Some people say that it matters, but it really doesn't. We used to top Maddox off with 2-4 oz. after nursing at night and it was milk from whenever. I mix my milk together throughout the day so that there's not one "batch" that's fattier than another.

LO should get more efficient soon, but I found during the distracted period (it really only lasted a month) that nursing in the exact same, boring spot every single time helped him keep on.

DD has been very distracted during the day too so we've been doing a bit of reverse cycling.

Like the pp said it really doesn't matter too much when you pump as long as baby is getting the needed 30ish oz a day, BUT milk you produce in the evening is higher in fat content than in the morning do maybe you can nurse & then top off with a bottle?

Wow 7 ounces plus nursing is a lot of milk!

I always pumped more in the mornings. If you can wake up an hour before she does and pump them that would probably work good.

@LouLouBelle: My baby is a super distracted baby so I had to go to only pumping. I pump 5 times a day and this is how much I get in those sessions :
1st session (both sides): 5-8 oz
2nd-4th session (one side each time): 1-3 oz
6th session (both sides): 4-6 oz

The milk from any of those sessions can be mixed together.
Her last bottle of the night is formula if I didn't pump enough

Babies are much more efficient than a pump. Ds gets supplemented with formula at daycare because I can't pump enough but at home on the weekends we EBF and he gets what he needs.

if she is taking a 7 oz bottle a day, it doesn't matter when you pump, you just need to pump that 7 oz at some point (or multiple sessions) throughout the day to keep up your supply!

I say pump when you can. Calories are calories no matter the time of day.

It doesn't matter when you pump. You can pump whenever you can throughout the day to get the 7oz she needs. Obviously, pumping at night (instead of nursing her) will get you a good amount of milk, but if its not the 7oz you need, add in a morning or afternoon pumping session.

Good luck!

I am ebf but LO is a really super distracted almost five month old nurser these days. I think the reason she is waking up at night suddenly is because she is not eaing as much during the day and is therefore hungry! She seems to sleep well if we can get like a 7 oz bottle into her before bed on top of nursing. It is not a milk supply thing, she is gaining like a champ.

My question is...I can't pump 7 oz in one sitting at night! Does it matter when I pump the milk? Ideally should I be pumping the same amount that she takes, at the same time? Or could I pump first thing in the am after her first feed and use that later that night? Or multiple times a day? I just don't want to be giving her that much milk at night and not telling my body to make that much!

Thoughts?
