We have successfully trained DD twice... both times it took 3 nights. The first time, we planned to drop one of her 2 MOTN wakings, but she dropped both on her own. The second time, we just needed to drop one. I started by making sure DD was getting enough to eat during the day and giving her extra milk at bedtime. We have DH do all the checks - if DD sees me, she will scream for as long as it takes until she gets to eat. We usually give her about 8-10 minutes to figure it out before the first check, then my DH will go in and lay her back down, give her her Wubanub and leave. That usually goes the trick. We are not opposed to letting her whine/cry as long as it's just whining/irritated. Only once has she really cried like she was lonely/hungry/sad... I gave in a fed her then.

We (I) did checks every 5, 7, 10 min at 14 months to re sleep train after sickness. It worked really quickly! I agree with being consistent. That most important!

@birdofafeather: We did go cold turkey after DH would go in., but he did all of the middle of the night stuff while we were sleep training. It was just way easier for LO to figure out that she couldn't nurse. Though, it all depended on her crying. We basically decided pretty early on that we were only going in if she had a "I'm scared and all alone cry." If she had a mad or tired cry, she could figure it out.

Now, 10 months later, LO knows that DH is the soft one and I'm in charge of every random wake-up lest we have a toddler in the bed all night :)

@Weagle: you did the checks for the MOTN wakings? Did you just go cold turkey (after the 2 previous days your DH went in?) I've tried waiting 10-15 minutes but she just keeps ramping up. :( She's never just gone back to sleep, so it will probably take more than 9 minutes. :( But agreed on the consistency. That's why DH and I need a plan of attack!

Disclaimer: My child has always transitioned really well. She catches on to new routines really fast.

We tried to send DH in there for a night or two, just to let her know that she's not alone. It didn't really help, so we let her cry. We knew from previous nap training that we couldn't check on her before 10 minutes, at least, so we set our limit at that. She went to sleep at 9 minutes the first two nights, and we haven't had any real problems since. I think the key was just sticking with a plan. Waffling is confusing, especially at night when no one is totally awake.

Alright, it's time. The background: DD is 12.5 months old and has been putting herself to sleep since 4.5 months. We always have done EASY. We travel a lot so while we don't have an exact routine, she falls asleep relatively the same for me or DH and for my parents. When she was little, she dropped feedings on her own and had long stretches often so I thought we'd get to STTN early. A regression hit around 7.5 months so she went back to 2 MOTN wakings, then back to 1, which was always right in the middle of her sleep cycle. Literally 6-7 hours from bedtime and back to sleep for 5-6 hours!

Now after sickness, teeth and travel, she's back to 2 MOTN wakings that are 4-5 hours apart and definitely habit. DH is on board for sleep training as I currently nurse before she'll fall asleep again! DH went in this morning to comfort her instead of me and she battled for an hour til he gave up, I nursed her for a couple minutes and put her back in her crib awake where she fell back asleep.

So now that you have our background (so long!) I need your help figuring out how to sleep train/night wean her. We've been talking about it for 6 weeks and it's time to get serious. Please help! DH agreed to get a game plan and stick with it until it works.
