to get used to having both arms free, but it does not seem to be getting better.

Because we’ve already started the swaddle weaning, I don’t think we should go back. So...I’m at the point now that I *might* want to explore sleep training although I don’t think I could ever do a full-blown CIO.

I’d love to hear about you’re your sleep training experience; any advice and words of wisdom is appreciated. I’m getting to be one tired mama!
