@Mrs. Sunshine: oh! Gotcha! I try to remind myself that it's "progress not perfection". If I can't work out, I at least eat right. Or don't binge on junk....

I've changed the way I work out. Pre-LO, I used to like to work out in the mornings so I'd wake up early to get my workouts in. My 2 year old has always gotten up super early though and I simply can't force myself to wake up even earlier than her. When I feel good, I try to do short workouts in the evening right after she goes to bed. If I'm exhausted, I don't bother. I know I am not in as good shape as I used to be, but that's ok with me (I am also pregnant right now so I am really prioritizing my sleep these days). I am also lucky enough to have a walking commute, so even if I don't work out, I know I will walk 3 miles the next day so I don't feel too guilty.

I definitely go by how I feel. I also changed up my workout times when H was little. I prefer to run in the mornings, but when I wasn't sleeping it was easier for me to go at night when I was more awake.

ETA: I had to adjust my goals. It's taken me a lot longer to get close to my pre-baby self/goals. But it's okay because I race for fun, not to actually compete.

@blackbird: I guess what I'm really trying to find is balance between my personal goals and desires and what I can actually accomplish due to lack of sleep. lol my kids are so worth it but sometimes it feels discouraging!

i just go by how I feel. Some days i am SO TIRED, i just don't have it in me to do a good work out. So i do what I can. But sometimes, even though I'm sleep deprived, once I get going, I feel AWESOME, so i go hard. Intensity is a scale, you know? There are always factors at play.

Also depends why you go to the gym...you're not going to put on a lot of muscle, let's say, while you are running on less than 5 hours of sleep because your body can't repair said muscles overnight like it wants to. So maybe it's not the time to try to get a max deadlift or something.

Do you pare down the intensity of your workouts when you know you'll be sleep deprived indefinitely? How do you find balance between the things you want to do and not pushing yourself too far because you know your sleep recovery isn't where it needs to be?
