My son has always been a good night sleeper but not good at falling asleep on his own, so we did both night and nap training. Personally, I think nap training is harder. I believe Mrs. Bee wrote a post on nap training for Olive because they did night sleep and nap training at different times, but I'm not sure if I'm remembering that right.

My son gets a bottle before his naps. Not ideal, but his night sleep is fine and he CAN fall asleep on his own. If it's nap time and he doesn't want his bottle, he goes in his crib and fusses for a bit but always falls asleep. If he wakes up before an hour or wakes up unhappy, he stays in his crib and normally falls back asleep for another 30-60mins.

@Running Elley: It took about 3 days before I felt like things were clicking. Not perfect, but great progress. She has always been a 3-day baby when it comes to a new routine or skill.

Thank you so much everyone! We're definitely going to give it a shot. I was planning on starting tomorrow since I'll be able to commit to being home during naptimes during the week but LO came down with a cold so I may wait until the little guy gets better :(

@Weagle: Thank you for sharing your nap routine...I was wondering about it too :) I think we'll do diaper change, swaddle (until we swaddle wean...which will probably be soon anyway), song and kisses and then down in his crib. How many days of the routine did it take approximately before your LO got it?

@MerryC: This is VERY encouraging! Thank you so much! I can imagine that with twins routines like that make all the difference in how smoothly day to day life goes :)

we did! my kids weren't the greatest night sleepers, but i wasn't willing to cio at night. during the day, one would cry while i was trying to get the other to sleep anywayy, so i figured by nap training at least the crying would become productive and then hopefully more or less eliminated.

i did it between 5.5-6 months and it was successful. i started instituting a nap routine - clean diaper and bottle in the living room (so i could keep an eye on the other baby), then go up to the nursery and turn on white noise, read a book, rock and sing 3 rounds of their sleep lullaby. i also used a lovey in each of their cribs so they had something to snuggle. i did checks at 3, 5, 7, 10, 12, 15 and they never cried more than 15 straight. for checks i picked them up but just held them and sang 3 round of lullaby and back in crib. as they got better, i could just pat them in the crib and sing. it really only took one bad day and after that i only had to check once or twice.

they go down pretty easily now. the big thing for me is that while they usually still get mostly asleep in my arms, they get there faster, and they don't freak out when i put the in the crib. they can just roll over and snuggle their lovey. they've also started napping longer, and dd is down to one wakeup or sttn from 2-4 wakeups. i will add that they do seem attached to the routine, so it's harder for dh to put them down now since he doesn't sing ;)

in short, i'm glad we did it. it's made our life better, and while they protested, i don't think they ever truly felt neglected.

We did both at once but you can do one at a time; in fact many "sleep specialists" recommend only doing one at a time (either night or nap) in order to not overwhelm the baby!
I am assuming people usually do night time sleep first, then move on to naps, but Elliot sounds like he really doesn't need any night training. If he DF at 10-11 and wakes at 5am, that is 6-7 hours which technically is STTN, already;)

@London Mama: Sure! Our routine now is diaper change, turn on white noise, lights off, close the door, and a song or two while I hold her. Then she goes in the crib.* But it took a while to get there. She pretty much screamed herself to sleep for every nap for about 3 days. But consistency is key. Now she lays her head down as soon as I close the door. She's often asleep before I make it to the second verse, but if not, she will play for 10ish minutes before going to sleep.

None of this worked for us until 6.5-7 months. I tried several times, but I think (at least for my LO) self soothing was a developmental milestone that she didn't reach until then. She just really needed help. Also, regular checks don't work for us. 20 minutes is our magic number. If she's still fussing then, she is overtired really needs help in the form of cuddles. Most of the time she's out within 5 minutes with no cries.

*I have been putting her in the sleep sack this week because she has learned how to pull up and cruise around. I'm not sure if this is a permanent addition to the routine... I hope not.

Following to see how this works out for you. DD still gets rocked down for all of her naps at almost 10 months, which is getting pretty ridiculous. She can put herself down at night, but has no interest in napping during the day without a lot of "help".

It's possible, because we did it! LO has always been a great sleeper at night, but such a bad mapper that some days she wouldn't sleep at all. We just set a routine for naps that's really simple and easy to replicate outside of our house. It's not a mini version of our nighttime routine. It took a while for her to get the hang of it, but naps are great now.

They sleep train and nap train simutaniously. It's really keeping a routine with your baby and watching for tired ques and answering them right away. They suggest doing a modified CIO but we're not going that route.

@bunnylove08: Thanks! Do you think it would be as effective if we don't sleep train at night?

It looks like I'll have to commit to working on it for a few days next week!

I'm reading the sleep easy solution and they have tips on naps. They say naps are a little harder to train for. Pretty much the suggestion is to do a mini routine with Lo like if at night you feed and read a bedtime story and give a bath you would do one or two of those things with Lo every time and try to be consistent with the routine and make a nap schedule

I am in need of some advice regarding nap sleep training. First of all, we have been considering sleep training Elliot. He is almost 16 weeks old and we have a set bedtime (7pm) and a set bedtime routine (bath, swaddle, lullaby, bottle and rocking) that he responds really well to. He usually goes right down, I dream feed him a few ounces between 10 and 11pm. Then he'll wake up around 2am just for his pacifier, at around 5 to eat and then goes back to sleep until between 7:30 and 9am.

When I really think about it I'm okay with his nighttime sleep the way that it is. Our main problem is his daytime naps. He gets tired/ready for a nap between 1.5 and 2 hours after he wakes up and he takes 3 naps a day. However, to go down for these naps he needs motion of some kind. Usually I have to bounce him to sleep on an exercise ball and he needs to be held. If he's swaddled and we put him down in his crib while he's solid asleep he'll sleep for about half an hour in his crib during naptime.

Has anyone sleep trained JUST for daytime sleep/naps? Or if we sleep train him for the day does it only make sense to sleep train for both naps and night sleep? How should we go about this?
