I hated being told to sleep when the baby sleeps b/c...I could never do it. I tried, but the intervals were so short in the night when she was a newborn, I would be up quite a bit.

The sleep will hopefully get better in the next couple of weeks! Usually between 8-12 weeks they begin to stretch out their sleep, and hopefully you can catch some more ZZZs too!

I had a hard time taking random naps during the day when M was a newborn. I felt so anxious (when will she need to nurse again? Will she cry forever?) that I had trouble sleeping. We used to go to bed with her at around 8pm or even earlier because that seemed like her longest sleep stretch. I would definitely sleep as late as she would let me in the AM. The newborn stage was SO SO hard for me. Do whatever you can to get through it and get a little sleep. Life with a baby gets immeasurably better as they get a few months older. Good luck!

I tried to because it was the only time I could sleep. It meant a lot of day sleeping for me, too. In those early days, don't beat yourself up for not getting a lot done. Eventually your LO will start to sleep better and you'll hopefully be better rested at night, but if that's not now don't feel bad. Early postpartum is about survival. We had a messy house and not a lot of quality time then, but it eventually got better. He still doesn't STTN at 8 months, but we have longer stretches so I feel much more rested, and he goes to bed by 7:30 so DH and I get time together. You'll make it eventually, but don't feel bad for not being there yet!

@MrsLilybugg: yeah I totally have been getting a sore neck from looking down at her eating. Have you tries nursing laying down? It's a little harder for us to get situated but its a nice break for me from the same position a million hours a day.

@Foodnerd81: nice that you worked in some QT together with your Dh! I miss bedtime snuggle time with my DH :'( since she's up and about and he works, he goes to bed before me. We do get to watch some tv shows before her witching hours though!

@erinpye: thanks... I feel like such a slob when I see its noon and im getting out of bed. But I technically am working a night shift what with the nursing all night!
@Foodnerd81: Yes! That's another thing about not sleeping during the day is that I finally have time to do things around the house, like the dishes or fixing clutter. (light housework- too tired for anything else). Or i scarf down a quick lunch.
@gracecat: I hear that EXACTLY. she is in her PNP seemingly asleep for the night but im too.scared to drift off in case she wakes again. Sigh. And my neck and shoulders ache too! Also from looking down at her as im hunched over BFing on our too-soft stupid couch all day.
Ok... I THINK I get to sleep now.... !

Oh and sometimes I break the rule of going down at night when she does. That's the absolute only time Dh and I have together so sometimes after she goes to sleep we stay up and watch a show and talk. I think that time for our relationship is as important as sleep.

I tried but in the early days my body was so hyped up on adrenaline I would just lie there with my mind racing and then cry with frustration because I couldn't sleep but needed to so so badly. If not this then it was physical discomfort. My neck and back were so messed up from nursing all day and night and looking down at baby that I had such aches and pains that prevented me from falling asleep. I was so so miserable.

C is 3 weeks old. I have a hard time napping when she does during the day. She's usually only good for one long nap a day so its my only chance to get anything done. But she sleeps for some longish stretches at night, so on average, we both go down around ten, wake up and feed for an hour around two or three, both sleep until seven. Sometimes she will sleep another hour or two after that, sometimes not, and if she does sometimes I will sleep too, or I take my shower. I only really sleep during the day if we slept badly the night before but I'm realizing I'm not really getting enough hours overall.

I felt too much "pressure" to always sleep when DD slept, and she woke so often, I got tired of drifting off just as she cried. I just slept whenever I could, which usually involved holding my DD while she slept (not exactly restful). It does get better, and for whatever reason, nighttimes are hardest at the beginning. Hang in there and just sleep whenever you can get it- don't feel guilty if that means you're up all night and sleep until noon.

My LO is 5 weeks tomorrow. Its 2:30 am and i have had one hour of reprieve/"sleep" all night. She's currently on my shoulder after BFing , and i still have my Brest Friend pillow attached. Every time I tell a mom how tired I am, they tell me to "sleep when she sleeps".

Me:
i don't bother going into bed early because Vampire Baby is alert starting at 10 or 11pm. I feed her in hopes of a long stretch of sleep, which usually she FINALLY drifts into at 2 or 3 a.m. Last night after hours of back breaking nursing on demand, she slept from 3am-7am, i changed and fed her, she (and I) went back to sleep until 9 am. She ate again for about an hour. Then Sleep again until noon. i hate getting up so late, but i also get into bed so late. This to me is "sleep when they sleep".
she of course sleeps away most of the day but I don't nap the rest of the day.
moms with infants: do YOU "sleep when they sleep?" what's YOUR sleep schedule like?
