@Rubies: Yes a HUGE difference! I'm thinking once the new year starts I may try nap training.

Now if I could just get him to eat solids... LOL!

We worked on sleep training with our LO this past week because his sleep had just gotten WAY too out of hand. I must say, I'm really happy with how things turned out! The first night was extremely hard, the second night still a bit hard, by the third night he really got it, and now just a couple of days later and it's such an amazing change!

Now for naps, that's still a tricky one because I don't want to be a prisoner to his nap schedule. He's been okay with falling asleep in a stroller and such when we are out, so I'm okay with how that's been going so far. If it gets out of hand like the night had, I will probably nap train, too.

My LO is just over 4 months and we decided not to sleep train. She is not a good sleeper at night but our lives are too hectic to have her conform to a schedule. We spend nights at both our parents houses, go on vacation and stay in hotels so it would just be wasted effort right now for us to night train. I think I will wait till she is starting solids to see if she will improve on her own, and if not I'll try to night-train her. I just don't have the heart to hear her cry

@momentspassslow: We started sleep-training LO Friday night and her natural bedtime is 6:30pm (bed routine begins at 6pm)...When we noticed this pattern, we realized that the hubs would NEVER see LO as she wakes up after hubs leave for work and hubs gets home from work between 6:30-7pm. We decided that for now, her sleep is too important and that within time and getting used to this new sleep thing, we will be able to move her bedtime a little bit later.

@momentspassslow: I totally understand he wants to see his baby! in terms of him waking up earlier... I think he would actually wake up later... There was a period of time.. for a week or so.. we kept Eli up longer at night because I didn't think he needed to sleep so early.. so he ended up going to bed at 8pm.. o boy was he grumpy... and on top of that.. he would get up really early too! so if you want to give it a try.. chance are.. he won't wake up too early :)

@reggie: Thanks for your response! I have been thinking of moving it a bit earlier. The two reasons we haven't are (1) I'm afraid he will then wake up earlier and (2) my husband doesn't get home from work until at least 6 and he wants to spend some time with him - I know it's probably not a good reason but he wants to see his son, so it's hard!

@HeatherlovesKenny: I read that book and I tried implementing those techniques... We didn't sleep train Eli using CIO (yet)... we do sometimes let him cry a bit to see if he would settle himself... I think it's really important to establish healthy sleep habits from the beginning... we started a nap and bed time routine since he was 5 weeks old (he is 13 weeks now).. and whenever possible, I would put him down drowsy but awake so he learns to fall asleep on his own. it's been working for us so far... he is not perfect but for the most part he sleeps well at night (11 hrs on avg w/o feeding) and goes down for most of his naps easy (sometimes has difficulty going down for his last nap of the day)... but he definitely does not have a set schedule for naps... i hope he will develop that himself eventually... he usually has one long nap a day... most of the time it's in the morning... sometimes early afternoon.. the rest of his naps are 30 - 40 min long.

@momentspassslow: Eli just turned 13 weeks and he sleeps from 6 pm - 5 30am usually... there was this one time he woke up at 4 30 (my in law didn't swaddle him tight enough so he got out of it) and even after we fed him he still didn't want to go back! Since by then he already had 10 hours of sleep.. I didn't let him cry because i know he will cry for a whole hour... it really depends on if you think he has had enough of night time sleep... like the other night he woke up at 2am and didn't want to go back, we just let him cry. took about 20 minutes or so..

also, I think you can try moving his bedtime earlier... most babies his age can sleep earlier and wake up later now

My Lyle is 12 weeks old right now and as of now he is going to sleep with no problems at 8/830pm and sleeping until 4/430am - which is great (!!) - but he thinks 4/430 is time to party! Can I allow him to CIO at that point of the morning/his sleep cycle? or since it has been so long does he need a feeding? I think he still needs the feeding, which is fine, just wondering! thoughts?

@Andrea: thanks! yeah i think for now we are only going to stick with our night training... he's been a wonderful baby in terms of night time sleep anyway... as of naps, we do have a nap routine... but my MIL prefers soothing him till he is REALLY sleepy and then putting him down.. whereas I sometimes just put him in his crib before he even gets sleepy... and half of the time he is able to fall asleep on his own. I guess my MIL just wants to play it safe and doesn't want him to shed any tears!

@reggie: My daughter's naps seem to have no effect on her night time sleep which is also another reason why I did not nap train. Her naps are quite variable, though. She'll have phases where she naps great and other times when it is a struggle. The change of child care provider is a good consideration. I also did not nap train because my LO went to day care at 6 months and I thought it would be pointless to nap train since they wouldn't be able to do anything if she needed to be retrained down the line. So you're right, your MIL will have to be 100% on board with nap training, too!

So in short, I think your LO can probably distinguish between day and night so you may not need to worry about bad habits transferring.

@Andrea: I'm curious as to how your LO sleeps during the night compare to her naps? We are struggling as to if we should sleep train him at night and/or naps... sleeping training for nighttime is so much easier.. whereas during the day, I worry that when I go back to work and my MIL takes over, she will ruin all that progress.. so I am reluctant to nap train b/c I don't want him to waste his tears! But I also worry if he is not nap trained, would he bring those bad habits to nightime?

@Maysprout: I'm no expert and really have no idea what I'm talking about but I wouldn't worry too much. I say this only because my good friend has a "good" baby - very easy going and a happy camper with no fixed schedule. And all is good. My LO is exceptionally (like, seriously abnormally) fussy and I had to do something to control her fussy behaviour. I do think that my LO could benefit from a strict schedule, which is why I'm choosing to train her.

