@ms.janedoe: i'm sure your library has it! As far as I remember, it's an immediate response. At the very beginning I picked him up the instant he made noise, but eventually found that it worked better to walk out calmly and down to the kitchen - which took approximately 20 seconds. Sometimes he would squawk and then roll on to his tummy and that was it. That's what worked for us at least!

@scg00387: I'm usually a huge book person, but I don't know if I can bring myself to buy yet ANOTHER baby sleep book and read about baby sleep cycles...I just wanna know the good stuff! Is there any waiting when baby starts crying, or is it a pretty immediate response?

@scg00387: Oh hell yeah, that was super helpful to read. I think I'd like to try this before CIO... I know I'll just need to buckle down and do it, and with so many freaking wake ups all night, I know it's gonna succccck. :/. Is it with getting the book or is it just basically PU when they start to cry-cry (not fuss cry), PD when they're calm, working towards them being more awake?

@hilsy85: I have a sleep suit in the way! I just put LO in our bed to see if it helped with the put down (it's a Tempurpedic so a little softer than her bed)... I got her down and have been watching and she totally has these twitchy limb movements that are waking her up, so I'm super hopeful the suit will work!!

@Zbug: I like that idea! We cosleep the second half of the night, so LO is used to sleeping flat, just not flat and alone!! I reeeeally like the three strike idea! Good luck to you too!!

Okay so we decided to start co sleeping instead of doing the crib transition for now (she was waking up too often and frankly I can't be a good mama after nights like that), but I've heard numerous success stories about doing three strikes. Basically, you start the baby off in the crib and wait for three wakeups before moving them to rnp, your bed, whatever. As they get used to the crib, the idea is that it will take longer and longer to reach three strikes. Eventually, and hopefully sooner rather than later, they won't get to three strikes and will sleep in their own bed. My LO is going through a bad sleep patch now, so we actually decided to move her to our bed first to get her used to sleeping on a flat surface instead of the rnp incline. We plan to implement three strikes again once we are ready to try the crib. Good luck!!

Hi again! No real advice, just sympathy. LO has been in her crib for a while so she's ok there, but she is a total swaddle junkie., so I too have been wondering whether it's better to address these issues one at a time, or all at once.

@hilsy85: I've been doing it in a lame attempt to swaddle-wean...sounds like the sleep suit might be a good starting point!

I'll try to get back with doing drowsy but awake in the crib until the sleep suit gets here, maybe worst case she'll get used to being in the crib more!

I could have written this post---we tried the transition/Ferber last weekend with our 5 month old. It was just too much at once, I think. I wouldn't recommend it, I think we're going to slowwwwwly introduce her to the crib while awake then work on night time once she thinks it's a "happy" place. I don't know if this will work or not, but I empathize with you mama! Hope all goes well.

@ms.janedoe: are you doing that because she hates because swaddled or because you're trying to swaddle wean? I second the merlins magic sleep suit if you are trying to swaddle wean, although that won't really help with the initial "put down" shock, it will help her not startle quite as much.

@hilsy85: I have one arm swaddled, but not very tightly, she manages to always pull it free.

My DD sleeps 100x better in her crib in her own room than in any other situation, so I would get LO moved first. Give it a week or so and see if your wake up situation improves. Then I would CIO.

We did a modified CIO to transition him to the crib, and didn't address the night-wake ups at all (I was BFing on demand, and he was still demanding it often then). But after a week or two in the crib he slowly started sleeping in longer stretches on his own. I think he really liked having his own space.

So I would personally work on getting him into the crib first and see if that helps the night wakings at all, and then if I didn't see any improvement at all within a week or two I would start CIO for night-wakings.

@hilsy85: I agree.

Try putting her in the crib for the first stretch of night sleep. Do you have a musical mobile? R stills love hers at 9 months old. We'd play it once and wait there. Then we'd start it again and leave the room. She was able to fall asleep by herself fairly quickly.

LO is 4.5 months now, and will be 6 months the first week of May. We've been struggling with awful night sleep since 3 months (hourly wakeups at night initially, now we'll maybe get one or two 2-3 hour stretches a night if it's a GOOD night). She's taking like, 5 thirty minute naps a day (ugh), and we've been working on "drowsy but awake" for all of them as our pedi said it'd help carry over to her nighttime wakings.

We're going to Florida in a few weeks, but when we get back, I think we're going to be looking at sleep training, I'm thinking Ferber's CIO with checks.

The "issue" is that she's still been in her RnP for the majority of the night, and then usually, in a fit of desperation around 1-2 in the morning, I'll bring her in bed with me. I've tried to do the crib for naps/night sleep, but can't get her to even transfer into it (obviously I've had her asleep already before putting her in it...problem 1 I'm guessing!) without totally startling herself awake.

Should we just do the crib transition at the same time that we start sleep training (have her CIO in her crib from the get-go)? I don't want to totally overwhelm/scar her, but I don't know what else to do!
