@bhbee: oops, somehow missed these responses. The switch is a dimmer knob. I ended up standing just outside the door and reaching in to turn the light off every time she turned it on. I didn't say anything. It really made her mad, but did work. Two rough nights and now she's back to easy 10 min bedtime and falls asleep on her own without fussing. Still waking up sometimes but I can't let her fuss in the middle of the night much because she shares a room right now.
@DesertDreams88: She goes back and forth. She is usually good by herself but then if she gets sick and gets into the habit of having us there we have to retrain.

Does she fall sleep independently or do you and/or DW stay with her until she falls asleep?
That seemingly was a key factor for us when we had a regression 19m-22m. LO is out of a crib, now, too, so training is def. difficult!

Random thought, is the light a switch? Could you put an outlet cover over it? Like we have some big covers that an adult can open to plug things in ... maybe would work on a switch?

We are just finally getting better on our big bed switch so i feel your pain. Time and a change in routine (holiday travel) seemed to help us so no good advice otherwise.

We are having a bear of a time with O's sleep these days. She was going down easily and sleeping through the night until about 2-3 months ago and now she's waking up 1-3 times, taking 30-90 minutes to go to sleep, skipping naps or only napping in the car, pretty much problems in all areas. I'm about ready to try to officially "train" her at least for night time , but I'm not sure what that looks like when she's in a big girl bed and gets out and turns the light on when she doesn't want to sleep. How do you deal with this? Do I need to get a ladder to pull the bulbs out of her light fixtures?
