Update!!! Day 13 of ST. Put my LO down and not a peep! He went RIGHT to sleep. I’m hoping he keeps this up!!! I couldn’t believe it! And for the last two days one of his naps during the day have been long. Usually he only sleeps for 30min and today he napped for 1h45m!

@SweetiePie: Tonight I laid next to him and very minimally patted him. He fell asleep in 2 minutes. Hopefully I am lucky and soon I will put him down and leave. We won’t be able to move the crib into our room because there isn’t enough room :( I feel kinda bad if we’re gonna have to go through this all over again once we move him to his crib.

When did you start nap training? I know it’s a lot tougher so I was planning to wait a bit until bedtime is definitely good to go.

@MsBAM: If 6 mins is your burst consider yourself very lucky :silly:
It’s hard to say, could have just been a little more over-tired than usual (I saw you said you’re waiting till you’re sure he’s tired enough, but remember that overtired is not a good thing) , or something else that’s a one off.
Overall it sounds like your LO doesn’t cry much for cio so I would just consider yourself very lucky and continue with what you’re doing and eventually distance myself more and more. Like, I just read that you’re actually doing this in your bed and you’re next to him patting him. It’s good that you’re breaking any feeding/rocking habit but I wouldn’t consider him to be truly sleep trained until you can just put him down awake and walk out without any sleep crutches.
And then you will probably have to do this all again when you move him to a crib/out of your room. If you really want to room share I’d maybe consider at least moving him out of your bed and into a crib in your room. Here are some tips on doing that.

@erinbaderin: @sweetiepie: So night 4 was six minutes of crying... more crying compared to night two and three. Would this be considered a “burst”?

@cake2017: Oh ok! I never did the timed checks (That was my plan originally). I just laid on the bed with him the whole time and patted his back periodically. I wanted him to know I was there for him and I didn’t want to chance him falling off the bed (even though we have pillows around the bed) because he can crawl in circles now. I thought he would lose it if I was there too. He wasn’t happy but he stopped crying after 20mins. I also made sure I put him to bed when I knew he was tired enough in hopes it wouldn’t take as long. Even though it’s worked for me so far my only concern is not knowing if I’ll have to retrain when he transitions to crib.

Also, I originally wanted to nap train first and tried it but quickly realized it’s much more difficult and he cried so much more than the bedtime training. That’s when I decided I would just start with bedtime.

@MsBAM: Baby C is sucking on his hands more and breaks out of swaddle. We bought the zippadee zip but it doesn’t work for us. He doesn’t have much of the moro reflex. I was going to tackle the naps first and get i’m to go down drowsy. He cried etc but the nights are awful. Sleep in the rocking chair with him nursing all night :/... thank you for!

@cake2017: I started sleep training bc I thought he was showing signs of being ready and I was afraid that the longer we waited the harder it would be (when he starts to sit up, etc). If you’re up every hour, I would give it a shot. My LO has cat naps too (30mins) but I’m not tackling nap training yet.

I am in a similar boat. Baby is 4.5months and wants to be held and nursed to sleep. He sleeps for 30mins (naps) and is now waking up every hour at night. All changed when we had to change his feedings to 2.5hrs cause of reflux. Should I sleep train now?

@MsBAM: great! Yes as @erinbaderin: said be prepared for the burst or also for regressions. Just be consistent and don’t backpeddle.

As for nght wakings, they may drop on their own or you may have to make an effort to night wean. My doc told me at 4mo well visit that he didnt need to eat overnight anymore so I could drop it. I was formula feeding so I just slowly decreased the amount in the bottle and when it was down to like an oz I just let him cio. Same experience as you, by night 3 he was fine and didn’t wake up. He did 7-7pm with no rocking and no night waking.
12 hours by 12 weeks is a good book to explain how to give them as much milk as they can during the daytime 12 hours so that the night time 12 hours they just sleep. It’s a very short book, I read it in one evening. And don’t let the fact that you’re past 12 weeks deter you. It’s stilp useful. I didn’t start reading it till he was about 4 months.
Good luck!

@erinbaderin: Thanks, good to know! I hope it doesn’t happen but I’ll work through it if it does. Night one was really hard but the results day 2 and 3 were amazing after just one night of crying. I was shocked how fast it worked! I thought it was going to be a lot worse and that’s why I kept delaying it.

Will he eventually drop the MONF on his own since he’ll be night time trained? I hope he doesn’t need retraining once we move him to the crib.

This is great news! Just be aware that they often have what sleep doulas call a “burst” some time between days 5 and 10 where they will cry more and you’ll think “oh no it didn’t work!” but just tough it out, he’ll get back there. Hooray!

Hi everyone!

Well, I was so nervous to start sleeping training my 5mo and I finally worked up the guts to do it! I decided to go ahead with it when one night we discovered he can put himself to sleep. He fell asleep on his own crying (for 5-10min) one evening in the living room when I was showering and DH was doing laundry. He would always fall asleep nursing.

I started sleep training three nights ago. The first night I stayed with him and patted his back once in a while. He cried for 20mins then fell asleep. The second night he cried for not even thirty seconds and tonight he went down with a simple fuss for a few seconds and fell asleep!!! I feed him before he sleeps but he does go down awake bc I wake him up after he eats and he always wakes up when I put him down too. I might try feeding him a bit earlier to see if things still go well.

We are still cosleeping but I plan to gradually move him to his crib. I’m just happy he seems to be learning this so quickly! He’s still getting up twice a night to eat so I still nurse him at night.

Is there anything I should be doing differently aside from putting him in his crib? Or does this sound like progress re: sleep training him?
