First time, I sleep trained it worked like a charm at 6 mos. It took 3 days and he was great. A month later, we went on vaca and he relapsed. I advise no vacations until sleep training is firmly in place like more than a month.

Second time, we tried to sleep train immediate after we got back from vaca but. CIO did not work, it actually backfired on us as he started having enormous anxiety even going near the crib. We took like 4 month break from sleep training then started back up but very very gradually at 14 mos and it worked for us.

similar to others, once they were trained, retraining never took more than a night or two. And it was always some circumstance like travel or teething or illness, so we were kind of already working with them to work through it (horrible naps, etc).

I also agree that she is learning a new skill (just like learning how to sit up, walk, etc) so even though she may regress, she's not going to regress completely and you'll have to start all over again...!! Once she learns how to fall asleep and stay asleep, she might have blips, but I doubt she'll totally lose the skill and go back to square one. And a blip is so much easier than being at square one every day!!

No matter HOW much crying there is or isn't, it's the toughest thing ever :( but once you're past it it's the BEST thing ever!!!! Every moment of torture is worth it in the end, trust me (and everyone else!).

Good luck!!!

My experience has been that we've had to re train at times, especially after sickness and vacation, but I don't like to call it re training, because it sounds negative. Instead I just look at it as helping LO to remember his soothing and falling asleep skills. Plus, my son is 2.5, we've had a rough time of sleep. He's not textbook in any sense of the word.

@Mrs. Bee: 1 night to retrain isn't bad at all! i could def handle that!

@Running Elley: that's awesome!!! I hope my LO does as well as yours did! I am SO nervous though. that's great that he just goes back to better sleep after just a few nights and you don't have to really do anything, I am hoping this is what happens to us too

@MerryC: that's a really good way of looking at it- a new skill that they have to learn, just like everything else. that is AWESOME progress, i really hope my LO takes to it like that. I just need to remind myself it will be a few rough nights at first, but hopefully she will be doing good after a few days. I still plan on keeping 1 night feed, and I would be ecstatic with just 1. so glad it is working so well for you guys!!!

I did Sleep sense stay in the room, to get my LO to sleep without her Paci and it worked great. She slept without her paci and minimal crying from the 2nd night on. Send me a message on my wall for more details. We are still waiting on her to drop one night feeding though.

As I wrote in your other thread, we're still in the process of this same method ourselves, but I have a few thoughts for you.

1. I was really worried about the retraining thing too, but after seeing how well they have really learned this sleep this as a new SKILL, I'm much less worried about it. And because we'll just plan to do a shorter version of the stay in the room method if they need some retraining/reminders, it's not as daunting to me as having to CIO every time. That said, my kids are 3.5 months older, so there is more developmental stages that they have already passed through, so we have fewer WWs left, etc. As far as listening to them cry, it's still not easy, but for me it was easier to be there with them crying than listen to them cry from another part of the house.

2. I really and truly thought that sleep training, even the sleep sense type might not work for my son. He is a very sensitive kid and has always wanted lots of snuggles, and we had coslept at least part of the night more often than not. He had 2 rough nights where he would fall asleep for a few minutes then wake up again right away, so we'd essentially be in there on and off for a 1.5-2 hours, and a few other times, but he did longer stretches of sleep mixed in with that, so it wasn't too bad. By night 3, he only needed me for 2 quick wakeups (5 min each), and nights 4 and 5, he has STTN! Even using the program, I figured he'd still have a couple of night wakeups just because of his personality, but he has proved me wrong!

And even in less than a week's time, both kids already seem happier, and so are DH and I. I wasn't sure how it was all going to play out, but we decided to give it an honest try, and my biggest emotion through all of this? Immense pride in my kids at how quickly and fantastically they have made this transition and bettered our family life for it.

My LO is a very stubborn, determined baby who does not give up easily and sleep training still worked wonders for us. I was convinced that it wouldn't work because he never gives up when he wants something but it did! We sleep trained using extinction CIO at 5.5 months. He's almost 8 months now and has had some off nights due to 6 month shots and (more recently) teething. Luckily so far we haven't had to retrain. He'll have a rough night or 2 and then just slip back into better sleep.

Honestly, sleep training changed our lives. LO is much happier and well rested and so are we! Good luck!

we had to retrain charlie twice after we first did at 4.5 months, but both times it only took one night. i think once was at 13 months and another around 16 months. the first time was due to milestones/travel/sickness all combined.

we sleep trained olive at 13 months then she was sick for 14-15 and had to retrain at 16 months. but she was relatively easy to train -- even easier than charlie, and i think he was pretty easy. she is 19 months now and so far so good!

LO is almost 6.5 months and we will be starting sleep training tonight. We plan on doing the In Room Method outlined in the Sleep Sense Program. I am a huge baby when it comes to hearing LO cry, and my DH is an even bigger baby, so I am very, very nervous for this. I know she needs it though and I know it will be best for her. We used to be able to put her down awake, and now she acts like the crib is her arch nemesis.

My questions for those who have sleep trained are...

1. Did you have to re-train at any point due to teething, learning new milestones, vacations, wonder weeks, illness? I wouldn't mind going through a few rough nights of crying while training if it sticks, but if you have to re-train for every little sleep disturbance, I guess it doesn't seem worth it to me? My LO's sleep is very affected by learning new things and WW's, and I am wondering if we will just need to do this every time she regresses.

2. Did sleep training and/or CIO NOT work for anyone? I keep reading that most of the time, sleep improves greatly within 3 days, but I am wondering if there is anyone whose baby it did not work on.