My LO is not quite 6 months but haven't done any sleep training yet. She's slept 6-7 hour stretches ever since she was a couple weeks. Once in awhile she'll wake up more and night but I figure that since it's out of the norm there's a reason for it. She's a pretty happy camper during the day and takes fairly scheduled naps but we don't have any sort of timer and don't sweat if she misses one or she goes down earlier or later. After reading this thread I'm worried that our lax ways are going to come back to bite us since sometimes she nurses to sleep, sometimes she doesn't or we just got lucky with a flexible baby.

@heatherloveskenny - i tried to avoid cio and tried the no cry sleep solution, but it did not work for us. i turned to cio as a last resort when i was utterly exhausted (and so was charlie!).

for awhile charlie was waking up every hour and needed to be rocked for 30 minutes back to sleep only to start the cycle again in 30 minutes. that was bad enough but at least i was getting 30 min of sleep at a time. then he started being wide awake for hours in the middle of the night.

i tried the no cry sleep solution for 2 weeks, and maybe i should have stuck it out longer. but i didn't see any results, and i was too exhausted to go on. that's when we had no choice but to sleep train.

The cry it out method but it was the only thing that worked for us.
We actually waited until LO was 9 months old which might have been late but he really needed the rest. He was so tired all the time from always being awake at night. Like pp's I made the mistake of nursing him to sleep, rocking, laying my hand on his chest to make him comfortable to sleep, but he would always wake up after an hour, sometimes every hour.

Did anyone try no-tear sleep methods? Dr. Sears book, the No-cry Sleep Solution is on my must-read list during this pregnancy.

It seems like there are many more posters here on Hellobee who are for sleep training than on the Weddingbee, it's really interesting to me.

you can definitely choose not to nap train, or postpone nap training because babies can separate day and night sleep.

i decided to nap train because i just couldn't bear to see charlie so exhausted during the day. he wasn't happy and wasn't into playing. he was sooo much happier when he was better rested. nap training was so hard for me, i almost quit every day! but so many parents told me that i was doing it for him, and not to him. i was giving him the gift of sleep. and sleep is so important at this age. a lot (most?) behavioral problems can actually be attributed to sleep deprivation in young children.

so while we were prisoners to his nap schedule for a couple of months, it was worth it for us. charlie eventually took naps in his stroller, and it didn't affect his nap/night training. he naps in his stroller all the time now on the weekends when we're out and about.

i've even heard that some moms stroller nap train! they create a stroller nap routine and move their stroller around the 45 minute mark (one sleep cycle) so their lo sleeps more than 45 minutes. i never tried it (charlie easily sleeps over 2 hours in his stroller), but i think it could definitely work!

@Rubies: Yeah, I think it depends on your family's lifestyle on whether to do nap training or not. But I don't think you have to decide for the naps yet since she is still young. It is probably less confusing to be doing both at the same time but I think it is do-able to do naps later.

Definitely all pro sleep training at night but we did not do nap training. I waver about whether it was the right decision since my LO is not a great napper and maybe she would be if we chose to nap train? But we like to go out a lot and didn't want to be held prisoner in the house or worry too much about missing naps so we opted for the flexibility of not having such a set schedule. I feel like this worked for us and my friends who nap trained never seemed to take their kids very far from home since they always had to rush back for nap time and it seemed so stressful. They spend so much time continually talking and worrying about naps that it seemed like nap training didn't alleviate very much pain! It just became this constant worry of what would happen if their kids missed a nap. I always figured my LO would nap at some point and if she didn't then I would put her to bed a little earlier that night.

I think the mistake I made was not starting as I meant to go on, which made sleep training a requirement. We did lots of things to help our LO sleep in the early weeks, like bouncing, rocking, feeding and putting him into his crib deeply asleep. It basically meant that he relied on us to intervene in order for him to get to sleep. So, when he got too big to do all of that comfortably, we had no choice but to train him. The older they are the longer the process as you've got to break those bad habits that are ingrained in them. It took us over 2 weeks to get our son to bed at night with no crying. Naps are a different story.

I'm all for sleep training. It's 2-4 stressful nights but afterwards, baby is happier because he/she sleeps better, which means mom and dad are happier because they are better rested, and when mom and dad are better rested, baby gets more quality time. Goodness all around :)

LO is 3.5 months old and I'm currently sleep-training (tonight is night #3). I chose to sleep-train for a few reasons:
1) LO would sleep 3-4 hours and then after her first night feed, continue to wake every 1-2 hours all night long.
2) I knew we had developed poor sleeping habits because we would rock her until she fell asleep and then place her in her crib and this often took up to 30 minutes to do. The second we put her down, she would wake up and then we'd have to start all over again.
3) Her fussiness during the day added to my lack of sleep was driving me crazy.

The only con I've experienced thus far is just listening to her cry. But I KNOW she's okay - just frustrated. The pros? Well, the first night was hard as she woke many times throughout the night and couldn't understand why we weren't coming to get her. She slept 7.5 fragmented hours of sleep. But last night was awesome - almost 14 hours of sleep (9-hour stretch, feed, 3.5 hours). The pro is that she's getting sleep.

I feel that LO should be getting good sleep at night and that she needed to learn how to help herself.
