For us, she ALWAYS cries a little before bed. But, it was a success for us when I could put her down awake and she would go to sleep and stay asleep.

We called it a success when we stopped having to walk around the neighborhood for two hours a night to get her down. She has always cried before sleeping. It used to be in the carrier as we walked and now at 7 months it's during PJ time. I think she just needs to cry. She doesn't mind being put in her crib.

@mrslovejoy: My LO still cries for a few minutes before falling asleep as well. I still think it's a success because it's a short period. He'll also cry sometimes if I'm trying to rock him to sleep, so I think it's just part of his makeup.

@sorrycharlie: Same here, although we're down to one waking during the night...unless he's actively teething, and then it's a whole other ball game. But we only sleep-trained him to transition him from our bed to his own crib in his own room. If a night waking wakes me up, I respond.

That sounds like a success to me! I think some kids jut need to fuss a bit before falling asleep.

This is a mystery to me, cause my LO has always fallen asleep on her own without tears but still wakes several times per night at 1 year!

When do you call sleep training a "success"? Is it when babe falls asleep on own without crying at all?

We trained (Ferber) starting about two weeks ago and LO still cries for a few minutes before falling asleep. We rarely go in for checks anymore though. I blame the pacifier for the prolonged difficulty with falling asleep on her own ;-)
