I think if your son is strong enough to roll into his belly, he will have strong enough neck muscles to move his head if he cannot breathe.

I was just forced to sleep train my 6.5 month old son at the beginning at the beginning of this week. Rocking him was not working anymore since it just seemed to stimulate him more and when he finally fell asleep he would wake up again in 45 minutes.

The first night he cried for 40 minutes, slept for about 15, woke up and cried for 30 minutes and then slept for the rest of the night. I napped trained him the next day and he cried for about 20 minutes for the first nap, and only a few minutes for the next naps. But his naps were really short - only 30 minutes. So I think he was super tired b bedtime. The second night, he cried for about an hour before falling asleep. Then he woke up several times and cried about 30 minutes before falling back asleep. Today he fell asleep within minutes with no crying for both naps and bedtime.

So hang in there! It's really tough for the first couple of days but it gets so much better. Good luck!

@KatieLynn: Speaking of the Angel Care monitor, LO scared the bejeesus out of us when she made it go off last night after moving herself into the corner of the crib!

But as for the training experience, in the beginning it was definitely tough. I'm not anti CIO, but at the same time, I was hoping and praying that we never had to go hardcore like that. For the first couple of weeks when we put LO down she would cry for 5 minutes or so and then settle down (I always told myself I wouldn't let it go past 10 minutes) and fall asleep. Now that we've been doing it for a while, she usually doesn't cry at all. She'll occasionally do some light fussing, but that's about it.

However, here are some things that help us:
1) we had been working on her bed time "routine" of dimming the lights in the apartment, bath, pajamas, and bottle since she was about 6 weeks old, so that was well established by the time of training.
2) she's pretty good about self-soothing. I have mixed emotions about her thumb-sucking (she never took a pacifier, unfortunately), but at the same time it does seem to comfort her fairly quickly.

@c.sassy: good to know that other babies sleep on their tummy.

Well he fell asleep after 50 minutes and we made it. Hopefully it will get easier tomorrow!

@meredithNYC: thanks for understanding! It is rough! And that's a good point...we have the angel care monitor also so hopefully it is safe! How has your sleep training experience been?

@Thehistoryofus: I'm not sure...he has never slept on his tummy but he did end up falling asleep that way so hopefully it was comfy for him.

If he will sleep on his tummy, I say leave him there. My LO started sleeping on her tummy at night around that age.

I've read the No Cry Sleep Solution, but we haven't had to use it so far. However, I do know people that have had much success with it. It's just not a quick solution, so you've got to have some stamina :)

Hmmm... my LO is 5 months old and we have been sleep training for about a month and a half now. She does roll herself from back to tummy, but like your LO, can't roll the other way. To be honest, it doesn't concern me too much but we do have the Angel Care monitor, which gives me a little extra peace of mind, I suppose.

The book I use is "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" and I don't remember any mention of what to do with rolling.

Ugh, I'm so sorry you guys are going through this. It can be really tough, to say the least.

Does he mind sleeping on his belly? I would just let him sleep that way.

Hi all,

I am pretty new here, but I read daily and we are trying sleep training tonight for the first time. It is horrible so far :( and I wanted to ask a question... My son is 4.5 months old and can only roll from his back to his tummy. How do you handle this is he ends up falling asleep on his tummy? Do we need to stop the training for now and start again once he can roll both ways? I don't know if I am going to make it much longer, because he has been wailing for 40 minutes and we are weak over here! We are training out of desperation... he only sleeps 30-45 minutes at a time all night long and has been doing this for about a month.

Also has anyone had success with the No Cry Sleep Solution?
