@skadi: what method of sleep training did you use? Was it for going to bed, motn, naps, or all of the above? :)
I plan to ST mine at 13-14weeks and agree it is probably better if the parents are completely ok with it before implementing.

We sleep trained over a period of three days at 11 weeks old. No regrets! I know a family who sleep trains at 7 weeks with all their children, and their kids are all happy and healthy. I honestly think the timing of sleep training has more to do with the comfort level of the parents than the baby.

I think sleep training now might make your trip easier. Not that it will completely fix any sleep problems that arise because of the time difference, but it might help in the way that training for a marathon always helps even if you end up coming in last place.

Do whatever you feel is best!

I rocked/fed my dd to sleep for all naps and bedtime. She was a rock star sleeper, she just couldn't go to sleep on her own. I watched a couple of ISIS sleep training videos and one of them said to not start anything until they were 5.5 months, so I waited until then. We did CIO with ferber checks and it only took 2 nights.

I would wait until you are back home ... Traveling that far with all that time difference will probably do a number on sleep anyway!

@Callalily: thank you so much!!! I'm glad to hear it all worked out okay, save for the zombie first week! Luckily my parents will be falling all over themselves to take care of my son, so hopefully I can catch some zzzs here and there!

We went through a very similar situation in April - travelled from Canada to New Zealand for five weeks when our daughter was 4.5 months old. We were rocking and nursing and swaddling for all sleep too, though she slept really well. Once in NZ, it was so awful, she only sort of adjusted to the time difference in our last week there. I was a complete zombie for the first week! So we waited until we got home to sleep train (cry it out with no checks for both nights and naps) and swaddle wean all at once. I'm so glad we did it, it went very well, but I'm glad we waited until we were home!

@loveisstrange: @scg00387: Thanks ladies. I'm definitely leaning that way. I would hate to have nights and nights of crying only to have to re-do it on our return.
Anyone else?

I agree with @loveisstrange - travel has always suspended any and all rules for our sleep anything. You just have to take it any way you can get it and sort it out when you get home.

Honestly, Id absolutely wait until after your trip. The time difference and jetlag will totally undo any sleep training you've done. :/

We sleep trained at 6 months and we had to retrain 3 months later after an international trip. It was brutal.

So my son is 15 weeks tomorrow. He's been a rockstar sleeper since the early days, but I rock him to sleep for naps (following EASY during the day) and nurse him to sleep at night. I realise the salad days aren't going to last forever, and I think we've seen the beginnings of the 4 month sleep regression the past couple of nights...he's more difficult to put down, waking twice a night instead of once or no times. I can deal with it for now no problem, but I'm sure it'll get worse before it gets better!

My husband and I are committed to sleep training IF its needed - in the past 3 weeks we have mastered drowsy but awake at nighttimes fairly consistently, so maybe he'll learn to self settle, but maybe not.

ANYWAY - my question is two fold. First of all, do you think its too early to cry it out, if this bad sleep continues/is the 4 month sleep regression? Second of all, we're travelling back to Canada at the end of July (he'll be 4.5 months then) for 3 weeks (from Australia - MAJOR time difference). Should I postpone any and all sleep changes like training, moving him out of our room, swaddle weaning, etc. until we get back from Canada? I'm worried to do anything now in case it all turns to shit with jet lag, but the other side of me thinks if we can install good habits now, it might make the travel easier?

Any thoughts? Thanks bees!
